  • that octaver seems to work reall well, I have realized a lot that is technique though. emphasis of fundamental over harmonics in his marlowe's playing here make the octaver track well despite it being a totally analog octave pedal.

  • Hello, cool video! do you have bossa nova lessons? thanks alot!

  • well that octaver sounds shit... sorry marlowe

  • Hi, what gear do u use? (amplifier, speakers,...) would love to have this question answered. I'm looking for some good speakers to use with my laptop, and some kind of studioPod. what do you recommend me?

  • that sounds way better than a guitar with an octaver. imo a guitar sounds better with a pitch shifter

  • teach me teach me....we like jazz

  • The octaver is one of my staples when I want the crowd to know when its time to FEEL it!

  • god bless u man

  • From Denmark! :D

  • Marlowe, did you getthis bass from musicians friend?..and if you did, do would you recommend buying it over an VM jaguar?

  • @TheSoSGaming Its a friend of mine's bass

  • @MarloweDK

    hmm..kind of a mood killer there,thanks anyways. :D

  • @TheSoSGaming And its a 1969 Fender P bass, Jaguar is more of a jazz bass

  • @MarloweDK Its awesome! :). Your playing and talking is so inspiring!

I've just looked at your video with the MXR envelope filther. Im currently searching the market for envelope filthers and octavers. Do you recommend the MXR envelope filther? - is it your favorite, or is there anything you like more?

When it comes to octavers, I'm currently facing a choice between the MXR octaver and the EBS OctaBass - have you any experiences with the EBS? Which one would you choose?

    Greetings from DK :)

  • I think that may be the sexiest tone i've ever heard come from any bass guitar. ever.

  • THIS BASS IS NICE ... WHERE CAN I GET IT?

  • thanks man ! you are the best music teacher i never seen here

  • Hi Marlowe! Please record some video about slick lick,i love it:)Sometimes in your lessons I had problem with slick lick when I have leardned;)Cheers from sunny Poland now:)

  • pretty cool, kinda got a little "Buzz Lightyear" with it but the pedal sounds cool

  • Does this base has stock pickups?

  • I imagine that pedal would sound great with a active bright sounding bass so as to cut through clearly but still have that nice Octaver sound

  • Fucking awesom!!!!!!!

  • not very groovy, bass player that play bass like guitarist ...

don't forget the roots man !

    not for me.

  • @coucou7863

the bass is a guitar. Play it however you like. Besides, this is just practice.

  • @coucou7863 Watch his over vids Man, not groovy my Ass!

  • @coucou7863

    ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ignorance never stop XD

  • @coucou7863 this guy is most probably 10 times better than 90% of bassists out there, he knows everything and can play heaps of styles. This isnt my favourite vid of his either but he's awesome, watch more stuff before you judge

  • i wish i had a quarter of the equipment you own. how much money did you spend on all your gear?

  • OMG! I love the smoothness of this tone! It's like creamy buttery soft toffee.

  • have an old boss oc2 i love using playing dance type music, palm muting with the octave adds a really nice warm tone..

  • Cool bass. That one is my main

  • holy crap, he talks! lol this is the first vid i've seen where you actually say something. I'm an intermediate bass player and I love watching your vids...very inspirational.

  • i love you, but i hate slick lick. please stop chillin around the slick lick

  • @piratpojken I love the slick lick;-)

  • @MarloweDK i know this guitarist who overplays it, i've grown tired of it!

  • @MarloweDK hi! how is this pedal? haha

  • @giggs102 Its awesome! :). Your playing and talking is so inspiring!

  • Might seem a stupid question but can you alter which direction the Octaver goes in? As in from a lower or higher options, in that way it could be practical thats all.

    Thanks

  • @marsvoltian No only lower, 1 or 2 octaves

  • @MarloweDK it can't make any higher octave?

