The Kalm Report: Art Vlogging as Performance & Critique
By Hrag Vartanian
Then theres James Kalm, his alterego. James makes The Kalm Report, a serialized online video program that has toured the studios of many New York artists (Chris Martin, Phong Bui, Cris Dam, William Powhida), run into people at ...
these are great. really liked these. had a lot of classic intent without being derivative. and yay for self taught artists. fine art is a lot of work. a lot. but let's face it. it's not physics. you can pretty much get there by yourself.
I was going to comment of the layout, in regards to not the best enviroment for viewing the paintings, but I thought I'd let viewers make their own decision, thanks
Spawn sits out here on the prarie where most women rely on kevlar reinforced Wranglers and would look most natural accessorizing with "Farmall" silkscreened up their fronts. We don't have happenings with topless women folk performing bust developing exercises while dressed as cavewomen. Corn festivals rule the social calendar with the smell of sweet potato rendering in the air. I wake up in cold sweats fearing this state will swing to McCain.
new york is a fancy corn festival filled with expensive wranglers disguised in the latest denim trends covering the dirt on our knees. our happenings are illusions designed to mystify our notions of history, that aren't here anymore. i wake up in cold sweats fearing new york doesn't exist.
You guys are lucky, Ive had insomnia since 9/11/01. NY is indigo, but I hope the people who were fraternizing and giving big tips to the wait staff and management at the Hanoi Hilton dont get to run things.
Much of his work reminded me of the LP cover of Mountain's "Nantucket Sleighride." I believe that Mr. Johanson's color sense derives from the genius of using recycled paint and the collective efforts of thousands of women painting their kitchens and bedrooms nice aubergines. I do miss seams on nylons -- mostly because of the continual effort to keep them straight. God bless us all. Everyone. Thanks, thanks, thanks.
Wow. Great show and artist interview. Did Deitch expand the space? I don't recall it being so big, and the Chelsea-like window out front. Thank you James. As usual wonderful. Best-
james kalm, I think you should check out the show that opens sept. 19th at Proteus Gowanus Gallery between 6-8 pm, at Union & Nevins streets, in the gowanus area of BKLYN. Called "MEND". Alot going on there during the past year or so...

i agree, there are times when "a whole lot going on" does work, in this case its too much in too small an area.

spawn,
I thought you'd enjoy that detail (stocking seams). It was, after all, a "space temple" and we each can worship in our own ways.
jameskalm 3 years ago
Yeah, I saw that too, that was very nice of you to record that for Spawn.

This isn't the original Grand Street space, it's the project space around the corner on Wooster street. It's HUGE.
jameskalm 3 years ago
That explains everything. I'm only allowed to wander a block off Canal Street as my daughter shops.
