Vic ive been watching and transcribing a lot of ur videos for years. i love your tone. could u enlighten me on your tone philosophy? i.e. amplifier, and how u like to set your EQ?
@GLeone221 Thanks, good question, well what I'm going to say is relative so experiment. I don't use much treble (4) Mid (4-6) Bass (3-4) I like the mid frequency more than treble really. Further I try to play with dynamics -soft and louder touch of the strings with the pick depending the mood I want to express. When I play Blues I use a little edge rather than tons of distortion, I like a tube sound with a dynamic range, when I play soft there's no distortion, when I hit harder the edge comes in.
It's interesting to see how you really were in the zone... you didn't give a damn when you would pick up the plectrum. You were so in the song that it was irrelevant. Well done Vic. Great to see such love for what you played rather than what others would say about it. That's a blessed place to be.
@CTuxford Thanks for your thoughtful comment, I guess I was in the stage here I was struggling with the right way to go from finger-style to pick playing, now I have developed a technique holding my pick between the fingers and switching as rapid as possible.Your last sentence is a mind blower, and you're right,I never really think what others think or should think bout my Music, once it accords with my own taste and musicality,I like to be proud of what I'm doing, Vic.
Very nice and interessting playing, Vic. I just heard it from Allen (as you might have noticed;-) Two different versions, two very nice versions. That´s the thing I love in good Jazzplayers, always personality in the playing!

Hey Vic. boy how incredible a sound and now I see what I suspected; the guitar is an Ibanez( thought so by the tail pce.) I have really been enjoying your music. My Romance happens to be one of my favorite songs and I love singing along to it as I am a singer. Your music is very CLASSY!!! All the Best...Pam
I see what you mean. This is a great example of a 'good recording' and now sort of a model for me for 'micing' and EQ'ing rather than to just shove my H4 at everything.
Of course, it's also a terrific song and your rendition is great.
Victor, I would love to hear more about the wooden pick you used on this video.
Did you make it yourself?
How is it carved? Thickness, wood type....
I think that many would be interested on this subject. It really is a warm tone!
What percentage would you give on this pick influencing the tone, adding also the guitar tonewood, strings, pickups, and I think most importantly... the fingers hold and angle on the pick. :~)
Franco, interesting question, I walked in a music store saw these carved picks and thought let me try one, I always like natural products, that's why I always like playing with my fingers(like the first harmonized part), I always tried different picks and I think the thicker the better, they produce more quality tone, but this wooden pick sounds different then a synthetic one, as for the EQ settings, I mostly roll of the treble, lift the Mids and bass this gives the round punchy, deep warm tone,Vic
Thanks Franco, there are certain tunes to simply ask for a Soulful delivery and this is such a warm Ballad I had to put my heart in it. Greets my friend.
Beautiful, tasteful, great tone, on a rock-solid standard. Sure would get me in the same mood as Mary if I was thirty years younger.. Now it just relaxes me Victor :) Nice work as ever.
Thanks John, for your great comment, will be visiting you soon again, to listen to your marvelous Jazz, greets from Holland, the weather is getting quite well here now,Vic.
smooth sound, I noticed you've replaced the original pickup. A long time ago I've sold my GB20, I still regret it. They are very hard to get, especially in the Netherlands where I live.
Thanks djez, long ago I replaced the original pick-up,I found the highs too pronounced,I like a warm round tone, and pick-ups certainly make a difference, you sold your GB-20 man you should of have given it a second thought, well no use crying over spilt milk, greets Vic.
Thanks Bashing.. yes I'm a guitar teacher, with my own music school, I'm teaching in many styles but my Heart lies in Blues and Jazz, because they have the freedom to improvise, glad you enjoyed, Vic.
Vic,I thought to read one of your notes you gave guitar lessons becuse I would like to attend one of them when you teach "sensitivity". You are plenty of talent, my friend. Un abrazo
Thanks Sunny, that part you mentioned is the essential note changing to fit the following chord,it's a half-step but has great impact,I agree with you, thanks for listening, greets Vic.
