I try to bite my tongue but sometimes just can not. Why do some people on these threads feel the need to post such negative BS. Comparing one artist, band or concert to another is cool but why do some feel the need to belittle others performances?
This is great music. But I take a position that there is great music out there today. You have to turn of the big syndicated radio shows and start looking for the Independents.
Were I live we have a radio station that years ago I would have said they were second to none. They opened their doors in 1967 and played this stuff when it was new. I wore their patches, stickers... Sometime in the 80's they went mainstream and now they are part of Emmis Communications. They dumped the DJS and pipe in BS from all over.
@JOHNHOF1 For awhile I felt like others have said here that there was no good music out there. It was hard to finally admit that this once mighty station was now putting out junk, they had gone completely commercial. But once I did that I found the music I like is still out there old and new. You just have to look a little harder for it.
Pretty amazing that they performed the same summer another little party was playing in a Farmers fied in NY .. They drew 100,000 all by them selves, and Woodstock drew 500,000. I'd say thats pretty damn good numbers for one bad and one concert!
You can get this on DVD, the soundstrack has been enhanced, be prepared to be blown away. This was ahead of it's time back then. For the other rock stars there in the audience, intimidating for sure.
Thanks for posting this. Although I'm a musician, I'm not into technical stuff that much, more into the feeling & meaning of music... nonetheless, here Steve Winwood is not playing the Hammond organ, but the little blue portable one... does anyone know if it's a Vox organ by any chance? I'd be very grateful if anyone who knows would let me know... Thanks...
I dont know this for sure but it might be what was a popular item back then called RMI....I think it was piano and organ but my memory is hazy on it... but now that you sparked my interest I will google it
I agree, I doubt it's a Fender Rhodes, never seen a blue one. Most Vox organs were red tho' (the Continental, Jaguar, Corinthian, etc.) or brown/wooden coloured. With Winwood playing the Hammond, I think he'd be more likely to have an electric piano than a Vox organ... You see, a guy I know, years ago, found a Vox organ (in a rubbish skip!) that looked like that & I wondered if that's what it was.. the guy doesn't even play keyboards but wouldn't sell it to me... Anyway, the question's still on
I think your right about it being an electric piano. I think he's got the Hammond for songs with organ, and a electric piano for the songs that call for it.
Actually, watching the clip again, Winwood plays it in this clip & sounds just like a Vox organ, certainly not an electric piano... In the film at one point you can see the back of it, but I can't make out what's written on it... I bet it's the Vox this friend of mine found in the skip!!! Some guys have all the luck!!!
I own 2 vox jaguars, I dont think this is one of them. Looks more like a suitcase wurlitzer. elec piano..with the removable fliptop. Vox organs had a criss cross stand.
I saw the blue Vox I mentioned, but I really don't know what this is... I saw an RMI last week; it's wooden coloured, & it says 'electra piano & harpsichord' on it.
You play a Vox organ? Where are you? Are you in London by any chance? I need somebody for a band! I'm very good, I promise! Get in touch!!!!
hello. I worked in music stores for years and I know this is an RMI Electric Piano Harpsichord. The trim on the box and the stand are a dead give away. I also forgot to mention the large RMI logo plate on the lower right. If you ever have to move one they are boat anchors for only electronic 3 tones. They had no tuning headaches like Rhodes and Wurlitzers. The sounds were analog preset tones. As soon as wave form and other digital keyboards came along you couldn't give these things away.
But today there is quite a market for vintage electric pianos--on both sides of the Atlantic. Companies specializing in restoring and maintaining them have sprung up in many places and these instruments are much coveted by professionals who have come to realize that the electronic clones will get you close but they lack all the nuances of these lovely keyboards. But they're not for everyone. Chick Corea still plays a Rhodes Mark V, but Herbie Hancock is stricktly all electonics these days.
@willwelsh816: Indeed, he often does play a Hammond B3 organ, but as you can hear, and see for yourself from the footage, on this occasion he's not sitting behind a B3, he's playing a small electric piano--an RMI, which was popular in Britain and Europe back in the day.
Sorry to go on about this... thinking about it, Winwood was always known as THE organ player (Hammond mostly) whether with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, or Blind Faith... admittedly he played piano every now & then... He even plays the Hammond on Lou Reed's Berlin ( I feel a bit sorry for people who think of Pink Floyd's The Wall as THE album-concept), which has also Jack Bruce on bass!
Oh no, in fact, I love it. Most people find this stuff boring, but I find that the more you know about how a song was made, or with what instrument, the more interesting the music becomes. And yeah, saying that The Wall is THE album is crazy, there were plenty before that. But that's a discussion for another day..
This is a Buddy Holly song. Some times, in the higher notes, Steve Winwood is not in tune, but this is something that just happens to anybody who has the courage to sing in public and try to do his best. This is much better than playback
@a1n2t3o3n2i1o Agree. This is real and I will take it with any and all imperfections any day of the week. I like studio produced music too, but give me live performances over studio anytime.
@S123imon shut up man all u guys says the same thing music is dead todays music is shit, eather get off ur ass and stop being so lazy or change the record man jesus
@S123imon I agree. Fantastic performance, first song of their set and it's totally kick ass! We forget how young most of these guys were at the time and what brilliant natural and seasoned musicians they were for their age. Rockin and Rollin...Buddy would've loved it I'm sure! Thanks...A
It is well known the BF felt the same way... It was their first live performance, all we're quite nervous and all have said it was not a great performance. Clapton said he felt like he let people down with this performcance... Shit Happens and even to the best of them... so overall not that bad or negative of a comment considering how the band actually felt about the performance.
Well, I've seen the newly remastered DVD release of the concert and was totally blown away by the performance. Much better then the studio work... this was ahead of it's time back then. Fantastic. Get the DVD and be prepaired to be blown away.
He sings it nicely, but doesn't know the words right, he messes up words all the time, he's funny like that

Reading this band's history and fate they should never have taken Ginger Baker into it to avoid the increased Cream connections over their heads.

Great remake of the Buddy Holly song. It clearly beats Santana's insipid remake a few years later.

Nah... they would have killed each other - it was a close call as it was... ;-)
Rich Wakeman in Blindfaith, though? That would have been interesting!

Like this version than the one with that jarring electric twang intro that Santana copied for his version.
