@HptmSteinhauer no, it was on very hard. i never play any total war campaign or historical battle on anything other than very hard ;p did you tell the hastati and prinecps to fire at will and gaurd position? did you tell the velites to not skirmish? did you use your calvary carefully, and keep your general alive? did you pause to set up your formations? did you tell all your units to attack hannibal when he finally shows up? if you did all this, then im not sure why it's not working for you...
@F2Fun I took the time at the beginning to set up my units in exactly the same order and as close to the same formation as you did possible. Everyone was on guard, and all ranged weapons were set to fire at will. The velites still had skirmish mode enabled, but considering how it played out I'm not sure that mattered very much. Roman cav went down too easily, general stayed alive until after my lines had decimated in the front. It was already chaos when Hannibal showed up

@HptmSteinhauer turn the skirmish off on velites. when somewhere along the line is getting weak, send the velites in melee to help keep morale up. keep your general near your troops, and only use your calv to engage their cav if they're flanking. if you use your calv to flank their troops, just charge, and then pull out (aka keep cav casualties to a minimum). when hannibal shows up, no matter what, tell ALL your troops to attack him, and get your surviving calv to circle around and surround him
Man, if you are the commander of the Roman legions, you will never give any command for your troops when they are in a trap!!! It is easy to make in a game but not in a real battle
There were 2 full Roman & 2 full Allied legions + the remanants of 2 Roman & 2 Allied legions that had fought at the Trebia River. The legions from the Trebia battle could have been from maybe 40 to 60% or so of their original strength.
Very good video, but didn't look historically accurate. The very reason the Romans lost at Lake Trasimene was that they were attacked while still strung out in marching columns, before they managed to get into the three-line formation, and the Carthaginians were on top of them even before they had time to throw their javelins. Still Flaminius were able to rally a portion of his army and held out for three hours before he was killed. Most of his troops were unorganizable, however.
"The very reason the Romans lost at Lake Trasimene was that they were attacked while still strung out in marching columns"
- No that's the reason it was a complete slaughter. They still would have lost fighting on three fronts with their back to the lake unless they could break out which would have been exremely difficult.
Not exactly, it still took Hannibal three hours after all to liquidate the two legions, which means the fighting must have been quite fierce. Fighting with your backs to a natural obstacle was actually a benefit, as it steeled the troops from routing becaus they know that they have nowhere to flee, if they were organized that is. The initial Carthaginian charge must have routed some of the Roman columns and slaughtered them, leaving the remaining Romans to make an isolated stand.
Actually, many did try to flee into the lake, and most drowned (beacuse of their armour), oh well. Of course, the game engine can't handle the actual numbers, or even close to that, which worked well to my advantage. And the reason why I did survive was partially due to the fact that I DID NOT try to get into a three-line formation, instead using a less conventional tactic. But by far, this was for fun, and the part until "I take over" is all preprogramed into the computer game Rome Total War
well, i took less casualties, finished the battle faster, and kept my general alive XD surronding is usally not good unless you have much more superiour training, morale, and usually numbers. numbers and morale were highly lacking at this battle, for the romans
You know it is so funny to me as an educator, plus masters students in history. Hannibal Barca lost in the end YET the whole world over studies this great general and his battles over and over again. IF only Hannibal knew how his life would affect history and the world. I am sure somewhere in heavens he is still waging battle against his arch enemy the romans.
what i can i say except! Badass love it. I will have a project in my class after the holiday season which will allow my students to play Rome total war, they have to choose a side and play for one week and say how they do. it is for a grade they are curious and excited at the same time.
I tried this setup exactly on medium several times and could not get it to work. Were you on easy?
