Someone COULD do what John Peel did - but definitely not in America. The media is far too profit driven to take a chance on unsigned bands. The fact that there are only a small handful of giant corporations that own most of the media outlets makes it even less likely. They've got stockholders to answer to. There isn't any true competition. ...and people wonder why our culture is going to shit. Normal people could never have a forum like Peel.
As much as I agree that there will never be another John Peel, I am heavily influenced by him and is the reason I got into radio. My show is done with a feeling of 'What would John Peel thnk'.
There's no-one left with that amount of integrity, to have the balls to make things happen and progress the careers of worthwhile musicians regardless of how commercial they are/are not.
And people think Satan Cowell/Simon Bowell has achieved something. Shame.
None finer. A lovely, lovely man, regardless of one's taste in music. I suggest anyone who hasn't read "John Peel - Margrave of the Marshes" do so ASAP.
John championed the band I was in Experimental Gardens in 1983. He broardcast our first single " The one that got away" On Radio 1 making it record of the week and played it a few times on the World service too. That got us interest all over the world. Thanx from Experimental gardens and H.M.H.B.too. Rest in peace you lovely man.x.
If someone out there can explain to me how to transfer cassette to YT I have tons of Peel, including about 15 years of "Festive 50's" . I will always miss him and Ivor Cutler.
@theMacvarish You can buy a converter that rips audio casettes into mp3's now. Maplin do one. Stick the audio into Window's Movie Maker then upload to YouTube. Bob's Yer Uncle. Would love to hear some of Peel in his pomp.
I find it so heartbreaking that he's not with us anymore, because since then Radio One went down the shitter and have never been able to replace him succesfully. Unfortunately for me I never did get to hear his show, but I have checked out a number of artists that appeared on the Festive 50 lists, and I've been blown away by what he discovered and what he played (thanks to him, I got into The Fall, Wedding Present and PJ Harvey). God bless you John, you're a one-off, a revolutionary DJ. RIP.
Spoken to John once when you could phone radio one and youd get straight through to the dj. Was about 14 at the time, we chatted about the hardcore bands, napalm death, sore throat, e.n.t etc, what a gentleman. He dedicated the next track to me by The Relations from Perth, Scotland. Taped it but have lost the tape, absolutely kills me now ive not got that! What a man. R.I.P John
I'm American and I've heard about John for years but never knew much about him until now. These dozen or so youtube videos I've seen on him have really knocked me out. What a guy. There were quite a few legendary DJ's in the 50's and 60's here in the States that ,like John, put music above their own personalities. Tom Donahue in Frisco, Dewey Phillips in Memphis, John R. in Nashville, Scott Muni and Pete Fornatele in NYC. And many more. Britain is a lucky country to have had this man.
John Peel will always be a legend, wish there was some1 who was capable of doing what he did all those years ago, if there was the charts would not be full of the shite it is today and a real diversity of music would still in the charts. On a personal note he got me sacked from 3 morning paper rounds, as I had to listen until midnight when radio 1 finished and did not get up! Would not have swapped it for the world. The word legend is used often these days but John Peel was 1.R.I.P John
There are some really lovely moments on this - Fluff is brilliant, Gedge is genuinely sweet and Mark E is actually nice! - but really, this was the most important broadcaster in rock history and they were running out of ideas. Paul Whitehouse?!
I miss John so much!Nobody could and has replaced him! I would love some tapes of a full peel show!As the video shows above it all he was just a really nice bloke!
Yeah Id sort of forgotten about that post but yes I must get round to sourcing some full recordings of some of his radio shows. Be a cracking listen as I miss him so much. No one since has touched his humility and love for music new and old. BBC R6 tries but it just seems empty now.
Thankyou so much for this. I was truly saddened by Peely's death, and although this has had me in tears, it is still wonderful to watch. Peely was such a humble man, he never wanted praise for his work, because to him it wasn't work it was a pleasure for him to be in that business. A straight forward, down to earth man, but still a legend and a pioneer.
Brilliant. I met John one Saturday night in the mid 70's on the train from Euston to Lime Street after a Liverpool game against West Ham, it was just before Christmas and everyone was in a great mood (even though I think Liverpool had lost) 3 hours of pure joy talking about music and football.
