  • ill never forget when CSN sang this song at an outdoor concert on a cool summer night...probably one of the most beautiful memorable moments of my life. THANKS CSN!

  • @TV0U812 ? ITS EASY

  • if you really want to appreciate this song, try playing and singing it yourself

  • I want this video on my U9000 IDEOS X6 unit.

  • 80 feet at the waterline...wait for it...NICELY MAKING WAY. and then @1:02 when the harmonies kicked in I go t a rush. Fuck this is good.

  • @iThinkThereforeiCan Ain't it though. Got to be one of most beautiful songs ever written, sung, or thought of. Brings me to tears every time I listen.

  • @soaringvulture Wimp.

  • these guys are so liberal it ruins anything they do

  • @mewirth4 how is that a bad thing?

  • @mewirth4 Mind clouding mumbo jumbo. Has NOTHING to do with music.

  • @mewirth4 So you wouldn't let them drag you out of a burning building? Get real.

  • @gregboyds haha how about wearing a bucket on yer head, or kabuki makeup, breathing fire? Thats all that matters to many.

  • I always wished I wrote this song. However, Steven Stills wrote it, played it and sang it. He really is a genius, and an underrated guitarist.

  • I'm a metalhead but I LOVE this song. Genius...gives me chills every time.

  • This video is a favorite on Mogadishu

  • No words needed here, just listen! Heard it for the first time in the USMC on Okinawa, Japan. Ooooh yah!!

  • Best harmony this side of 49 bye byes. An amazing coming togehter of talent.

  • Timeless music...it's great to hear the new generations are listening and keeping these songs alive...the lyrics are poetic and true...hard to find in new music. Bury me with my CSN box set...

  • a classic for the ages!!!!

  • My chill bumps are constant! Love this song!

  • Still a great song!

  • @natmort9902 A great song stays great forever.I agree with all comments.

  • Somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you. That line helped me through hard times more than once

  • @degr345 going through what you had gone through..

  • @TV0U812 Im sorry. stay strong and keep listening to good music like this

  • What a treat to be driving in the car and hear this on the radio...great tune :)

  • Stills was CS&N

  • One of the best 3-part harmonies of all time. Few have come even close to this.

  • how many times i have fallen! oh man i love this tune.

  • Pure Classic!!!!

  • LOVE this CSN song! If you would like to hear a Great cover, search youtube Nucleus Southern Cross, this band does a Great job at this song! The band is 3 brothers, their vocals are Unbelievable!!! You won't regret taking a couple minutes to check out their version! Nucleus doesn't have as many hits or subscriptions as some other bands because they refuse to use the "fake subscription program" for a fake audience. It will Truly be worth your time to check them out!

  • I hope everyone goes out and buys the CD this is from rather than just listening to it here on Youtube. We need to support the artists who's music we enjoy.

  • tahite fiji man wana go home

  • After 30+ years of following Jackson Browne, The Eagles, Todd Rundgren, Kansas, Bonnie Raitt etc., this could be my new favourite record! Just think about the chorus to "The Pretender" and you'll know what I mean... Also, I would strongly urge everyone to check out Tina Dico... Start with "Warm Sand", "Break of Day" and you will be hooked!

  • This is a song when you think there is no tomorrow, it tells you that you have the future right in your hands!

  • Never, in all my life, have I wanted to go to Papeete, Tahiti as when I listen to this beautiful song. The album was superb, too.

  • @jjsharshaw

The song is excellent, the album - fair at best

  • @bargeraltamont

"In a noisy bar in Avalon"

    Off the Calif. coast

Go there sometime, it is beautiful.

  • What a fantastic composition... the " noisy bar in Everlude " lyric is therapy unknown to science... Long may they run.

  • This is one of the most poetic songs I have ever heard. I've always loved it! It brings out the dreamer in me and makes me want to sail to the Southern Cross:)

  • I had just finished high school when this came out. I miss great music like this.

