The best thing(s) about this is that it is live and very different from the LP cut, and if you like T-Rex / Bolan, you are hearing sounds you have never heard on this familiar tune off the LP. He is not everyone's cup of tea. In the US he did not have massive coverage on the ariwaves, but a few of us got it (at the time).
Marc's guitar sound is just huge...... He always had great tone but this is just so massive. He's a very under-rated guitar player and could kick ass with the best of them.
Oh my god!...this KILLS! I don't know where you found this, but thanks so much for sharing. Like every song Guns N Roses ever covered, the original is infinitely better. Love it.
Holy shit. I am blown away. This has always been my favorite T. Rex song, but I've never heard it this heavy. It's fucking amazing! And as a drummer/percussionist those bongos and that drumming literally has me shaking w/ adrenaline. This is so amazing.
True musicianship isn't about virtuosity (although you must be technically good to a certain extent), it's about having your own unique style and being creative and original. Marc pretty much had all those qualities and then some. That's why he's one of my favorite musicians ever, because there absolutely no one like him. Great guitarist, songwriter, singer and performer. He deserved way more props as a rock n' roll icon.
I saw Bolan live in 1975 and boy could he play the guitar. he played from his soul unlike most others who payed from their hearts. He was a real ROCK and ROLLER
@robinrobin1 wow really!?!?! that is one of the most badass solid state amps I have ever heard! I'm a bit of a tube (or valve for my Brit mates) snob. there are about 2 solid state amps that I have heard that sound decent. this H&H makes it 3! thanks for the info
MARC had a great sound coming out of those amplifiers,it's not always about technical ability,(which i feel Marc had also) it's about feel.raw rock and roll emotion.i love MARC for that.
I must've seen the performance of 20th Century Boy from this Musikladen episode a million times, but didn't even realize they performed another song. On top of that, it's the only live clip of Buick McKane I'm aware of, too. And it's just 100% brilliance and a perfect example of Bolan at his absolute godly peak.
" With my Les Paul ... I know I'm small ... but I enjoy living anyway ! " DYNAMITE ! THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL ! Bolan had " flaming hands and bleeding fingers " thankyou for sharing this !
Hendrix didn't sing for one, he didn't write songs, and he wasn't that much of a showman. Why compare different profiles? "Marc's guitar skills weren't bad".. Who said that crap? You can't be everything in one: have perfect guitar technique, write incredible songs, sing with terrific voice and dress like no one else. But Bolan did have it all .. as for his guitar playing never heard anyone play with such a drive at least :))
@Alena367 Hendrix did sing and write, and was a great performer as well. No need to bash him to make Marc look good, they both are great in their own ways.
@IAmPlaysWithSquirrel Yes, I know now that Hendrix did sing and write texts so I was a little mistaken, but still... what I meant was i don't understand how they ever can be compared. Because Marc was a poet and a messenger, and he was so different really that I just don't understand how... There are some other, closer artists, like Cat Stevens or Bowie that can bear drawing parallels, at least.
@dutchbolanfan be honest - what makes you feel it more...when some flash player plays 3 millions notes per second? or when somebody like Bolan bends one perfect note over and over again for 2 bars? don't know about you but I will take the later.
But noone played with such a psychedelic vibration...how you don't understand that hendrix is one thing and bolan is completely another, can't be compared or mixed ;)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ive watched a few Bolan vids now,....so not impressed....i dont hear Hendrix..dont insult Jimi like that....and its too bad that he had that amazing les paul and couldnt do more with it. just callin it like i hear it
Hendrix also used alot of fx for much of his playing...not that that's a bad thing but its true.....Bolan was influenced by him and never claimed to be him. I prefer Bolan's playing anyday, Jimis often sounded messy and a splurge. Marc's playing was far more melodic.
@dutchbolanfan Another reason I hate labels. "Glam rock" turns people off who shouldn't be. Maybe that was my problem.
This is one fascinating dude. His Tyrannosaurus rex period couldn't be further from this, and was just as cool in its own right. But rock? I've never heard a purer rocker than this.
I'm a fan of T-Rex n I have to say this song is AWESOME!!!! It totally kicks arse!!!! The guitar riffs are so cool, this sort of music is fantastic!!! This would have to be my top favourite T-Rex song!!!
I think this is my very favorite Bolan video ever -- the guitar tone is amazing -- remember how Marc said in a Melody Maker that "Buick Mackane" was intended to be "Zep Rex" -- astonishingly GOOD!!!
it just BLOWS you away in my eyes no band could match that today, and that music is over thirty years old wow we lost so much when he died , but he gave us a lot when he was alive, he is forever my main man
Marc was an excellent music, very smart and sensistive guy...I guess T. Rex deserved a better place in history rock for its music contribution. Kiss, Poison , Alice Cooper are babies if u compare music talent.