  • @marsvoltian

Look at the POG. I've heard that goes up an octave or down an octave. I may be wrong, but I thought a bass player in a jazz band I was in in high school said his POG did that.

  • @Tooltrocity You were correct, thanks =)

  • @marsvoltian but they have a device that goes higher i think electro-harmonix makes it. my friend has one.

  • @marsvoltian

the pog from electro harmonics can do -1 and + 1 octave. there is also a smaller cheaper version; the micro pog. check it out, if you like the sound; it's a nice pedal

  • @marsvoltian my octaver can go higher as well as lower

  • @marsvoltian if you want higher look at the pog by electro harmonix i think it can go one higher.

  • what's the difference between flatwound and the other kind of strings?

  • @onixtheone theres a lot of difference between the two, too much to fit into one comment lol. I'd say copy and paste your comment in the google search bar and you should come up with a plethora of information that you're looking for.

  • You have a great eye for basses. Lovin your Fenders, especially that marcus miller

  • 1 guy/girl really really missed the button O.o

  • Great sound from the MXR. What setting do you like to use?

  • Sounds great. I just received my MXR octave pedal yesterday, i love it. It sounds very warm and throaty and tracks really well. And the Mid-knob is a welcome feature.

  • funky groove would you do some bass on my songs?

  • god man you are soooooooo good

  • its like plucking a high voltage wire on pylons... damn fat sound.

  • Sounds damn good!

  • dear god marlowe theres some serious meat on that grooving, wish I could just bust out in a mean groove like you do sometimes haha.

  • man that is a mean mean tone

  • I used to have the Mutron pedal! What a great sound but, you had to have the right amp or sound system to make sure it cut through. I still use a wah-wah every now and again. EBS makes a decent Envelope Filter that has a good iniital pickup. But, with the low B's on my Lawrence and Sukop the initial attack sometimes gets lost. Oh well! I'm still working on my response video for your stuff! :) When you coming to Hawaii so we can we do one together brah?:) Laters:)

  • @thumpah808 Sure thing and thx , i would love to go to Hawaii:-)

  • hey marlowe

i have a question in regards to how to make a video using a direct plugin

all of my current videos are just by using my amp at home

yet i recently got pro tools

i would love t know how to match up the video from my camera and the audio from the direct recording

do you know if there's anyway to do this?

thank you so much, you are a great inspiration

    keep up the amazing videos

  • @chickenandababy For my method go to playbassnowDOTcom/recording-videos/

  • @MarloweDK thank you so much

    i really appreciate it

    i have one other question

if i were to use garage band rather that logic, would i still be able to import the video to sync it with the audio??

    thanks again!!

  • @chickenandababy Garageband only records in 44khz, video audio sync requires 48khz, you will get glitches in sync - trust me ive tried it

  • wow, just when I wanted to hear what a octaver does, you come in with this video :) Thanks, I love the blues feel :)

  • Is that Logic Pro I see in the background?

  • @4stringswing Yes its Logic Pro 8

  • I always thought you're recording with direct plug in? so, all of your videos are recorded with a micro?

  • @aerosmisch No direct, but the talking mic picks up a little bit from the amp

  • @Dudeman2113 Would make you a better bassist period, dont worry about the "technical", that will follow with practice

  • you look like a bass playing Dr. House

  • Nice! ;)

  • Bass Face @ 9:07 !!!

  • How do you decide what you're gonna practice each day?

  • @Barathrun Well, i dont have a strict program, sometimes im transcribing stuff, other times doing some scale/chord exercises, then i maybe have to learn tunes to play with my bands or jsut got a new interesting book on a subject - right now I'm into "tetrachords".

  • @MarloweDK Yes! Tetrachords rock... I got a book talking about them a couple years ago, but I didn't really get into it until recently. It really helps put the modes into a better perspective and the linear thinking is super useful, especially for a 4 string player. :D

  • Marlowe, of year is this bass? It's the new model made by Fender or is it old? It seems to be the 70s! =D

  • @luisbass86 Old 70's

  • I went off bass when i left a band now im really rusty, any tips to get me back into it and get me going again?

