I'm not certain, but I think this clip may be from their 1972 short film, "Martian Space Party". Its content overlaps with the Firesign Theater album, "Not Insane".
@ECJim3 Yep, It's "Martian Space Party," and it's a mess. (Apparently the people who shot it decided that they could edit better than the 4 or 5 could write and perform.) Still, when it works it's as sublime as anything they ever did.
The Dear Friends radio shows were fueled by blackberry brandy and cheeseballs. The recording studio proper was always approached as a combination of Art and Work.
You took me to elmo combo to meet Proctor & Bergman 'member 71 mybe Hey How"s the Dragon Lady ? Sorry about Big Dan. I dinna really know him but I was always scared when he banged on the floor onna counna causa the bong. Here's one for u and the Romper.
I'm always astonished to see how many comments are no more than quotes from the well-crafted canon of Firesign Theatre. You can't top their words with something so plain as praise.
You see those giant LPs and giant 8-tracks hanging in the background? I put those up there. My claim to fame has come back to haunt me on the internet, apparently. I still wonder who has those props at home right now. Do you think SOMEBODY kept them? Proctor, perhaps. I was one of the Grass Roots helpers/hangers-on who helped set up the show for broadcast. What an amazing day that was!! Great film, too.
@charterloungeparty Cool story! Never met anyone who knew these guys. So the real question: how much weed did these guys smoke??? I imagine them to be like the Grateful Dead of comedy. In fact I've never listened to them straight. Peace, baby, groovy and out.
@smpaudio Back in the Old Days, there was a LOT of weed going on, although in later years, around the end of the 70s it disappeared. It certainly influenced them during their Columbia Records period. But as we found out with the Beatles, the weed won't make you creative, you have to be that way on your own. These guys can still write and perform as well as they ever did.
Hot damn! Put on this wide belt and work shirt and tell it like it was! Gimmie that gee-tar.....and pussycats to eat them when the sun goes down. Yee-haa. That's America!!!!!
