Why do calculations in your head? Because it teaches you number sense. How many times have I been given the wrong change in stores because the cashiers do what the register tells them, like stupid little robots. They aren't 'filling their heads', they are developing their heads.
@Lamboragon Yeah, totally agree with you! Why use your head when a calculator can do the trick? and tablet pcs and ipad or even smart phones which are easily available can all do this!
I like to feel sexy....knowing someone is watching me ..wanting me...turns me on!BADLY! @mimib1230 i bought one when i was 14 and gave up, im maybe gonna start again because i see 12 year olds adding 5 digit numbers together in their brain in like 5 seconds... amazing.
That's slightly sad that so many confuse mathematics and calculation (usually of simple integer arithmetic)... those kids haven't exactly wasted their childhood on that but they sure could've had better foci of interest, such as learning to code in C++ q: Even so they work like machines on duties that modernly belong to the machines only.
That's not the point man....because their brain becomes more developed, at a younger time...they can do that C++ stuff in their sleep later on..while you have to stay up all night trying to get it.
yeah I agree, once they understand the foundations of maths they will understand any computer language as its all math based.
I want to do this course and I am defently going to get a abacus and learn it 2 hours a day. Though after 13 years old I think forget the asia way of teaching and study in western schools.
Yeah. I agree. I see both sides of this. Mental math does have it's plus's (no pun intended) in other areas (like higher math = engineering). But, if this is the way it really is then, yes, it is kinda misdirected.
why for 4-12. WHat about the teacher who teach at ucmas? Not all of them study at 4-12

But, I still hate their little song.

This has the uncanny ability to make me feel stupid, even though my major is math.

Very interesting. I am going to buy an abacus now. I am fifteen, I wonder how effective it will be if I train. Hm. We will see.
