It's been a long time since I tried it and I only played Rayman. There was nothing wrong with the controller for that game. It didn't use the overlay buttons, but the idea is perfectly fine.
I can't see what is stupid about that numpad. You could use it for many different functions... just like the keyboard in front of you and only noobs would be whining how complex, difficult and painful is to play Starcraft.
Well, I can see why the Jaguar failed. That controller is a beast! Plus, the whole overlay thing is a pain. I had the same problem with the Intellevision. 3 buttons, Option?, and Pause (like swapping START and SELECT). Then there's the whole number pad thing. It looks easier to use the control stick, control pad, and buttons at the same time of an N64 controller. How much did the Jaguar cost? Like $200? Well, I ordered one for a few games, but wow, that controller is a ginormous mess!
I suposse they tried to make it like the old Atari consoles .... like 5200 ... only problem ... they didn't knew the "phone keys" stuff was silly ... ah well
Can you imagine trying to remember all those damn buttons! AGH! Thankful that most controllers have 8 buttons only now. 2 shoulder, 2 triggers, and 4 regular buttons, along with a d-pad, and two analog sticks. Way better than this phone board crap that Atari made up.
You had to put stickers on the phone dial button thing to know the controls to the certain game you were playing? Damn that sure sucked. So thankful for Sony and Nintendo making controllers with regular buttons with 2,4, and 8 buttons only now. Come on, a fucking phone dial on a controller to play? That's like playing cell phone games, WTF?
I used a Jaguar controller once. After a few minutes I thought it was the worst controller ever made up to that moment. then came the Dreamcast controller and the original X-Box controller. But still, the Jaguar controller is still king as far as bad controllers go.
for people who said the original xbox controller sucked: if you hated that controller look at this monstrosity of a controller! games werent even online then (except doom for the PC) so why the hell is there a keypad on the controller. ever since the atari 5200 atari's controllers were shit and made no sence. the only one that made sence after then were buttons on the lynx.
It would have been cool if one could use the Jaguar as a telephone with a keypad like that on a controller. Not that that would be all that useful, but it would still have been cool.
One of the best controllers made.I've played many modern games that would play so much better with the keypad.Turok,GTA3,GTA Vice City,Golden Eye,Castlevania SOTN-all just a few of the many games that would play better with the keypad. Those who hate on this controller, obviously never used it.
i think there was a reason people never used it, cause it was shit, gimme a playstation pad or a sega saturn model 2 pad over this any day of the week
how? ur sayin that most modern games would benefit from it, how am i gonna play GTA3 with a phone keypad?! like i said there's a reason why ppl never used it, im not sayin u should'nt have an opinion im jus sayin...
& there's no need to be rude, makes u sound like a fanboy O.o
All these consoles with phone keypads look so cheap to me. It's like they didn't know what to think for a good controller layout so "oh lol, let's just shove a fucking phone keypad, i guess that'll work lol"
The Jaguar is a pretty bad 32bits wannabe even if it was advertised as 64bit, the N64 is truely 64bit, but how the ps1 (32) and the Dreamcast (128) comes here on your list?
Anyway, everybody knows above 16, it was a well sounding commercial hype. Well we can categorize the consoles by those bits if we want to, but do it well and don't blur consoles into one category which have nearly a decade difference in the launch date.
Ehmm no. The failure was it's marketing, not the system. They couldn't sell them anywhere, because Nintendo dominated the market. I have a Jaguar, it's great, beats any other console from 1993. I know, cause I have every other console. Most people with an opinion about the Jaguar, never owned a Jaguar, that's what's most amazing about the whole thing. It's a great collector's item, technically ahead of it's time and never pushed to it's limits, the software could have been far more advanced.
yeah but Atari missed the boat again, like they did with the 7800, also the controller sucks, I don't own a jaguar but I've held the controller and I can't imagine playing a game with it for a long period of time
The controller is really okay. I honestly prefer it over my way too complex PS3 controller, and they're really nice to hold. But that can be very personal ofcourse. I just recently bought a second jaguar controller for multiplayer games. The only interesting thing about these controllers is that they're almost the same size as the console XD
Well, you're half right. Most games were bad and not enough games were produced. That was the problem. The Jaguar was never pushed close to it's technical limits. But a 16 bit machine???? No. Inside you find a fat object processor of 64 bits, linked to a combined 32 bit graphics processor and 32 bit signal processor. Technically it was way ahead of it's time, but many people, like yourself, judge consoles by the way games look, but those are 2 different things. There are many awesome homebrews.
I know that the Jaguar is not a 16 bit machine. I was saying that the SNES IS A 16 bit machine and had better games. Also the Jaguar's number pad sucks, who needs that.
i had one of these and i found the pad . well the plug for the pad it has pins in the and they bend easy and the best game i like to play on was wolfinstin with the big bossis with mini guns in there body qand dogs jumping out at you
I didn't know the Jaguar used a number pad and sheet overlay. Why so many buttons? And the concept for a sheet overlay was already dated even back in '93/94.
now the atari jaguar controller dit had a 4 directional button on it,well they could also release next to it, a controller with a 3d stick on it for 3d games.
i wonder why the hell the,re numbers on it like the 5200 controller, maybe for paswords or linking up consoles???
@justiceiscoming Well your ignorance obviously reflects your age.But for your knowledge there have been a lot worse (amazingly) .And though bulky by today's standards, this was actually an innovative idea for back then as they did try to do something new, something less mainstream. So you should give Atair some credit for trying something different As for the micro-soft comment, true PS did set the standards for the controllers of today, but micro-soft improved it. I prefer my 360 to my ps3 anyday!