  • @bboysmyles Just start - 1000's of videos on Youtube should be of some inspiration;-)

  • Rockin the chin strap. Lovin it man

  • Marlowe, do you practice every single day? When you practice, how long do you practice on average?

Oh, and sweet petal! Heck, I like it!

  • @1trae9 Yes, there is so much to learn. I think i practice for 1 - 2 hours on an average

  • ive got a j bass like that. i love her to death...

  • Nice Thomas. Great octaver sound, I like the MXR.

So far I am still a roundwound guy like you. Pino Palladino on his P-bass almost made me change to flats. Maybe sometime...

  • OH GOD, that is the P bass of my dreams. Natural finish + flatwounds. ASDFADSFASDF

  • Damn, that P-Bass is awesome, sound and looks.

  • This 'MXR Octaver-P Bass' combination is awesome!!! 8) Great lesson too as usual but about the use of the Gm pentatonic scale, isn't it easier to see it as playing a Cm penta. with a D (2nd) instead of a Eb (minor 3rd) ?

  • @Fjord76 IMO no, but if it works for you... Remember that you can reuse your existing pentatonic licks in new ways by transposing them.

  • @MarloweDK Of course.I meant maybe thinking in terms of mode (and then considering everything from C) might be more simple.I see what you mean but whenever I can, I try to stay away from licks;I know G is C's 5th and how it sounds if I start from or stop on that note but i'm definately thinking C when I'm playing Gm penta over Cm.

  • @Fjord76 I understand, but since we as bassplayers are so founded in the rootnote positions, transposing the scale to other locations gets you out of that frame of mind, and it helps me to sudden play "hip" phrases:-) "Licks" (or at least patterns you have under yourfingers) can be your friends, and a zillion blues players cant be that wrong;-)

  • @MarloweDK Playing hip phrases or licks has nothing to do with neck locations imo and i don't get the end sorry :(

  • @Fjord76 No problem, to each his own

  • @MarloweDK you're absolutely right ;) Peace

  • awesome lesson Sir DK

  • Thanks for your answe MarloweDK :)

Emmm...and what camera do you use 4 your videos???

  • @PepeTheBassist I use a Creative Vado HD 3rd gen pocket videocamera

  • luv the growl you get a 1:34 nice; the MXR gives it a growl nice.

  • Hey MarloweDK!

Do you normally use Pro Tools Le to record your basses??

  • @PepeTheBassist No, i use Logic Pro

  • I used to own that same bass in the 70's. Times got rough and I sold it in a parking lot for $150.00...BAD MOVE.

  • I still need me a P-Bass with flats. Now the GAS is just killing me :P

  • you love bending strings

  • @13A55player Who doesn't?

  • @nikklazz

not me dont think it sounds good on bass

  • The string sound out a little too much, but other than that it's very good

  • is that some fred noise..?

  • I've tried out various octave pedals for bass. None of them really get the sound that I would want.....there's usually that delay then that terrible "rumble/noise/phase" that you always get.....I'm still waiting for them to get it right and make an octave pedal that actually sounds good with bass like they do with guitar(the problem being the frequency of the notes?)... But don't take this the wrong way...... as always, you did a very good job playing.....

  • @ZEbass1989 Its the acoustic sound of the bass you hear getting picked up by the microphone, im playing with a very low volume on the amp, hence the string noise

  • @ZEbass1989 have you tried the EBS octaver? It may be the best out there. the faster at least so, no delay

  • @ZEbass1989 in my humble opinion ehx pog is very reliable!

  • @ZEbass1989 Have you tried the EHX HOG or POG? Works pretty well and also creates great Hammond-style tones.

  • @ZEbass1989 Get a micro Pog it doesnt have any trouble tracking bass

  • Noice :)