Thanks Firas, glad I could make your day, people feel it in their Hearts when something is done with passion and devotion, always welcome to my channel my friend,Vic.
Thanks Frank, guess you're right, only that wooden pick adds warmth to the sound that I like very much, let's say an additional small element, greets Vic.
Thanks Stephane for your critical listening observations, it's great you gave these numbers so other guitarists can actually hear what you mean, check out "Footprints" to see what I did with annotations, greets my friend.
Extremely good plaing, Vic. The phrasing is excellent, and that smooth, warm & wooden sound is wonderful. Your playing would deserve a more... I don't know... energetic accompainment. This is the first time I feel that this band-in-a-box-thing doesn't really do the job. But what YOU do... GUSH! Greetz, Jogi
Thanks, Jogi great compliment, you're right I can Imagine that a bass player and drummer "in the moment" would be reacting and anticipating adding more excitement,I'm recording for the sake of capturing the head arrangement (so I wont forget the nice voicings I figured out) Greets Amigo,Vic.
I'm going to invite myself into your conversation with Jogi. With respect I offer a different view about the accompaniment
This is some very delicate and rich harmony you are playing. Because of the complexity of the harmony you are playing it would be easy for a bass or piano to "box" you in (play a note that clashes with the harmony or restricts your use of outside tones.)
The best thing any sidemen can do on an arrangement like this is to stay out of your way.
Hi Allen, really Jogi should be responding to this statement, but I'll give my view , I know Jogi's playing and I think he finds a very subtle level of accompaniment, knowing to play less when necessary, it's like you're stating: Nils Orsted Peterson could also play just what's needed under Joe Pass beautiful themes, I know exactly what you mean, side men have to be very professional not to play too much(less is often more),greets Vic.
I meant no disrespect to Jogi. I probably should have kept my opinion to myself. I did not make my point very well. 99% of the time Jogi is spot on with his opinion. I was trying to say that in this particular arrangement the bass player would need to know what kind of harmony you have in this arrangement before the performance.
Nils faced quite a challenge, I don't thing Joe played anything the same way twice.
There's no disrespect, Allen, on the contrary! Alltough I certanly HAVE the problem of playing too many notes and boxing sombody in a scheme, I completely agree with you on what you say about sidemen!
And YES, if I had the opportunity to play along this song with Vic I would like to discuss the changes with him before performing (as I do with Pat Enz - have a look at our vids and tell me what you think!)
Here, I would try to support Vic with more energy, more on-the-spot-reactions on what he plays. It's so interesting, so inspiring... Of course, the BIB can't do this. I would LOVE to try and show you what I mean with energy...
I understand what you a writing. I agree that BIB has no soul. I think a live upright bass or electric could enhance this wonderful performance. A live bass player could engage in some interesting dialog between instruments. I know Vic could comp some beautiful chords to support the bass when it has something to say. I would love to hear the two of you together.
I would love to get into the queue to play with him as well. I uploaded a solo guitar version of this tune. Vic's arrangement is magnificent. Check out his version of "Summertime" if you have not already heard it. I visit Vic's channel when I need a little inspiration early in the morning. It's a great way to start one's day!
An interesting discussion going on between you guys, you and Allen have been responding one an other and I didn't receive any posts from this, but you guys are sure making this an interesting place to be,the last post was great Jogi ,A chilf is born is a fantastic tune, greets Vic.
By the way, I have been enjoying your channel for a few weeks now. Your latest "A Child Is Born " is a treat for my ears. The guitar is very tasteful. Your vocalist has a wonderful delivery. Your bass provides a melodic foundation. You guys in Europe are turning out some great jazz!!
Nice discussion going on here, that's what's this forum is all about,I didn't get any post when you guys react to each-other but reading it now is just great, yeah Jogi,Pat Enz and my Angel (just kidding) are great and tasteful Musicians. Greets Vic.