  • This song is a metaphor to me about a girl I lost, she was all about music and singing(played a mean sax) and music is her name,Yes I lost her to another guy,and the love I had for her was indeed an anchor, but you know what? some one fine will come along, and I'll forget about loving her.

  • Love this song!

  • AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH!!!!!!

  • My favorite CSN song. From the moment it came out.

  • Ahh..back to when they could REALLY write music :-)

  • The truth you might be running from is so small,

But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a coming day!

I think my favorite line of any song, ever. So profound and succinct. The little truths we hide from about ourselves and our situations and the world around us, they really are trivial when you look at them...but when you integrate them into how you live every day and you own them, it's big...it's the dawn of a whole new day. Integrity...it is where we are truly free.

  • The Southern Cross depicted on a blue shield is also the unit patch for the U.S. 23rd Infantry Division.

  • I have seen the Crux. The Southern Cross. The heat of the day and back breaking work. The Sea is my life, and probably will be my death. I go with a smile, the Sea, she loves me. And always will.

  • Hi Blozier....the lead singer on this is Stephen Stills...not Graham Nash for sure..he has some awesome songs too, not Neil Young for sure..his voice is sooo recognizeable...not David Crosby (got fat and arrested for drugs and guns many times...lol)..Stephen Stills is in the pic on the right side.. I was about 12 when they did Suite Judy Blue eyes..

  • By: Crosby Stills & Nash & sometimes Young**

  • This song has always touched my heart in a big way. I just feel it down to my very essence. Been through quite a bit and this song makes it all worth it....I guess xoxo

  • 80 ft. lwl? Big boat!

  • This may be silly, but which one is singing lead vocals, Crosby, Stills or Nash?

  • @blozier2006 in this song, stills i believe. pretty sure.

  • @blozier2006 Crosby wrote it, Stills sings it. Go figure :P

Actually, Crosby learned to sail at a young age, so almost all of their songs that reference maritime themes or beach themes are Crosby's work.

  • @XSE256 but stephen stills says he wrote it with the curtis brothers

  • @XSE256, that is intelligent input!

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • @blozier2006 Stephen Stills.

  • Why can't we just enjoy the music and leave the artist's personal problems out of it I am an avid Eagles fan but have thought Don Henley was an ass for a long time but it doesn't stop me from listening to his music. and there are a lot of artist political views i don't agree with as well but i still respect them as musicians;; Enjoy The Music and Stop All The Hating!

  • @jsh2261 AMEN, Can't we simply agree to disagree? I don't believe as most others but I still love them for what God has given them. Doesn't mean I have to LIKE then... The two are too often confused love/like

  • Why'd Crosby get booed?

  • hm...i thought this was CSNY...

  • @facecheek no niel young was after this song

  • @smokeymcpot375 ... Sorry. This song was recorded in 1982, kind of a "comeback" song. Neil Young joined CSN in '69.

  • @smokeymcpot375 Neil Young was before AND after this song. There is a reason why the others joke that his nickname is "Sometimes" (as in "Crosby, Stills, Nash and Sometimes Young). This song came out in the early 1980's when Young was trying hard to break with his past (which meant keeping his distance from CSN) and doing a lot of musical experimenting (a techno album followed by a rockabilly album followed by a country album).

  • I feel so badly Crosby got booed...people just have no taste and no class and certain no f*****g manners. man!

  • @glimmer2158...ooop...I get it. Sorry my friend,.

  • @glimmer2158: Huh?

  • Unbelievable.

  • 6 people have never seen the southern cross.

  • @glimmer2158

    6 people are dickheads.

  • 6 people don't know why twice you ran away.

  • my roommate use to get furious at me for playing this song...over and over.. truly one of the best.

  • And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do

    Perfect!

  • Awesome song....love Stills...not a huge fan of Crosby but Still and Nash seem decent enough.

