So throaty. I understand why people love him and why he has become so successful, but the Italian repertoire just isn't for him. He can't sing without that microphone. I find him fantastic in the German repertoire, so just stick to it, please.
This is the true meaning of word "Tenor" and "Classic performer".
Vocalist of the Year 2012.It's so sad that so many people these days get fooled so easily by pseudo-classical pretenders and aren't capable to truly appreciate the real stuff like that :(
i can not believe the depth of stupidity and ignorance of the last comments both on Kaufmann and Domingo.When is Opera going to get rid of all these "purists" and old fashionists who are totally unable of apreciating a diferent approach on a piece,and prefer to think that modern singers are untalented.. Kaufmann or Netrebko or Villazon are not untalented,they deserve their glory.They refuse to stick to techniques and styles of the old timers! They spread Opera's horizons and elaborate singing!
@vernadakieleni Exactly! Thank you for that! I think the singers of today are very interesting (for me even much more interesting than the old once) but anyway... Unfortunately there are always those "masters" especially on youtube. Try to open ANY video of a superstar like Kaufman, Netrebko or the like and there is someone who knows for sure how to sing better... It's undescribably stupid :D
@Tenorliebe This is the legacy that this leaving mr. Placido Domingo. He has wanted to sing everything (recording in studio) and this way he has made believe to the new generations of tenors that they can sing all. Already the light tenors do not exist, the lyric ones or the dramatists. Now all is right. Where are the bearded women, the crocodile childrens and the trapeze artists? Because you mr. Domingo has turned the world of the Opera into a CIRCUS. Thank you mr. Domingo.
Domingo recorded everything, but he does not have a GREAT recording of ANYTHING. Also everyone knows his high notes were bad. it's very simple: in modern times people care more about looks and acting, and they tolerate bad singing.
@jaketaz But I do not believe that this one is exactly the problem. The singer of Opera must be also a bit an actor and Domingo is the better that I have seen in a scene. His performances are very convincing. I like Domingo singing in a theatre an Opera because it does not leave of the digest adapted for his voice. Is in the recordings where it has failed.
But I can say that Domingo is where opera for the public shifted away from singing and over to acting. I agree that the people need acting AND singing on stage, but with modern singers it is only acting that matters. Look at Villazon, Kaufmann and Dessay with vocal surgery, Florez with terrible middle and low voice, Netrebko out of tune so often - but all good actors. This sends a message to the young people learning to sing.
It is a fact. This is the second best rendion i've ever heard. After Mario Lanza's, of course, but it's close. Mario's interpolated b is very hard to beat...this is a very close second. And I don't give that praise lightly. This guy is a superhero.
Just look at his mouth when he's singing. Great technique, great support from the diaphragm. Give this guy a few years and he'll become the best tenor or tenor-martin around...would give an arm and a leg to be able to sing like that.
Of all the great tenors singing today this is the greatest!! In his later years Caruso's voice darkened and grew more beautiful. Mr. Kaufmann has a dark beautiful voice as a young man. His dynamic levels are just what the aria requires. What a voice and what expression.
M.C. Annaloro
TIENE UNA FIGURA DE IMPACTO, LA VOZ NO ES PARA ESTE TIPO DE ARIA, PERO ES MERITORIO SU TRABAJO, Y LO QUE MAS ME IMPACTA ES LA GRAN TESSITURA DE BARITONO A TENOR LIGERO, ME ENCANTA SUS PIANOS, Y EL GRAN FIATO, LE RECOMENDARIA CANTAR CON ESE "CAÑON" DE POTENCIA VERDI, PUCCINI, EN FIN, PERO NO DEJA DE SER UN FANTASTICO TENOR RARISIMO EN SU FORMA.
@Siriusfanatiker I think you've got the wrong singer. Joseph Calleja is the natural successor to Bjorling in this repetoire, Kaufman's voice is more of a helden-tenor for heavier roles.
Does anybody feels he was putting an immense weigh in his voice? for me, during most of the song he sounded like a baritone struggling...also the lyrics were wrong and misplaced
Went astonishingly well until 4:25 where his mesmerizing heldentenor strenghth messed up this grand piece. He can lose his voice if he continues singing verismo like this. Take it easy on verismo without sacrificing the right emotions that Cilea wanted here. Just my 2 cents.
I'm sure this singer loves to sing but what is important here and is evident nowadays is that to respect singing one must not the love the voice first. To truly respect and follow the art of song then the voice must become innately secondary in a singer's mind. IMO he is too preoccupied with 'producing' sound. This is the curse that we have today. If he looked at how Schipa or Bjorling uses their voice when they sing this he would hear that their use of the voice is more natural and simple.
@Interessant11 - His voice has gotten quite dry. If you listen to his earlier recordings and performances the voice had a lot more ring in the top. I would compare it slightly to Giordani, unfortunately his voice isn't as free at the top as Giordani's is but in the passagio and the top it has some of the same timbre. Still sounds amazing but I definitely see your point.