Hello my teacher!! Ow, your phrasing Vic, always nice and played expressive....I'm watching not only your left fingers but also your gentle picking technique. It so important to learn your right hand. A real jazzy sound made from it! Hey, the famous lick at 3:35 make me smile...it work effective beside your flowing melodies! :)
Thanks so much Lanang, true what you're saying bout the left hand and the coordination, yeah I love that Octotonic lick, you can make so many beautiful sequences using that in other note combinations, kinda breaks the melody when you play that Stuff, thanks for dropping in Amigo, greetings from Holland Vic.
Greetings Vic. Expertly done, as always! Thanks for telling us about the Ibanez. I would have sworn it was a Gibson. I found some interesting Googling about the GB-20. Keep up the good work, my friend!
Thanks Jon, it's a mighty fine guitar, great I could lay my hands on her when it was affordable,I guess now you've got to rob a bank first and travel to Japan,LOL,greets Vic.
Simply Stunning Victor! You have a great ear for tasteful and rich harmony. The solo is very melodic and tasteful (as usual with you). I don't think I have ever heard this great tune delivered better by anyone.
Thanks Allan, great hearing this great positive reaction from you, I love this Standard and felt I could do a good job on it but this reaction is simply overwhelming, thanks again, greetings my friend,Vic.
I have listened to this several times. It's in my favorite stack. (It seems I have been adding more and more of your performances.) It's great to hear super technical skills used to enhance the melody. Not one unnecessary note did I hear. This is a wonderful example of "creating" art.
Thanks Allen, I'm really honored you see it this way, it always has been my wish to create melodic inventions that are really composition worthy, I mean you'll find an interesting composed theme but after that in my opinion it has to remain interesting on that level,I practice till I feel I reach that point that the composer wont be disappointed, Greetings Vic.
Thanks Eddie, this is an outstanding Standard for theme harmonization and lead playing, if you want you can get my voicings by listening and watching, greets Vic.
Thanks Maestro Scott, was just trying the wooden pick, and it struck me that the sound was very round and indeed mellow, did you ever try them before,Fred told me they don't work for him,I think it's a very personal, thanks for tuning in my friend, Vic.
Thanks Igor, there was a period I loved the way Joe Pass played,he did lot's of finger-style work, but also used the pick in improvisations, this inspiration kinda brushed off on me,thanks for listening, greets Vic.
Well Fred normally I use those Jim Dunlop 2.0mm picks that produce great tone, this was just something I tried out and kinda like the result, thanks for tuning in,greets Vic.
Thanks Terry, it's through what you say, I hit the strings precise but not hard, a little more pressure when more technique is involved, and this wooden pick is very responsive to my style, like it's helping me develop my sound. I heard someone say he's going to start carving his own picks from wood he has in his barn,LOL greets Vic.
Hi sexybrox, it's an Ibanez GB-20 Jazzguitar (taken out of production for quite some years) It's great I bought it in a time that buying such a quality instrument was affordable (1981).Now you have to rob a bank in advance,LOL,greets Vic.
I close my eyes and see little Jazz Cafe in New York full of people seating and hearing Jazz Band. You creat good atmosphere full of positive vibrations. For me, ideal Jazz Performance.
Thanks Artur, I guess what you scetch there would be a very suitable surrounding for this listening Music, listened to by Music lovers, now however the whole globe is listening,LOL,greets Vic.
Hey Vic! This new video from you is so wonderful my friend! :0) Your playing is always a pleasure to listen to and 5 stars isn't enough to leave for you my friend! I hope that you are not too busy at the moment! Love, Tamara xxx
Thanks Tamara, since I started my own Music-school it's more work for me but everything is going OK, in my spare-time (which isn't much)I try to prepare some nice Music for the Tube, cause it's appreciated by so many here, glad you enjoyed this Jazz-ballad,big hug Vic.
Beautiful playing.

Hi Vic, Very good!!!
Exellent hollowbody clean & round Jazz sound.
You take the music coming to you, and great feeling.
I especially appreciated the phrases: from 2:12 to 2:17, 4:09 to 4:12 And from 5:06 to 5:12...and the others of course.
