  • People...it's called TRADITION AND RESPECT...unless you've been in the military, most of you will never get it...

  • Which situation would be more favorable for the soldiers - this guy crossing the rail to pick up his trash, or not owning up to it and letting the trash roll/blow to the feet of the soldiers?

  • My question is this: what would have happened if the visitor had simply let the (water bottle?) roll away from him? What if it rolled into the path of the guard?

  • if he didn't go back then he would have been escorted by the police and possibly to jail.he shouldn't have picked it up in my opinion

  • I was scared s**tless just watching this. the tone in their voices..jeeez.

  • I love how the guard looks like he is ready to charge when he see's the guy.

  • I have great respect for all of those who have stood that post.

  • what exactly is the tomb of unknowns. who is it for, ive been to the one in washinton but not sure, is it for the dead soldiers with high rank??

  • @theonlyashleybrooks1 The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a place where unidentified Soldiers are buried from the Korean War, World Wars 1 and 2. there was previously a Vietnam Soldier buried there but his body was identified through DNA, and that tomb will now remain empty. The tomb is to honor all the American Soldiers that were killed in action and could not be identified. Their ranks are not known because they are "UNKNOWN SOLDIERS"

  • So I understand the responsibility of the guards, but what if something accidentally falls and blows into the area. Or do you have so sign something swearing that won't happen?

  • stupid visitor

  • piece of trash blew out onto the ceremony I can understand he didn't want his trash ruining anything but still common sense would have dictated not to cross the rail.

  • I think some people need to understand that these aren't the fuzzy hat redshirts you might see in england.

  • I can imagine them arresting somebody.

"IT IS REQUESTED THAT YOU PLACE YOUR HANDS INTO THE AIR"

"IT IS REQUESTED THAT YOU LIE FLAT ON THE GROUND"

"IT IS REQUESTED THAT YOU REMAIN SILENT WHILE BEING SHOT"

    "Wait, SHO-"

"YOU DID NOT FOLLOW REQUEST! *Shoots*"

    Crowd: :O

  • The Marines will guard all and never YELL at a individual unless (A) you are pointing a weapon at us or (B) you are saying that we are not worthy of defending our country. If you have to say about that, than speak your mind on a piece of toilet paper and wipe your ass with it.

    SEMPER FI

  • one of our former cadets work there, he'll be expecting things like that

  • It's amazing, looking at these comments, how many people simply have no respect for honor or tradition. I'm beginning to see where all the hippies from the 60's went......

  • For all the people who say something along the lines of "He was just picking up his trash..." Please realize that this ceremony is not just about "Protecting A Tomb", It's about protecting the memory of soldiers who gave their lives and will never be remembered by name. The man who dropped the trash wrong for dropping something, but clearly the ropes and chains are there to keep people from doing exactly what he did. In the middle of the explanation speech, he should have know better.

  • is it just me or does his movement remind you of how video game characters move, just saying.

  • @me213xtsk This isn't a video game.

  • The guy was trying to retrieve his litter out of respect for the tomb. Big crime. The Sentinel is a big hero for traumatizing a civilian for trying to respect the tomb by picking up his litter that he accidentally dropped. Madness! Anyone who applauds that overkill is stark raving insane. The military isn't here to traumatize civilians over trivial matters. It would have been sufficent for the Sentinel to approach the vistor to make sure he didn't go any further into the area...period.

  • @JetMechMA They are not allowed to approach visitors.

  • @JetMechMA Traumatizing? Good lord...

  • @JetMechMA he was enforcing the principle that no one walks on the tomb no matter what. he wasnt trying to tramatize a civilian he was doin his job as a guard.

  • @JetMechMA they have security guard that would have pick it after the changing of the guard

  • The guy then left the ceremony to change his pants.

