  • This video is a favorite on Taiwan

  • This video went viral on Mali

  • Hey I was considering doing this song for solo and ensemble; do you think you still have the arrangement for this?

  • @lilsmithy14 Yes, I'm pretty shure, that I have it.

  • Kick ass :X

  • love y music regards from cyprus henrick osbern (see also youtube)

  • beauty sliding selena

  • Great performance. I'm going to "favorite" it.

BTW, I am always amused when I see a jazz concert performed in a church. Because time was when jazz was banned from the church due to its seedy beginnings (jazz - not the church - well, um...maybe I got that reversed - heh heh...)

  • love this! I posted a video of our band in Fredonia in video response

    - check it out :)

  • What do you do when your true love leaves you for another? Dixie and Bill are still friends- she works for the FBI and her son was planning to go where it all began- LAKELAND, FLORIDA- SOUTHEASTERN BRIDAL SCHOOL..not real name- just nickname

  • very very strange

  • Super

  • bass sax is awesome!!

  • Who's the grumpy old sod at the back?

  • Double bass player!

  • @Widmerpool99 Doublebassplayers are usually grumpy old sod's, aren't they?

  • @14echo I disagree about the grumpy old sod. I'm a doublebassplayer and I'm not old (just grumpy)

  • amazing!

  • Who is that hiding behing in the background?

  • Muito Bom!!!! VERY GOOD. I love the walking bass line. I'm going to subscribe to your channel!

  • Yes!!!! Groovy!!! 5* :-)

  • There are more "cracks" in their playing than there are "crackers" on stage

  • super but contrabass sax is more amazing)))

  • @denissoff116 The only reason it's more amazing is the SIZE of the thing. I got a chance once upon a time to handle one of those things and I can think of NO practical value or use for them exept as an oddity or curio. The bass is about the largest thing that mortal men can handle and make it sound right. imho.

  • @denissoff116 I disagree. Contrabass Sax is in the unusual freak show category. Baritone is awesome, and actually playable :p

  • One of my special favourites of your music!!! I played SGB when I was young on the bass of our bluesharp trio ;-)

Hi Lielian - nice to see you!

Viel Erfolg und alles Gute auch im neuen Jahr

    und fröhliche Grüße aus Tirol

    Günter

    ;-)

  • Absolutely love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • un clàssic del jazz..... la dolça bruna georgia... escoltate-la...almenys un avegada

  • ...un classico del jazz...la dolce giorgia la bruna...

    ...ascoltatela...almeno una volta...

  • Gracie!

    Bert Brandsma

  • Why not just use a Tuba?

  • Since there are no tuba players around that can play this opening cadenza.

  • Pretty cool for a Dixieland band.

  • cuz contra sax is amazing..... well any sax is a mazing period

  • Comment removed

  • That's a Bass Saxophone.

  • @Morahman7vnNo2 Tubas don't have the right timbre.

  • Fantastic::)

  • One time i saw a contra bass sax. It needed some wheels, that long it was.

  • Comment removed

  • how did you develop such lung capacity. I play bari and have to breath every two measures.

  • It also has to do with the mouthpiece. If you chooce a mpc with large tip opening you need to give much air. Point one is that I have a small tip opening on a vintage 1920 mouthpiece and point two that the Conn 14M can be seen as one of the best bass saxes ever build.

The larger tip openings usually give a more modern direct sound, but I am kind of oldfashioned I guess, prefer the sweeter sounds from players like Hodges on alto and Ben Webster on tenor. (His ballads esp.)

  • also is there not a technique similar to brass that allows you to store air in the pocket of your cheeks?

  • I wish I could get my hands on a bass sax easier today. They are hard to find and usually so expensive. I would buy one in a heartbeat if I could find a good deal on one.

  • the tone of that bass sax is a joy to behold, just wish there was more, such a rare instrument to hear!

  • That's why we uploaded so many bass sax videos. The instrument is too much neglected. We have certainly 100 videos with bass sax now.

