  • VERY good point Paul, many thanks for posting this

  • good cycling and driving if every cyclist was like this then we probably wouldnt have deaths on the road due to cyclists hitting lorries, obviously theres a holes on each side of the fence but sadly not much we can do about them.

  • Very good anticipation that the lorry might need more space. Now if only motorists gave the same! It comes up on the theory tests quite often, questions like - "A large vehicle is indicating left but moves to the right. You should..." People often forget that larger vehicles need extra elbow room to maneuver.

  • Good point well made all BUT lots of cyclists are hijacking this particular HGV problem to advocate not using cycle lanes at all. HGV problem is the same for right side passing too so no gain there, otherwise you are mixing it with the traffic more and even oncoming cars by going out onto the right.

  • At :15 I would look at the situation, but at :20 I would probably go (speaking as a lorry driver).

At that point if he turn left so his front wheel is AT the kerb, his rear wheels would come probably ½ (half) foot into the bike lane.

Turning right I don't think the rear end could tip you off the bike unless he made a sharp U-turn.

  • I was fairly sure it would be OK to proceed without stopping but if the lorry had needed to pull further left to make the right turn, there could have been a problem. The entrance the lorry turns into here is extremely narrow and difficult to get in and out of. I really don't think it's worth taking unnecessary chances near a turning lorry. The accident stats for cyclist fatalities involving lorries are frightening.

  • I'm not too sure if the samll van was going to cut in front of you or just crawl forward but whatever was on his mind really does annoy me! You almost have to believe he is about to cut in front of you and prepare for a week off work

  • Looks like your favourite roundabout again paul

Those railings on the left, combined with the lane, are a real death trap

  • Yes. I don't like the railing design. It would be possible to put reinforced posts in the ground that prevent vehicles driving across the kerb but allow an escape route for cyclists. This roundabout is busy and potentially very dangerous. My partner suffered severe leg fractures and a back injury here 20 years ago when she was hit by a speeding car as she cycled across the roundabout. Driver was apprehended and she received compensation but to this day she'd prefer not to have had the accident.