  • Arlington Cemetary (Ft Myer) is guarded and attended to by the most perfection oriented soldiers there are, be they honor guard, band, or burial details. A special sort with amazing patience, fierce dedication (check them out in blizzard conditions), and what I think is a calling of sorts. They are spectacular, and Unreal441, noone has tried to find the "What if"........the voice and presentaion of arms is enough to stop them in their tracks. I don't reccommend you try it. =)

  • IF YOU CROSS THE RAIL THEY WILL TORTURE YOU THEY WILL TICKLE YOUR FEET TILL YOU DEAD

  • if i was that guard...I'd be fired and sent to jail for overkill

  • That guy was like...what cha gonna do your guns empty lol

  • Was it just a kid?

  • is he picking something up that blew into the area? I think i see him grabbing a paper cup maybe?

  • @perryinjax He dropped his water bottle and then when trying to retrieve it kicked it out onto the walk.

  • What the hec was the visitor thinking? Where was he going and what was he trying to do? An educated guess at his intentions?

  • If your a visitor to Arlington National Cemetary, don't forget it is a Cemetary. So please don't be repremanded by the guard. It's embarressing to the guard, to the other visitors and to yourself.

  • The whole meaning of the unknown soldier is tpay respect and help the families of those missing and mourn those unidentified. Dont dare leave any petty youtube crap here.....Respect and respect only.To all countries that have their own unknown soldier and to mine. Age shall not wary them, lest we forget.

  • 66 people crossed the rail

  • why would you cross the rails thats just a sign of disrespect

  • I actually dont think that he should have been yelled at, he dropped something. soo...

  • I love it! SHOOT him!

Do not disgrace what it here!

  • If you look closely at 0:07 you can see that he dropped something on the floor.

Maybe a soda can (don't know if they're white though) or little ball.

I understand that person, but I also understand the guard...

  • One of the smoothest port to order arms I have ever seen, and I was stationed at Marine Corps Barracks 8th and I.

  • I laid the wreath at the Tomb and The guards seem so nice when they coming up the stairs to greet you then when they turn around you better know what you are doing otherwise they aren't the nicest guys in the world.

  • He handled that like a pro.

  • could someone explain to me what is going on? i understand the part where he is getting yell at but what is this event about?

  • He dun goof'd!

  • does anyone know what he said?

  • I once coughed while the exact same guards were guarding and they said nothing... They respect you're space, so respect theirs

  • WOW Impressive!!!!!!!!!!!! Very smooth!

  • WOW Impressive!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what did the guard say when the person crossed?

  • I'm British, and i like seeing the tomb guards. I just wish our guards got as much respect as yours do.

  • 1st time I have seen this.....brilliant..God bless the USA Military.

  • I think NEVER cross over at any time there!

  • * Awkward silence *

  • wht did the gaurd say?

  • 0:07 wht does he say?

  • I saw almost the same exact thing happen when I was there when I was 14. I was an Infantryman 4 years later. Sand Hill.

  • Lol , he was just grabbing a rolling bottle.

  • Just to clarify some of the well intentioned comments about the Sentinels disobeying orders during Isabel. No, that did not happen. A couple of trees fell at the far ends of the plaza, but the Tomb Guards were never in change. Believe me, Tomb Guards are not going to disobey an order.

And in this video, you may want to look in the background ... the Relief Commander also stopped and order the person back behind the chains. (They are never louder than when someone crosses the chains.)

  • lol, i was here a couple days ago for my washington dc school trip, and some kid's cellphone rang during the changing

  • The Guard & or The Guards are doing there "JOB"!!!!!!

  • RESPECT !

  • It is an amazing ceremony

  • wow i would of pooped myself if a Guard yelled at me like that. haha

HOOAH! proud to be an AMERICAN!

  • I bet all of the people who guard this tomb just wait for someone to step over a little just so they can yell ^^

  • Don't mess with him; he has aviators.

  • How weird.. Nothing like needlessly putting on a show for what could have been a simple inspection of a gun and a switch of duty..

  • i respect this and all but honestly... this would have to be the worst job ever.. walking around a tomb of people who no one knows for hours at a time.. in any weather condition.

  • What does the guard say? I can't tell.

  • what happens if someone has a stroke in from of him.. can he help or will he just let the person die?