  • Hoping he is going to Birmingham this year, after the boogie woogie festival, want to go just to hear this wonderful instrument!

  • It's great when you all finally got into it but why start with trumpet warm-ups?

  • I agree, when Lielian smiles, its like a light has been switched on!

  • I keep listening to and watching your videos over and over. It is a shame that Koos Greven doesn't do more solos and that Lielian Tan is often so far back and doesn't get to do solos too.

  • Koos doesn't like to play solos, he rather sings. Lielian is just shortest with the band and kind of had to earn more solo space. She will get it soon!

  • i hate this song i have to learn how to play it in like a month on the trumpet ITS HARD!!!!!!

  • In the end, when you have managed to learn it, you will start to love it!

Lots of succes and thanks for watching,

    Bert Brandsma

  • Finally, a version with the right tempo and feel. Most of them play it too fast.

So where is the bajo solo? We banjo pickers are always left out. Vega Deluxe 1925

  • Hi Merlyn,

Our banjo player is a bit shy about soloing, he only does one on Canal Street blues.

He prefers to be a rhythm man, keep the train going as he says it.

  • HEY!...where's the clarinet? A dixieland jazz band without a clarinet?...BLASPHEMY! The Dixie Jazz gods frown upon you, lol.

  • Haha, if you look very carefull, you can see my clarinet in the stand with my alto sax at the left of me playing bass.

So at least the clarinet is physicly there!

Can't play them both at the same time, sorry I know I'm a loser, haha.

    Thanks for watching,

    BB

  • Holy crap ..what a large horn you have ....

  • I used to play the bass sax until I got tired of blowing on things...

  • Lovely long intro on the bassax, do you know Italian Orsi?

    Selena does very well too

  • Once I had the opportunity to play a few notes on a Orsi contrabass sax, but I don't have enough money to buy one.

  • Love the sounds you extract from that bass sax, really exciting instrument to hear, wish the sound quality was better for full effect

  • Bravo Bravo, really good band and bass, how big is the reed?, piece of plywood??

  • Usually a surfing longboard.......

  • surfing board... holy crap lol

  • P.S.

Rollini was a genius, I totally agree!

Also, Frank Trumbauer on C-Melody sax...

They played their instruments better than anyone else.

  • Did you fellas ever record this tune?

  • Yes, Sweet georgia Brown is available on our CD : the Caribbean Suite , recorded in 2004.

It is also a bass sax feature there.

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • @ABrandsma Hey trumpet player, a little bit too much bebop sneaking through. Better clean that up!!

  • really nice but it'd be better if the drummer played a combination of a second line feel and swing for the head

  • haha dutch people. sweet. i forgot how much europeans love jazz

  • no. go home

  • nice playin there.

as a trumpet player myself all i can do is bow down to that playing... good work !

  • Wow I was so suprpirsed to see this happening outside AMERICA! Woooooow! Cool!

  • We simply studied those great USA jazz records!

    Thanks for listening,

    Bert Brandsma

  • Love dixieland! One question though. Why do the Dutch seem to like it so much? Besides Americans and a very few brits all the rest of the dixieland bands I've seen are dutch.

  • In other countries in Europe there are dixie bands as well. Two differences might be : 1. There are many bands in this country because it is possible to earn some money with this music here. Not that you rich but it attracts musicians to this style.

    2. In the Netherlands we have very good internet connections. We live at sealevel, no mountains, so it's very easy to get all kinds of cables through the ground. So it is easy for us to upload a lot of things.

    Thanks for watching,

    Bert Brandsma

  • really great

  • Yes I know that recording. Highpoints in the careers of both Bix and Adrian Rollini.

  • Awesome! Bravissimo! Congratulations from Brasil! ;)

  • Thanks for the compliment. Greetings back from Holland.

    Bert B

  • BB op de bassax zoals Jan morks op de klarinet, GEWELDIG!!

