My heart is breaking right now and I'm finding myself going back to the old Gospels/hymns I heard and learned as a small child, from my Mama when we still lived in East Tennessee, to keep myself propped up. What a beautiful voice, beautiful garden and BEAUTIFUL song.
It is an honor to hear from a descendent of the person who wrote this song. Today is Good Friday 4/22/2011 and I woke up with this song on my heart. It has comforted me to know that when you think that no one is there to be with you… God is
this was my great aunt's favorite religious song, we sang it at her funeral. I miss her a lot, she was like another grandmother to me, especially because her sister (my paternal grandmother) died 4 years before I was born.
It may have been written as a Gospel Song, the lyrics to a large amount of hymns were poems written to Praise God and later found by a composer who put them to music.Later still, they were introduced to various congregations to sing, first AS Gospel Songs,or Christian Songs, then these peoms of Praise put to music became combined into hymn books. So many Gospel Songs like this one of your grandfather's have made it into hymn books, for this I am truly grateful. God's Praise Be Continuous!
I have loved this song since I first heard Elvis sing it when I was a small child. I finally got around to recording it myself a year or so ago. Anyone interested stop by my channel sometime and check out my version.
What a beautiful song.. we had this song sang at my mothers service..I still try to think of her as going to the garden and not having the physical or mental problems that she had and that she was accepted as she was a child of god
This was also my dad's favorite gospel song and God bless him, he tried so hard to sing it. It's been almost 8 years since he passed, and I still miss him. Wonderful song.
I'm a very secular-minded person. This song is one that my mom sang to me often when I was a child. When I was visiting my boyfriend's Hindu family in India this past week, they asked me to sing a song... this was the first one that came to mind as one that represented the pleasant moments of my childhood. I sang it for them (yes, some of the lyrics were totally wrong) and they were also moved.
This was my Grandmother's favorite song. Back in the 40's when it came on radio, I was always told to "Hush up". It was played softly as an organ instrumental background when our 9 year old son died. This is a great version. A real "GRABBER'.
The singer's name is Evie Tornquist-Karlsson, you can see the detail in the Wiki. This song is from her album in 1976, "Evie" . I love this song. I have this album in a cassette. I' from Japan.
@sexywolf - it is sung by Evie Tornquist, I believe on her "Hymns" album from the mid 1970s. She has about a half dozen songs on Youtube, all probably from vinyl albums, so at least you can find her on YT. She was a contemporary of the first Christian rock groups like 2nd Chapter of Acts, that excelled in vocal excellence. I do not believe any of her songs have been converted to digital downloadable. Sometimes you can find "old" albums on eBay that have been converted to CD. I hope this helps.
70 years ago I visited my aunt in a cool small town upstate NY..
She sang this song playing a Victorian parlor organ. I was surprised because all our family is Jewish! Members of the church, knowing her musical skills, asked her to sing and play because the church lacked both soloist and organist..
Last year I thought of my aunt, and the tune and lyrics jogged my memory. Thanks to this medium and its posters, I can relive my aunt's
The believers life is so precious to our Lord, he walks with me and he talks with me. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords cares about me. I have a song in my heart because of Jesus. He tells me that I am his own. Praise the Lord.
My Great-Grandfather wrote this piece. C. Austin Miles. It's actually a gospel song, not a hymn, as some think. It was written in a dark, dingy basement that leaked and had no windows, on a rainy day. I guess that says a lot about his sincere beliefs.
I had to sing it at my dad's memeorial. You just have to disassociate yourself with the personal aspect of why you're singing it. I didn't realize until I finished all 3 verses that everyone else, especially my siblings, were sobbing.
I was so fortunate to see this comment. How wonderful to meet you. I could either give a eulogy about my mom or sing but couldn't do both...so i chose to sing..it ..my mom and her mom where always praying in the garden...I sang it and the same thing happened...everyone was moved...God bless you and your family for such a lovely Spirit breathed song!
i like when it's sang as gospel song..God bless your great-grand father and your family..this song moves everybody's heart...this is one of my favorites...
your grandfather doesnt deserve the parise he gets for thsi song, he deserves far more. it really is a moving songm and everytime i hear it i think of my late great-grandomther, who passed away this winter. i miss her, and i regret not haveing spent more time with her
Wow. That's amazing. You must be proud, because this is one of the most beautiful, spiritual pieces ever written. What is the true difference between a hymn and a gospel song?
@bigredsoprano, My Grandfather loved this song, and though he rapidly declined from Alzheimer's in the end, the one thing he never forgot were his favorite gospel songs & hymns. We sang a number of songs, but this particular song stood out because he would always weep when we got to the chorus, and he didn't know why. That said, it was a song he never grew tired of singing, and it was the song playing when he took his final breath, and left this world for the Garden of Heaven.
@bigredsoprano - thank you for sharing your story about this song and your Great Grandfather who wrote it - it's been my favourite for many, many decades. A truly beautiful and uplifting song.
@bigredsoprano Praise God you made it through this. I don't know how I'm going to sing this at my Grandmother's funeral once she goes home to be with the Lord.
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." I'll be leaning on Him that day, and it'll be so comforting knowing that God is there to lean on!
@bigredsoprano I wish I could thank your Great-Grandfather Miles personally for writing one of the most, if not the most, beautiful gospels ever written. And he walks with me and he talks with me were the only words I could remember, my older brother was able to come up with more words and the title. As in my post below, I first heard this before I was 7 years old. We sang it in our church and again at home while my Mama played guitar. And I've always remembered the music. Bless you and yours.
I have searched the net for this song for weeks now....and this is by far the most incredible version I found. Thank you for creating such a powerful emotional healing message and sharing it!
its a wonderful attribute and feelings to meditate ourself listening to this song...it touches me so much deep within...it heals the sadness and forlorn of a wounded soul. i love it!!! clavido