  • I wish to accept the challenge to make a single legitimate bad comment about this song. First of all, let me say that I LOVED it. I still love it on some idealistic dreamer dipshit level, but face it. It only really works as irony. That's how the song is to be enjoyed by a thinking adult. Swim in its cheeseyness and enjoy. Also, David Crosby is a douche.

  • i had never heard this song till i heard it on my name is earl, now i cant stop listening! thats karma!

  • @funjonno71 , I don't know how old u are, but Timothy B. has never gotten the credit his deserves. If u like Stills , listen to Tree Top Flyer, , I went to see Crosby, Stills and Nash at the Florida Ther. in J-ville., After playing together, they each soloed, Crosby got booed, Nash did get enough respect, they let him play. But when Stills came out. it was majik, Everyone on their feet through out entire performance and wouldn't let him go. Nuff Said!!!!

  • I just doesn't get any better than this. Only 3 songs make me cry every time I hear them. "I Just Called To Say I Love You" "Back to the Island" "Southern Cross" Don't ask me why. I am a 63 yr old full grown straight white male but those songs, THIS song in particular, kick my ass. "So we cheated and we lied And we tested And we never failed to fail It was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested. Somebody fine Will come along Make me forget about loving you"
  • excellent,classic,brilliant.

  • One of the best songs, ever. The 6 people who dislike this must be nuckin' futs!

  • 6 people have never seen the Southern Cross...

  • this has to be one of the most timeless songs in history............my 4 year old LOVES this song!!! i love this song!!!!!! it will be around forever

  • I will NEVER get tired of this song...that solo ...so sweet

  • Great music, nothing better then those 4 jamming down. Thanks to artist like CSN&Y making music great.

  • Great music, nothing better then those 4 jamming down. Thanks to artist like CSN&Y making music great

  • 5 people have no idea what good music is !!!

  • Great song. Brings back memories.

  • What 5 dummies don't like this song?

  • 501 like welcome :D

  • "She is all that I have left, and Music is her name"

  • 5 people were so drunk they accidentally clicked thumbs down :(

  • one of the the most beautiful songs every written, what a sound CSNY, no better

  • This song is way cool and brings memories of more peaceful and happy times. This is like a 3 min vacation to the beach. Just enjoy!

  • very great song

  • @TheVoiceofresistance

Not really following your logic here.

  • @awg012 That is because there is none

  • @TheVoiceofresistance you are an idiot...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @TheVoiceofresistance You are so ignorant and hateful.

  • @TheVoiceofresistance you, sir, are a douchebag. Your father, and his father before him, were douchebags. If you have kids, they are very likely douchebags, or will be douchebags. It isn't even worth reasoning with douchebags like you because douchebags like you don't listen to reason.

I will say this, though: Nixon, who was more or less the antithesis of those "whiny" hippies, did a whole lot to destroy the country. Also, those "whiny" hippies paved the way for the civil rights movement.

  • @TheVoiceofresistance if I could do a double thumbs down on your comment, I would.

  • f the ol crap where da soulja boyzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • @ionman40isback Get lost

  • one of my all time fav songs. The very last time I saw my brother, we were singing this like we had wonderful voices or something,,,,thats my last memory of him! I will always love this song!

  • Great song.

  • The southern cross

  • 444 likes.. 4 dislikes... Sounds good to me

  • OMG - Such memories!!!!!! I haven't listened to CSN or CSNY in YEARS! Thank you!

  • GREAT song

  • 3 people are philistines

  • And my love is an anchor tied to you

    Tied with a silver chain.

    I have my ship

And all her flags are a flyin'

She is all that I have left

    And music is her name.

    That, gives me chills

  • @miniraptorX Me too...every time. Favorite lines. I was a sailor, and I don't think I'll ever be done with the sea. I'm land-locked!

  • good music, libtard musicians. Really don't care or appreciate the politics views of these men, but a fantastic song

  • although it has homosexual overtones, a great song still.

  • I can't !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love this! Thank you posting!