  • I LIKE THIS ONE VERRYYY GOOOD thanxx :]

  • EXCELENTE!!! SIN PALABRAS ESTA INTERPRETACION DE Sweet Georgia Brown !! es casi original!! los felicito asi fueron sus acordes

  • Gracias por escuchar y los elogios. Atentamente,

    Bert Brandsma

  • Cool! Only thing is where's the clarinet?!?!?! Every Dixieland jazz band needs a clarinet! Ahh oh well. I liked it anyways. :)

  • If you look very close, you'll be able to see the clarinet in the stand, next to the alto sax. The clarinet player doubles on all reeds and had a feature for his bass sax in this one. There are other videos from this concert where the double bass is playing and the clarinet is used.

    Thanks for watching,

    BB

  • True dat! :) clarinets are essential!

  • Great interpretation, I love the Bass Sax (in French saxophone baryton).

do you happen to play in Belgium ?

Mensen, dit is schitterend. I vind U prachtig !!!

  • We will play in Belgium November 21. 2008.

The place is called : Halle.

    groetjes,

    Willy

  • Hallo Willy,

Het is inderdaad Halle nabij Brussel.

De tijden zijn van 21.00 - 00.00 uur.

    Groeten,

    Bert

  • no in French saxophone basse :)

  • Stop listening to amateurs! Come to Chicago and hear the real pros!

  • I don't know if you are trying to insult me with the amateur remark, but Chicago has thus far been to poor to pay me. They hired me to play in New York City, San Francisco, Tampa and New Orleans.........

  • Wow! What a fantastic Dixieland band! You guys are awesome! And that's some of the absolute best bass sax I've ever heard. I've had the pleasure of playing with bass sax a couple of times. It's an amazing and beautiful instrument.

  • tomorrow you gonna borrow your bassax to me!!! lol

  • It would be "lend" instead of "borrow", but I know what you mean... Bert is as amazing wind instrument player as well as an inspiration to all of us wind players...

  • yes it's lend... or something... but I played a little bit his bassax! That's the truth! Thanks!

  • I listen your music in Poland. I have been a many times in Holland near Groningen. Where is possible to listen you in concert? I'm very sorry about my english. Gewoj

  • Our website : dixielandcrackerjacksDOTcom has a calander with all definite bookings.

We have Jazz festivals in Portugal, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Germany this year.

Besides a regular contract at a fun Park in Slagharen during summer. 5 days a week, not on mondays and fridays.

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • Come to Canada!

  • They really should tour more internationally, they should visit the UK as well!

  • We really would love to. I did try to contact several jazz clubs and festivals in Canada, but to my regret nobody replied.

To the guy from the UK I have better news, we will play at the Birmingham Jazz Festival July 4. till 6.

  • i am your fan!

  • Thank you again!

  • the Bass Saxophone is such a beautiful instrument, just listening to it is great

  • It certainly is. A pity that it is so neglected. Only Bernstein used it in the original score and film version of West Side Story, but it was dropped when the Orchestral version came out. Probably they feared there were not basssax players available everywhere in the world.

  • This is awesome! So much better than my own version! Great! :-)

  • Truly wonderful!

  • Thanks Manon, I saw the videos where you play trumpet and sing. Great! There are too few women who play this music, so I was delighted.

    Kind regards,

    Bert

  • Man, I LOVE the bass sax! Great playing. Thank you!

  • brilliant!

  • really great

  • Thanks for listening!

  • wich bass did u play in this video? the Conn or the Martin?

  • This is the Conn, the opening cadenza goes till high F, I can play it on the Martin with altissimo, but that's much harder.

    Thanks.

  • oh i see. do you have a favorite between the two?

  • Not really, moneywise the Conn has a bigger value. The name Conn alone with the rolled toneholes and the fact that it is keyed till high F have a part in that.

The Martin however, also plays fine.

  • ähm ? Dixieland ?

  • I guess the best description would be :

    Classic Jazz or Dixieland.