  • disrespcetful doing that well done stupied ....

  • Only the US military could get dressed up in best military attire THEN wear Sunglasses! What next Chewing Gum? Very sloppy!

  • @samthegreencat47 Marching in the Virginia sun in the middle of Summer with Marble all around you, I wonder why they wear sunglasses.

  • they should be allowed to give warning shots

  • what if the guy ran up and hugged him :3

  • What you happen if you ran past the rail? What authority do they have? Can you be arrested? or just escorted off the property? I've always wonder that.

  • @UnReaL441 The Guards will detain you and then you will be arrested. Arlington is a military installation, and do you really want to violate the sanctity of Our Tomb of the Unknown Soldier I sure hope not.

  • Don't you ever mix up Army Infantry with a marine. You see those blue chords on their right shoulders? That signifies United States Army Infantry, not Marines, and certainly not Airforce. The Marines can guard heaven for we shall always guard the Unknowns.

  • THAT ISNT AN OFFICER! Jesus the Guards are Enlisted Personnel only which is why the inspector is a Staff Sergeant.

  • @Dablkwid0w2008- He says "It is requested that all visitors remain behind the chains and rails!"

  • he deseved it i mean even if its an honor guard he's still a guard none the less

  • Remain behind the rail!

    Even if there's a fire!

  • smoothest reaction I've ever seen, I wonder if they make em practice their response over and over again

  • i wouldve sharded my pants is those terminator people yelled at me

  • Figured out what he said. "It is requested that all visitors remain behind the chains and rails"

  • What did the guard say ?

  • what did he say when he was yelling?

  • Wow I never seen this before what did he exactly say.

  • hahahh thats funny the kid scurryed back so fast

  • where did the guy cross over in the video? i couldnt see it.

  • @matto874 if you watch the bottom left corner you can see a hand grab a water bottle. He ducked under the rail after dropping and then kicking the bottle accidentally.

  • I want to know the "warning" the officer rang out when the spectator crossed the rail

  • @Dablkwid0w2008 "IT IS REQUESTED THAT ALL VISITORS REMAIN BEHIND THE CHAINS AND RAILS!".

  • @Dablkwid0w2008 its in the description of the video but ill write it here too "IT IS REQUESTED THAT ALL VISITORS REMAIN BEHIND THE CHAINS AND RAILS"

  • @Dablkwid0w2008 He said "It is requested that all visitors remain behind the chains and rails"

  • @Dablkwid0w2008 read the description, its in there

  • @Dablkwid0w2008 He's saying, "It is requested that all visitors remain behind the chains and rails"

  • I know he was beet red after that officer gave him the riot act

  • @3rosesred: That's the descent way to request when a guard in duty is far away from the spectators !!

  • Respect my Authority!

  • he should have been shot in the leg !

  • @3rosesred That is correct and the Guards were told to stand down during a bad storm ( I think in the late 80s) and they refused and stood their post. As a former Marine, these guys get huge respect.

  • @Toddinfantry The stand down during a storm myth is simply that. For a military unit to disobey a direct order would constitute insubordination and could result in a court martial. They stood guard as the storm was not considered a direct threat.

  • Why do they march the way they do?

I'm serving as a guardian in His Majesty The Kings Guard of Norway, so i do know a bit about marching

  • @larshenrik91 its just custom. clean cut, respectful, and precise march

  • this makes me proud to be an American!!!!

  • What rifle is that? An M1 maybe?

  • @ianrkav probably m14. they look identical, m1 is the civilian version, while the m14 is the military version.

  • all i have to say is, OWNED!!!

  • He stepped into his house without taking off his shoes. Big mistake! XD

  • Get SOME!

  • only jesus christ should all people follow. He is true king

  • Anybody understand what the guard yelled at the guy? I couldn't make any of it out.

  • The life long pledge these men make, and live by, to be a guard at the Tomb is simply awesome. Way to go men from a proud veteran.

  • Are those aviators that he's wearing?

  • never cross, ever, those marines are trained at a moments notice to LET YOU KNOW! stupid kid..

