I would make sense to completely eliminate the minimum wage (and welfare) if there were a guaranteed minimum income, that would operate mathematically as a kind of negative income tax. Instead of having taxes deducted at the source, people who earned below a certain threshold (or even 0 in the case of unpaid interns) would receive a tax credit.

The one thing that is clear from his speech is that it is not simply a man talking one thing and doing another (As usual in politics). Not even the best actor in the world could get that worked up while speaking and not mean it. A drop of the minimum wage may well make more money for the exchequer than taxing the rich but thats not the point. The point is that we should be teaching the guys who caused the problems in the first place a lesson, even if it costs the country more money.

Michael, great speech, but what are we do do? Labour endorse Croke Park, that's a betrayal of the country.  The only way these people can be prized from their ill gotten gains is by government default structured or unstructured.
