Hi Bill, Wondering if that vibrator is for to step up the 6V to some high voltage for the plate voltage? I know some old radios that used 6V or 12V battery used a kind of inverter using an special valve ( which makes make and break contact) to step up the voltage.
It is so difficult when we speak different languages, haha, for my also it is difficult to write, if I speak about the radio of 6V of car, which tube takes in the final stage of audio? I wait understand himself, thank you... Fer
great vid!!! amazing how things change!! i have seen these in restored cars, but never saw the guts!! good luck in restoreation!!! thanks again for posting!! sincerly , ed
Howdy Bill. I was just scrolling down comments looking for someone who might have recommended making the dial glass. And there he is: IzdsI0! This man is right on the money. I bought polycarbonate transparent panels at a HomeDepot for $7/pop. Can't find any? Just send a reply. I'll be honored to send you one at no charge or shipping cost. "Just cause you're one of the good guys": anyways. their from GE plastics LEXAN .Item Description: 7-GE XL10. 18x24 .093 Clear. All the best bud.
Really interesting info Bill, although I'm not familiar with old radios that5 much.Jerry has never returned my calls,I don't know what is wrong with him! I'm getting upset,he has never done this before,I'm going to get his work number and call him in Cincinatti.5 Stars-Jerry
Do you have any books on reading circuit diagram or basic electronics or even troubleshooting Iam still messing with old radios but what to Learn as much as I can any help would be very appreciated
That's an interesting radio...I haven't seen a car radio with a variable capacitor before, all the types I have worked on have used variable inductors for tuning.
Nice old car radio! I've never seen a tube one before! what is the purpose of the vibrator? that is an area in radio which I have never studied. hahah I think of things 10 years ago like gosh that was 10 years ago! but I'm sure 20-30 years from now I'll look at the stuff I'm doing now and think wow :P
Hi CoolBlue, The vibrator is like breaker points in an old car ignition, it is needed because you can't put in DC into a transformer, transformers work on AC and the vibrator produces pulsating DC at 60 or 115 CPS so the tranny is happy.
That's quite an interesting radio, Bill. Any idea what year it was produced? I used to collect the Automatic Tom Thumb radios, and even have one of the ones that are bicycle attached. I think they're still in business up here in Boston, although they haven't made radios in years and years. Thanks for sharing it with us. It would be great if you could restore it and post the videos. Radio Daze might have that glass dial scale, or you could make one. Thanks, again.
Hello Bill, i impressed for the radio, it´s in exellents conditions, sure it´s fantastic when you finally reparation, congrulations,. Do you have a mail? I am interesting to compart information, i hace a vibrator for 12 V but i don´t know how it work....
Thanks Fernando, The vidrator has contacts that make and break and produce a pulsating DC so the transformer can step up the 6 volts to run the plates of the tubes.
Just think of it as a old car ignition with points.

Hi Ravi, Yes it is like the points in an old car ignition, mak and break, it is the transformer that steps up the voltage not the vibrator.
Thae vibrator is just a set of contacts the switch open and close.

@fernando140887, As I recall I think the audio output tube is a 6AQ5, but it has been years since I bothered to look at the tube numbers.
I don't have the schematic on that radio, that would lists the tubes.

Hi Bud, I appreciate that very much, but I had a guy PM me asking me if I wanted to sell it.
I may if the price is right but so for now without a shop of toole, equipment, etc. I can't do any repairs anyway.
But I will keep you in mind.
It is hard to do anything without a workshop.

Hi Norbert, No I don't all the books I did save are in storage.
The internet is a great place to learn.
I also would try "all american five radio" here on youtube, he has some great turorials on basic radios.
Do a youtube search as I could have spelled his channel name wrong.

Hi Ixds10, I would say it was made in the 1940's.
I may check RadioDaze, but not having a shop or parts handy, I will have to wait.

Hi UMA, That is the story of my life, I used to sell some items on eBay and I DID get a few cents for the items.
No I will keep it the radio is small and easy to work on, just need that dial glass.
