However, with 7 billion people consuming resources, the planet isn't able to repair itself fast enough to keep up with consumption. If there were less people, the planet would repair much faster, By the way, Americans consume 20 times that amount of resources as those living in Third Word countries. This has nothing to do with poor people. In fact, the wealthy consume more resources per capita.
It always confuses me though how all these people would preach in the first world about how there are to many people on the planet and not enough resources etc Yet Europeans as a race only make up about 8% of the worlds population and already have a below replacement level birth rate. Where have you been? If overpopulation were a myth we wouldn't spend so much on housing for all the people in the world. There would be less need for energy (gas, food etc.) and from what I'm experiencing, a better quality of life has become more expensive, and it will become more and more expensive the more people there are since fuel will be more scarce. How much of this is attributable to the atom bomb? In the past, when people got too claustrophobic with each other, they just had a war or two and thinned out the numbers. Now we can't do that, or too many of us will die and civilisation with it. B) 300 years ago there were 20 x more deer. Overpopulation assumes that nature has an optimal equilibrium but just like weather populations ebb and flow. Deer "overpopulate" based on our need for their to be deer. We dont need them so we cull their numbers when they exceed a certain #. We used to have buffalo from Canada to Mexico but that # was culled as well based on human needs.
Lastly its the globalized industrial systems that cant be sustained not human populations on the planet. We need to move to localized food systems. If your economy cant sustain your population locally then there will be distortion in global resources. Dont just say we're overpopulated without thinking in the big picture. Quantify WHY you think we're overpopulating and attack those specific issues.
Ok, we're overpopulated because you cant feed 6 billion people if you're going to rely on local and 100% sustainable food production as you suggest. (which btw, I agree we need to do).
If we assume that we can sustainably grow food twice as well as before the industrial revolution, we can feed about 2 billion. And thats a big if, given the damage we have already done to the environment.
if you really want to decrease population then develop the third world. oh but that would decentralized the power of the elites so they suppress the third world by giving them debt to stop them from developing.
You act as if the "First World" had someone pull them from the depths of uncivilized society and economic turmoil. This is the problem with your theory. Third World is there largely because they choose to be. I have family that has lived for a decade in Bangladesh and throughout other parts of Southern Asia. Planet is doomed either way. If you have less people, they just consume more because prices are lower. When there are more people prices are higher and they consume less - ITS A CATCH-22 scenario! The system is FLAWED! We need more government intervention to rebuild and protect forests and natural lands, rebuild the soil, clean mass transit and last but not least - rationing and limits to income on the ultra rich and laws against the ultra poor having children they can't afford.

There would be less need for energy (gas, food etc.) and from what I'm experiencing, a better quality of life has become more expensive, and it will become more and more expensive the more people there are since fuel will be more scarce. Fossil fuel based energy isn't the only one on earth which can be used for many task such as powering vehicles and many other machines, many alternative energies even do without oil way better at less cost, beside of that there is often more oil discovered than expected. One's own quality of life is not per se finacialy related. Earth is fine!

Women's rights and women's education is the only way to stabilize the world's population. Women that have no options other than motherhood are going to have a greater reproductive impact than women in countries with women's rights. There are 22 million here,and to think you can multiply the population by 300 seems strange. The whole world isnt America so you will have to tell me what an "anchor baby is" children concieved and born at sea perhaps? A quarter of an acre is enough land to grow more than enough food for one person I know famillies who grow most of their own fruit and veg in gardens as small as this. Organic ferti is normal but artificial fert is toxic and doesnt give a higher yield .

Yes the actual potato is a registered insectacide, the Colorado beatle wont even touch regular potatos growing in fields anywhere near the fast food potatos. I saw a youtube vid showing an experiment that involved keeping fast food fries in a jar after 2 wks the fries looked just the same so I suspect that even the microbes know better than to eat them. How much of this is attributable to the atom bomb? In the past, when people got too claustrophobic with each other, they just had a war or two and thinned out the numbers. Now we can't do that, or too many of us will die and civilisation with it. War had a benefit in reducing the numbers, increasing technological innovation, and reshaping national borders and allied groups. It's much easier to fight and kill than agree on things also.

A) I'm agnostic/ atheist.
B) 300 years ago there were 20 x more deer. Overpopulation assumes that nature has an optimal equilibrium but just like weather populations ebb and flow. Deer "overpopulate" based on our need for their to be deer. We dont need them so we cull their numbers when they exceed a certain #. We used to have buffalo from Canada to Mexico but that # was culled as well based on human needs.

Lastly its the globalized industrial systems that cant be sustained not human populations on the planet. We need to move to localized food systems. If your economy cant sustain your population locally then there will be distortion in global resources. Dont just say we're overpopulated without thinking in the big picture. Quantify WHY you think we're overpopulating and attack those specific issues.

Ok, we're overpopulated because you cant feed 6 billion people if you're going to rely on local and 100% sustainable food production as you suggest. (which btw, I agree we need to do).
If we assume that we can sustainably grow food twice as well as before the industrial revolution, we can feed about 2 billion. And thats a big if, given the damage we have already done to the environment.

You act as if the "First World" had someone pull them from the depths of uncivilized society and economic turmoil. This is the problem with your theory. Third World is there largely because they choose to be. I have family that has lived for a decade in Bangladesh and throughout other parts of Southern Asia. I say this because this is what has helped me form my opinion on the topic.
