I went to the Nationals in 06, came all the way from AZ, it was a great time, it was the year Schats won. I'm a Kinser fan and would love to see him one more Nationals. It was the same size as Manzy in AZ and many have compared Knoxville to Manzy, but the record was like 15.25 at Manzy and in the 14's here. Knoxville is a big 1/2 mile. They closed manzy down so the closest 1/2 now is in Vegas, they say it's a 1/2 mile, but it's not. Only a few 1/2 miles left, seems they don't build them now.
At 36 I have not missed a nationals for 30 years. We always stay just outside the track in a motor home and without question there is nothing like the sound (echo) of qualifying at Knoxville.
You are right on it being the King and it is Knoxville, but it is not the nationals. The haulers are not allowed to stay in the infield during the nationals. My bet is that it is a WOO show at Knoxville. The stands would be fuller too. I have been there for the nationals many times.

It was Nationals...Thursday, August 9th, 2007. Steve ended up being 10th fastest that night with his 15.016.
The haulers were in the pit that night, as the rains from Wednesday left the staging area a wet muddy mess. The Friday show had the haulers outside.
Most of the fans who sit down low are not seated yet during qualifying. Steve was the 13th car to take his time trial, so it was stil early.
More and more empty seats each year I attend concern me.