  • suavely executed

  • Stephen u wrote a Peach and I thank You TURN THIS BITCH UP WAY UP and Sail Away

  • @haggishater Your mama.

  • I can't play this song LOUD ENOUGH!!!

  • @sugarcubicle They're singing about the most famous constellation in the southern hemisphere known as the Southern Cross, not the confederate flag. It is 4 stars that form the shape of the cross.

So significant is this constellation to marine navigation, it actually appears on the flags of Australia and N Zealand. Sighting the Southern Cross at sea meant that you arrived and completed a treacherous journey. Google the image. Even in photos it is a vivid sight!

  • @arkady714 I'm so glad I am not the only one who knew that. That's I love this song so much.

  • Comment removed

  • @sugarcubicle We can only hope that part of history will repeat itself.

  • My girl's favorite song; she would sing it at 4 years old.

  • love and freedom

  • this song makes the hairs on my arm stand up..it brings a tear to my eyes it so beutiful

  • Brilliant ... gotta love the harmonies...brilliant, brilliant, brilliant ...

and I've seen the Southern Cross ...

  • I can't wait to see the southern cross for the first time!!!!!

  • that gaze of Stills, so poetic, 80 feet of the waterline, nicely making way...

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • Beautiful Song! They don't make music like this anymore ... and that's a shame.

  • Does no one in youtube land have the music video?

  • I lived in Lahaina, Maui in 1976 and CSN^Y lived on a boat anchored off Mala Warf, by my house. I believe the boats name was Monassas (?) and the Tatoosh (?), owned by the dude from easy rider, (oh yeah, Peter Fonda), was anchored next to it. Anyway, I have memories from this music that are real. They know. I'm fortunate to be alive to know all this..if anyone cares

  • @scantace1 In the summer of '77 I received two gifts: a 15' kit sailboat (Dad had won in a business deal) and the album CSN; which, of course, had "Shadow Captain." The boat, christened "Red Beetle" was built by two neighborhood buddies and me. We were 16 and spent two summers listening to CSN and sailing Red Beetle on Long Island Sound. The music of that album, as well as this song, catalyzed teenage boy friendship and a lifetime of sailing. FYI, it IS good to be alive and I do care.

  • @scantace1…. I care : ) I live in Kihei and can see the S.C. from here. I love CSNY and the music they made. Makes me wish I was living on a boat and listening to this song at night, Aloha

  • The only way to understand this song is to listen to the words. One of my favorite songs. Everyone can get something different out of the words. Great song!

  • I HAVE been around the world...almost. I want to be buried at sea with this playing. Anyway, for those who wonder: "My love is an anchor to you, tied to a silver chain"...the silver chain refers to the trail of phosphorescent light (disturbed plankton) in the wake of a boat at night. Ghostly, dreamy, and beautiful in the distance as you leave your past behind.

  • @e1p12007 Aint that something :)

  • @e1p12007 Your description of the glowing wake is so beautiful - the most spiritual moments of my life have been in a small sailboat far at sea, on a clear night, with the sparkling stars echoed by the plankton - like sailing through the universe on a starship... gosh I miss it! Thank you for the memory!

  • @e1p12007

    Great stuff. Nothin said...just felt.

  • Most people think the silver chain is jewelry, As an Eagles fan since 1973, and a metal smith, it was quite refreshing to see that there are others who got it! Blessed may u Be! :)

  • @e1p12007 man...wow... ....um.... <3

  • @e1p12007, and how many of us thought that the "silver chain" was some piece of emotional capital, some piece of simple jewelry, yet when you we all know it will not pass...

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • ...when you see the Southern Cross for the first time...ya understand now why you came this way...

  • I worked concert security when they played the Coliseum in Houston,Texas.

    Early 70's.They were great.

Good memories.Wish I had kept the security T-shirt.

  • awesome..then and still is ...

  • I defy anyone to make a single legitimate bad comment regarding this song. YA CAN'T! It's that good.

  • @vinkleman Five Assholes did. Must be the crap in between their ears.
