Oil it? Only if the fan stops too fast when turn off and starts humming then you can oil the bottom bearing but its not like an old desk fan that you HAVE to oil it otherwise it won't run right. Also a ceiling fan can take up to 60 seconds to slow down from speed to speed, if you would have let it longer on medium it could have slow down enough.

My dads old house used to have a ceiling fan exactly like this in the living room. The only difference was it was gold in color.