The best interpretation I have ever heard. I listen to Jonas Kaufman every night and he transport me to higher dimentions. He not only sing wonderful but acts also wonderful. He is those feelings he sings. His songs are from heart to heart. that why it is so powerful. Bless you Kaufamnn.
@petion2010 pur ogni sforzo, some tenors use pur instead of ma. Yes, he made some mistakes, but many italian singers do that too... Pippo Di Stefano and Corelli were the king of it haha, however, they were great great singers, much better than today tenors
I'd like to know if his voice is clear and audible on stage. An opera singer who only has a beautiful timbre, but lacks of projection would have to sing baroque operas. He may have a giant resonance, but does the whole audience hear him?
@kharlitoz Yes. He is audible and clear. I have seen him live as Alfredo, as Jose, and now as Siegmund.
The voice is quite impressive to listen to...it does not have the classical bright italianate squillo, but has something a friend of mine refers to as "lower squillo".
Kaufmann triumphed at the Met as Siegmund for a reason!
Of course ! Everyone is hearing him ! Apparently you don't know much about singing (I ndon't want to offend you). Jonas is one of the best current singers. His voice is wonderful ; I'm a singer too and his my reference.
I can't help but like this, but it does not quack like a duck. There is no doubt that this man has raw talent, but it is highly manufactured. There are moments when the real voice comes out. Hope that he finds more of that as time goes on. He will be a superstar regardless.
@ncvscody I kind of see what you mean. I think is overhyped, in fact, I don't think that he's even the best spinto around. I think lesser known Tenors like Agim Hushi, Ian DeNolfo, and even the very young Thiago Arancam are better Spinto.
@petion2010 Sorry, but really Hushi and DeNolfo are very raw unpolished artists in comparison, as for Arancam he is just beginning, he shows promise and time will tell, Kauffmann is at the top today and has already turned in enough proof of his artistic quality and PERSONALITY, you may not like his vocal timbre but he is an artist.
I know it's interesting.... and i love jonas' voice.... but let's face it, his technique is extremely rough, and it's not his natural voice color... and we can see that in his video singing Un aura amorosa.
Bravo! What a voice. Never expect him singing this aria so well, although not the best by him. Nice high b at the end bringing out the whole climax of the aria. Many tenors omit the last high b and it feels for me not reaching the pain and intensity of the emotion. Good job, Kaufmann!
Come l'invidio! Anch'io vorrei dormir così, nel sonno almen l'oblio trovar! La pace sol cercando io vo'. Vorrei poter tutto scordar! La pace tolta è solo a me. Perché degg'io tanto penar? Lei!
Everybody criticize him, He's definitely one of the best this years. I would like to see you silly critics of nothing standing right there and triying to produce at least the tenth part of his sound. Poor frustrated that could never shine. Because you can not shine if you are not a star.
@mrcharro Kauffmann has an immediately recognisable instrument, dark but well tuned and full of colour, he interprets with intensity and sensitivity he has an amazingly good command of several languages and musical styles and is an excellent actor. So far seems to be able to bear the stress of an international career. I agree with you, he is the best around these days, and I hope he will be around for a long time, at 40 he should have another decade at least, they'll cry when he's gone.
there's a bit of Ramon Vinay in his sound. It could be easier and freer but it's technically honest - we are hearing his real voice. Hmmm...Anyone notice how broad AND FLAT the upper half of his skull is? Maybe it's just my tv screen...
@pullypally Yes and I bet, if he goes on singing with this kind of technique, he won't even be able to sing strained, his decline is obvious. It is really sad, because he has a great material. I hope he won't have the same fate like Villazon.
@pullypally ABSOLUTELY ROT. I SUGGEST THAT YOU TAKE THE COTTON OUT OF YOUR EARS TO HEAR THE PURITY OF THE UPPER VOICE USING THE MAXIMUM SBADIGLIARE TECHNIQUE A DERIVITIVE OF THE GREAT PERSECHINI SCHOOL, WHOSE PUPILS WERE DE LUCA AND RUFFO. ET.AL.
Good performance ! At 4:25 ff he sounds a bit squeezy and strained. But that´s the technical difference between his dark and heavy voice and a lyric voice like Joseph Calleja or Juan Diego Florez. Look at the performance of Joseph Calleja here on Youtube. His performance sounds effortless compared to the version of Jonas Kaufmann. But both versions sounds good. Just different timbres.
@papidou1934 Y'a pas de bug,c'est un coup de diaphragme,çà fait sauvage,c'est racoleur,c'est voulu.Quant à l'aigu,il n'est pas écrit,c'est une tradition qui,comme souvent,ne rajoute rien à la partition et à son expressivité,bien au contraire!
Although I am so mad with Germans in general, you should all be so proud of this singer. I think he is one of the greatest tenors who ever lived - his Lohengrin is Magical - there hasnt been a so mystical and sensitive Lohengrin (not the usual Helden-Screamers)
Can this aria currently be sung any more beautifully than this? I don't think so. The intelligence, line and legato of Kaufmann's gorgeous instrument are at one with the music. Thanks for posting.
So throaty. I understand why people love him and why he has become so successful, but the Italian repertoire just isn't for him. He can't sing without that microphone. I find him fantastic in the German repertoire, so just stick to it, please.