  • he got told! hahaha

  • whoa! NEVER cross over during the changing of the guards.

  • @MJRoxMyRhinestoneSox - Never, ever, cross any ceremonial military honour guards, in any country! The most sacred place for all militaries in all over the world are the graves of the unknown soldiers, which explains the intensified, exaggerated precisioned inspection of the guard. this is the American way. Live with it, but give them some respect.

  • I respect these guards more of which than anything. Why? Because they do something not everyone can do. One hard job in the Army, especially to be in a place for the servicemen who are unknown and buried there. Very very sad place to be.

  • @synysterlud To be honest, and I might be wrong, but I think the Air Force does the guarding.

  • @navyguardf18 At least you know that you are wrong, that is the first step. The Army and only the Army guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

  • Jeeezzz, um saaahhhreee.

  • rofl all nwo guards

  • @sprucepantherkmt you sir have made the most disresepectful comment to the military.

  • looks like the person dropped something and is just trying to retrieve it i dont see where people are getting the idea that he was trying to disrespect the tomb when you can tell he was never gonna move more than a yard from the rail pause at 0:08 if ya dont believe me :D

  • @Bigglesworth93 he's not disrespecting the tomb but you're not supposed to cross the railing. ever. for any reason. period. even if zombies attack.

  • @lilblake90 #LOL

  • @Bigglesworth93 yea but no matter what you NEVER CROSS the rail EVER, u might get away with it if the guard is facing the tomb

  • Very very nice. Other guards around the world rely mostly on policemen to keep the spectators in order. But I think this imposes respect more absolute without breaking the ceremony. First time to see something like this and very impressive. These are real guards.

  • Do they wear parkas when it snows an raincoats when it rains?

  • @SnickleFritz79 No, I don't think they do. There are some vids of them during snow etc.

  • anyone know what he said?

  • @feldman13 So an officer follows them around for the rest of their life to make sure they do not drink or swear? Hmm, probably not maybe we should dig deeper. Where did you find this "FACT".

  • It's always humbling to see them doing this duty, even for a fellow soldier.

The one thing I can't tell from the video is what was the person doing? You only see a hand. I've watched them do this many times but have never seen a guard have to challenge anyone like that.

  • @Willysmb44 The spectator dropped a water bottle and was trying to retrieve it. Even though it was in good intentions you "DO NOT" cross the rail.

  • @RickInIsh Thank you I appreciate your kind words. Always remember "jokes" are intended to be funny, not whiny and childish.

  • @RickInIsh I stand by my statement.

  • After further research I have also found that the side arm carried by the relief commander is also unloaded.

  • @bucknat1 I am guessing you are a wannabe or a child, otherwise there is no other reason for your ignorant comment.

  • how embarressing, haha

  • @nickgt111 lol,i thought the same... probably in front of his kids or friends... shame shame...haha.

  • There are several youtube videos showing the sentinels reacting with similar language when someone encroaches on the restricted area; so obviously they are trained in how to react. It brings up the question: What does their training say they should do if someone is foolish enough not to back off at the warning?

  • A similar thing happened to our group. We (our group) were visiting the tomb and the man was making his cycles. He had dropped his cell phone beyond the rail and had apparently tried to get it. He stepped forward, gun in hand (s?) and told him something that sounded to me like "no flash photography", but I was further away. He returned to his post. The changing of guard happened right after, and once it was finished, a less gilded soldier walked out and retrieved it. I doubt he got it back.

  • They are guarding as I write this... that is amazing dedication

  • @3rosesred thankyou.

  • @3rosesred Thank you . I assumed that was the case but wanted to not post without have as I said before facts.

  • @wyldsydeDOTNET According to your description, the guards cannot shoot anyone, but if someone was lethal enough to kill a man, would the Honor Guards be allowed by law to shoot back? This is purely a curious question.