Bravo.
Stephane.

JogiBass 3 years ago
Thanks, Jogi great compliment, you're right I can Imagine that a bass player and drummer "in the moment" would be reacting and anticipating adding more excitement,I'm recording for the sake of capturing the head arrangement (so I wont forget the nice voicings I figured out) Greets Amigo,Vic.
Jazzguts 3 years ago
I'm going to invite myself into your conversation with Jogi. With respect I offer a different view about the accompaniment
This is some very delicate and rich harmony you are playing. Because of the complexity of the harmony you are playing it would be easy for a bass or piano to "box" you in (play a note that clashes with the harmony or restricts your use of outside tones.)
The best thing any sidemen can do on an arrangement like this is to stay out of your way.
allen
carvetop01 3 years ago
Hi Allen, really Jogi should be responding to this statement, but I'll give my view , I know Jogi's playing and I think he finds a very subtle level of accompaniment, knowing to play less when necessary, it's like you're stating: Nils Orsted Peterson could also play just what's needed under Joe Pass beautiful themes, I know exactly what you mean, side men have to be very professional not to play too much(less is often more),greets Vic.
Jazzguts 3 years ago
Vic,
I meant no disrespect to Jogi.
Cheers,
allen
carvetop01 3 years ago
Hi guys!
Sorry, I didn't see this until now.
There's no disrespect, Allen, on the contrary! Alltough I certanly HAVE the problem of playing too many notes and boxing sombody in a scheme, I completely agree with you on what you say about sidemen!
JogiBass 2 years ago
And YES, if I had the opportunity to play along this song with Vic I would like to discuss the changes with him before performing (as I do with Pat Enz - have a look at our vids and tell me what you think!)
Here, I would try to support Vic with more energy, more on-the-spot-reactions on what he plays. It's so interesting, so inspiring... Of course, the BIB can't do this. I would LOVE to try and show you what I mean with energy...
Keep posting, your remarks are very interesting!
Greetings, Jogi
JogiBass 2 years ago
Jogi,
I understand what you a writing. I agree that BIB has no soul. I think a live upright bass or electric could enhance this wonderful performance. A live bass player could engage in some interesting dialog between instruments. I know Vic could comp some beautiful chords to support the bass when it has something to say. I would love to hear the two of you together.
Cheers,
allen

Hello my teacher!! Ow, your phrasing Vic, always nice and played expressive....I'm watching not only your left fingers but also your gentle picking technique. It so important to learn your right hand. A real jazzy sound made from it! Hey, the famous lick at 3:35 make me smile...it work effective beside your flowing melodies! :)
LanangYogya 3 years ago
Thanks so much Lanang, true what you're saying bout the left hand and the coordination, yeah I love that Octotonic lick, you can make so many beautiful sequences using that in other note combinations, kinda breaks the melody when you play that Stuff, thanks for dropping in Amigo, greetings from Holland Vic.

Vic,
I have listened to this several times. It's in my favorite stack. (It seems I have been adding more and more of your performances.) It's great to hear super technical skills used to enhance the melody. Not one unnecessary note did I hear. This is a wonderful example of "creating" art.
Cheers,
allen.
carvetop01 3 years ago
Thanks Allen, I'm really honored you see it this way, it always has been my wish to create melodic inventions that are really composition worthy, I mean you'll find an interesting composed theme but after that in my opinion it has to remain interesting on that level,I practice till I feel I reach that point that the composer wont be disappointed, Greetings Vic.

Suddenly everyone is going to scramble to find a hand-carved wooden pick! I want to get one, too,
and I don't even have a guitar! : ) What an awesome sound. One would think you were holding that wooden pick with a velvet glove, Vic!
BocaFriend 3 years ago
Thanks Terry, it's through what you say, I hit the strings precise but not hard, a little more pressure when more technique is involved, and this wooden pick is very responsive to my style, like it's helping me develop my sound. I heard someone say he's going to start carving his own picks from wood he has in his barn,LOL greets Vic.