Also, on a humorous note, all the left over system casings are now dental teeth cleaning cases. Look it up.

In my opinion this joypad is ugly, but its difference is interesting.
Jauguar is not a 64 bit machine! Most of the games do not even look better then a Sega Genesis game. As a matter of fact alot of Sega Genesis games look better!
el control sin la etiqueta parece un telefono. podria llamar al 0-800-BASURA con eso. y el tipo aprieta los botoncitos no se para que carajo si no esta conectado ajajaj
Atari sux with controllers look at the 5200 controller it's a nice design yes, but it breaks so easily. this is one of the reasons ATARI is done with consoles
Incredibly ridiculous!!! I think Atary forgot they had to make a controller for the console when they were already done with it so the controller was just like a last minute thing..."let's add all these buttons to make it look cool, oh and make it really big so it looks "different" to the other console's controllers"...it looks incredibly ugly and are those phone buttons on the bottom? also, you didn't need 15 buttons or more for 16/32 bit games
the controller may of been big, but it was still nice. It was really nice for old FPS games, switch a weapon by pressing a button, go to any weapon u want.
To me the Jag controller is one of the best. It's one of those you can hold normally without trying to squezze as much fingers around it as possible to get a bloody grip. The key pad was very good and using the overlays was no problem. Once you know the functions of the keys for a game you could leave it off anyhow.
Wow, you have to change different cards on the number pad to play a certain game? Genius...... No wonder gamers complain about the controls on Jaguar games. This makes me happy I had a good old N64 and a PS1 back in the day. Not a bad demonstration though, I'm easily able to see the awkwardness that phone-controller has.
The cards were cool for starters, once you know the game you dont use the cards. Besides, some overlays just looked very good. And to me the "fone controller" was really handy for games with lots of options.

Atari sux with controllers look at the 5200 controller it's a nice design yes, but it breaks so easily. this is one of the reasons ATARI is done with consoles
corky415 4 years ago
Incredibly ridiculous!!! I think Atary forgot they had to make a controller for the console when they were already done with it so the controller was just like a last minute thing..."let's add all these buttons to make it look cool, oh and make it really big so it looks "different" to the other console's controllers"...it looks incredibly ugly and are those phone buttons on the bottom? also, you didn't need 15 buttons or more for 16/32 bit games

the controller may of been big, but it was still nice. It was really nice for old FPS games, switch a weapon by pressing a button, go to any weapon u want.
GamingPalooza 4 years ago 2
True. but for modern fps games you need analog sticks.

Not if everything is to your left and right and not above you.

I'd rather own a 3D0 than a Jaguar, but I'd probably not be willing to cough up $700.

Fuck 3DO

It had some arcade perfect ports, but it isn't worth $700.

hmm those extra buttons couldve been used for cheat codes? that wouldve been a good idea. The controllers aint as big as people claim them to be..

To me the Jag controller is one of the best. It's one of those you can hold normally without trying to squezze as much fingers around it as possible to get a bloody grip. The key pad was very good and using the overlays was no problem. Once you know the functions of the keys for a game you could leave it off anyhow.

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS!?!
the sega genesis 6 button is
better than that big ass thing!

The D Pad was not very good, the rest was vvery nice. With this controller could have been done so much cool games.
Strategie, Simulation ...
Does somebody know how Sensible Soccer used the buttons?

That controller should have been in some horror movie or something. It just looks bigger and bigger... It will haunt your nightmares!

The Atari Jaguar... Man, it had so many possibilities. Mostly, it's hardware capabilities were untapped.
If they had been tapped, I'm guessing Atari would still make consoles today.
Of course it wouldn't have stood against the PS1, but it may have beaten the N64 and the SS.
Invict2403 4 years ago
Wow, you have to change different cards on the number pad to play a certain game? Genius...... No wonder gamers complain about the controls on Jaguar games. This makes me happy I had a good old N64 and a PS1 back in the day. Not a bad demonstration though, I'm easily able to see the awkwardness that phone-controller has.
GameHermit 4 years ago
The cards were cool for starters, once you know the game you dont use the cards. Besides, some overlays just looked very good. And to me the "fone controller" was really handy for games with lots of options.

I believe the Intelevision did that too.