  • @em0andl33t Quite a few years ago a man charged the tomb with a gun, and was subdued by the Guards, the Guards carry "UNLOADED" weapons, all of the weapons are unloaded. There are MPs at the nearby Army base, and there are Police and security guards around the cemetery. If you are planning something however let me know how it works out.

  • Kill! The Old Guard is amazing. 'nuff said.

  • I don't know what's more impressive; that he reacted so fast, or that he did it in stride, as if it was planned all along. I always wondered what would happen if something actually happened during a CotG ceremony, figured they'd break the routine and react like any normal soldier on a battlefield.

  • I don't think he actually "yelled". He was doing his job and telling the guy to get back where he belongs. That's the way the give orders. Before this ceremony begins, everyone is told to stay back, there are signs, etc. It is his job to maintain the utmost respect for the unknown.

  • he got owned.. and was nearly banished...

  • Don't mess with these guards!

  • Are Marines not allowed the guard the tomb?

Is it only the Army that protects the tomb?

Or is there something similar for Marines?

  • @PowerfulFellow Only Army guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

  • @wyldsydeDOTNET Because the Marines would have bayonetted that guy.

  • @RickInIsh Yes, the Marines would have directly disobeyed orders and killed an American citizen for crossing a rail in an attempt to not disrespect the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. You sir are a gentlemen and a scholar. Or maybe a childish person who must not possess the base intelligence it takes to respect all branches of the United States Armed forces. Yeah probably more of the last one!

  • @wyldsydeDOTNET and the Oklahoma Civil Air Patrol (as of may of 2010) my good friend was a part of it and he is a civilian.

  • @cbkraft What are you saying? That the OCAP is part of the Tomb Guards? not this one if that is what you are implying you are wrong.

  • @PowerfulFellow it is the tomb of the unknown SOLDIER...not Marine.

  • @PowerfulFellow That is an honor for the Army. As a Retired Marine, I/We understand the directive for the 3RDID. We are proud for them in what they represent. Each service has it's own special unique duties that help highlight the best in the service. For the Marines, it is guarding the foreign embassies, the "President's Own" concert band, the Silent Drill Platoon and HMX-1. The USAF guards and maintains Air Force 1.

  • @PowerfulFellow It's an Army Post, Fort Myer, all services participate in the burials, but noone else is allowed to Guard the Tomb of the Unknowns to my knowledge...

  • @PowerfulFellow Marines get to guard the President. :)

  • @EvilFurby24 Are you talking about the MSG team at the White House? Because they don't guard the President at all. They're basically just doormen.

  • @PowerfulFellow There is something similar for Marines. We have the Presidential Guard. As you will see Marines outside of the White House and Marine One (the Helo).

  • wyldesyde, do youknow what the guards did during 9/11? Were they still on guard or did they go to help?

God bless all those who serve our country.

  • @USAFFuturePilot Great question I started searching but have yet to find anything. If anyone has "FACTS" not opinion or myth, please post it here.

  • I know they guard the Tomb 24/7 365 days a year, no matter what the weather is. I went to D.C. for an 8th grade field trip, and our school got to be part of the wreath ceremony, and they told us that the Tomb has been patrolled and guarded 24/7 continuously since 1930. One of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed in my life. Its definitely something that gives you "goose bumps" and that proud feeling in your heart.

  • @USAFFuturePilot ....They stay and guard the Tomb, 24/7,365 Days a year. The news did say that there were personnel from the 3rd Infantry that assisted at the Pentagon.

  • how stupid of that person to do that.Thats flat out disrespectful.

  • for the people who think the guard challenging the visitor is wrong think about what you're saying, which is basically that the guard of the tomb should not guard the tomb. what's the point of having a guard if they are not there to "guard everything within the limits of their post."

  • I think a butt-stroke or head-stomp was in order!!!

  • hahhahahaha awsome

  • "Also they can swear, and they can drink" not on duty, I hope.

  • @warblerab No on duty they are dedicated soldiers. Unfortunately there are a ton of myths that people pass on stupidly without fact checking.

  • What did he say?

  • @DarkBlood1337 "It is requested that all the visitors remain behind the chains and rails."
