We evolved to have an inherant understanding of right and wrong because societies which were better able to help and live with each other prospered while those that sought war and destructiona above all else perished. See: Romans VS Greeks. The romans conquered others with no regards and thus they were destroyed. While even though the Greeks were conquered they live on. It is natural selection.

Yes people are essentially good, it's their decisions, choices, tendencies, and heart that ultimately makes them who they are. Rather they are conscious of their intentions and/or consequences of their acts.

@DeMause I think that you either can't see the other point of view or refuse to see it. I agree with your statement, but unfortunately, there is the counter argument, and it may be true as well.
When you say people "always have a reason" it is an assumption. "Always" implies perfect consistency and this world isn't known for perfection. Your assumption may be right, but some people do evils things for reasons that they themselves cannot explain, e.g. a Manchurian candidate or an ignoramus.

What you say about evil can also be said about good, and vice versa, therefore, maybe, just maybe, some people are inherently good, just as others are evil/bad, & the only way one can justify this is by a) their own actions b) foundation (law/discipline/customs) c) knowing one's heart--the motive and intent.
Some may say that there can also always be a reason for doing good things as well.

An example of doing good for no reason:
I have $5 and I give it to a charity, I don't take a recipt to claim on tax. Since I don't believe in god or kama what I jsut did was a good thing for no reason. In the converse say I saw somone drop $5 and I took it for myself. I had a reason: because I wanted $5. It may have been the wrong thing to do, but I had a reason.
Doing the wrong thing for no reason would be seeing somone drop a credit card, then taking it and destroying it.

Even if there are more people who would take the $5 than would donate $5 (which I don't think is the case but w/e) there are definantly more who would donate than would destroy the card. taking the $5 is a neutral act, as it is simply self-preservation instincts putting yourself before others. So on the people are good, you just hear more about the bad ones..

Sorry to bring this up from the dead but i think that people do good things because it makes them feel all good and righteous in return. You ALWAYS make the decision that best serves your purposes/intentions and that returns you the best sense of accomplishment, and therefore they (the decisions) always have a reason. Wether you can execute them or not is another question.

There is evidence for the age of the earth drawn from many sources, but mostly through radiometric dating. Radiometric dating of Earth's rocks and rocks from outer space show that the entire solar system is around 4.6 billion years old.