I have a question for anyone WHO REALLY KNOWS music? Is he a tenor or a baritone? If a tenor, what type of tenor is he?
petion2010 1 year ago

Ahh! Qué manera de cantar. Qué timbre!
Yo estoy enamorado de esta interpretación! Jamás la he escuchado mejor.
Gracias, Kauffman por regalar esto al mundo.

@Zaur18
Generally, just look what people write. Partly on this page (linked to È la solita storia) and partly on other pages.
Moreover, he uses a technique, which can eventually have adverse effects.

Bravo! What a voice. Never expect him singing this aria so well, although not the best by him. Nice high b at the end bringing out the whole climax of the aria. Many tenors omit the last high b and it feels for me not reaching the pain and intensity of the emotion. Good job, Kaufmann!

Everybody criticize him, He's definitely one of the best this years. I would like to see you silly critics of nothing standing right there and triying to produce at least the tenth part of his sound. Poor frustrated that could never shine. Because you can not shine if you are not a star.

@mrcharro The best tenor in this Century! Very intelligent, great musician! Great actor! beautiful nature of voice! beautiful color!
For that many poor stupid peaoples are envious!
ducadibudapest 1 year ago
@mrcharro Kauffmann has an immediately recognisable instrument, dark but well tuned and full of colour, he interprets with intensity and sensitivity he has an amazingly good command of several languages and musical styles and is an excellent actor. So far seems to be able to bear the stress of an international career. I agree with you, he is the best around these days, and I hope he will be around for a long time, at 40 he should have another decade at least, they'll cry when he's gone.

levieuxpiano 1 year ago
there's a bit of Ramon Vinay in his sound. It could be easier and freer but it's technically honest - we are hearing his real voice. Hmmm...Anyone notice how broad AND FLAT the upper half of his skull is? Maybe it's just my tv screen...

Beautiful voice but sometimes really constricted, he often sounds pressed.

@bassavoce
I agree with you. Especially in the high notes he sounds strained. You can see the tension in his body during his performance.
pullypally 1 year ago
@pullypally Yes and I bet, if he goes on singing with this kind of technique, he won't even be able to sing strained, his decline is obvious. It is really sad, because he has a great material. I hope he won't have the same fate like Villazon.
bassavoce 1 year ago
@pullypally ABSOLUTELY ROT. I SUGGEST THAT YOU TAKE THE COTTON OUT OF YOUR EARS TO HEAR THE PURITY OF THE UPPER VOICE USING THE MAXIMUM SBADIGLIARE TECHNIQUE A DERIVITIVE OF THE GREAT PERSECHINI SCHOOL, WHOSE PUPILS WERE DE LUCA AND RUFFO. ET.AL.

votre science me confond Messieurs ...

abracadabranque 1 year ago
Good performance ! At 4:25 ff he sounds a bit squeezy and strained. But that´s the technical difference between his dark and heavy voice and a lyric voice like Joseph Calleja or Juan Diego Florez. Look at the performance of Joseph Calleja here on Youtube. His performance sounds effortless compared to the version of Jonas Kaufmann. But both versions sounds good. Just different timbres.

@abracadabranque
francesca7564 1 year ago
@francesca7564 C'est une façon animale d'envoyer un aigu,aucun problème,au contraire.Il se sert du même procédé à 4:39.
abracadabranque 1 year ago
papidou1934 1 year ago
@papidou1934 Y'a pas de bug,c'est un coup de diaphragme,çà fait sauvage,c'est racoleur,c'est voulu.Quant à l'aigu,il n'est pas écrit,c'est une tradition qui,comme souvent,ne rajoute rien à la partition et à son expressivité,bien au contraire!
Salut cher ami.Pardonne cette immiscion.

Although I am so mad with Germans in general, you should all be so proud of this singer. I think he is one of the greatest tenors who ever lived - his Lohengrin is Magical - there hasnt been a so mystical and sensitive Lohengrin (not the usual Helden-Screamers)
LohengrinT 1 year ago
Can this aria currently be sung any more beautifully than this? I don't think so. The intelligence, line and legato of Kaufmann's gorgeous instrument are at one with the music. Thanks for posting.