The opening bass sax cadenza is less typical for the genre, but the use of bass sax certainly is.

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • First time I've seen a Bass Saxophone

    Vriendelijke groeten,

    Bert Brandsma

  • I watched this video many times and I enjoy it immensely! I did not know what a bass sax was until I saw this video.

  • The funny thing is that the first saxophone ever built, was a bass saxophone. It's really a pity that they never became better known.

    Thanks for watching and commenting,

    Bert Brandsma

  • You do a great job with the Bass Sax!

  • we speelden dit nummer altijd met mijn opa. Op gitaar en ukelele. Maar dit klinkt echt waanzinnig! Ben benieuwd hoe jullie in het echt klinken. Mooi hoor!

  • Holy shizz! My Tenor Saxophone teacher sent me a link to take a look at this too see how amazing the playing was..

And I must say, it is wicked! Though I play Tenor, which is quite different from Bass, I must say it was inspiring.

  • Thanks for listening, please also say thanks to your teacher, it is a great pleasure to hear that even in Australia people are enjoying our music videos.

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • To tell the truth, I actually live in Canada.

Where might you have gotten Australia from? Haha, anyhow, that doesn't matter.

I'm intrigued now at your style now, so I'm off to watch a few more videos before doing homework.

Hope you continue to make wonderful videos such as this!

  • Oh, I'm sorry, in your account is written that you are in Australia, but anyway Canada is far away enough. In September, Bob Erwig who lives in Canada as well came by to hear the band play in Holland.

In the first months till March I won't play bass sax much, more alto and tenor I guess. Maybe I'll upload some of that or some older bass sax stuff.

  • Ah, well I wasn't really paying much mind to my account details when I made this one (as I wont be uploading any of my videos until my next concert) - sorry 'bout that!

However, the band played beyond excellent!

    -continued-

  • By the way, was that vibrato I heard on the Bass Sax solo in the beginning? I'm still rather excited when I hear the stuff, seeing as I'm trying to get the hang of how do to it on Tenor - any tips for that?

I'd love to hear some more of your Tenor stuff, just to see what you do with it..

  • Vibrato can be achieved a variety of ways, but the two most common are lip vibrato and breath vibrato. With lip vibrato, you slightly loosen and tighten your bottom lip, which slightly lowers and raises the pitch. For breath vibrato, you exhale slightly faster and slower (I flexed my abs in rhythm to achieve this 'til I got the hang of it). Breath vibrato effects volume instead of pitch. Both ways are "right", and both have their strengths and weaknesses. Good luck, and keep practicing! :)

  • Where can I purchase your CD's in Canada.

  • Alas the regular CD shops are not yet interested in our CD's. However they can be ordered directly with us. We ship them worldwide. Please contact our Email address, dixieorkest@hotmail dot com

  • holy crap a guy who can actually play bass sax... that's AMAZING... i've tried it, it's hard as f*** to play it well

  • One of the most difficult things about playing bass sax, is (besides tranportation!) is to find a good horn. Not too many basses were ever made, so there is not much knowledge how it should be done. I tested 25 before buying this one. On most of the others this would have been impossible.

    Thanks for watching!

  • dam the bass sax sounds like just a gitar doing the scales

  • This guy is awesome and does the bass justice. I bet this guy plays a mean bari sax considering how easily he rocks the bass.

  • If I can see correctly, and I can, he is playing the baritone sax...

  • Read the description. "Bert Brandsma preaching the bass-saxophone in Sweet Georgia Brown." Besides it should be obvious by the sheer size of the sax that it is a Bsss, not a Bari.

  • =P I guess it serves me right for commenting at 5 in the morning...

    My mistake --

On topic: Great playing on everyone's part!

  • Very nice video. Thanks for posting.

  • Ah! Where is the clariphone? Otherwise very nice.

  • There are a clarinet and a altosax waiting in the stand, if you look closely.

Alas, I'm not able to play them at the same time when I play bass sax. Sorry, I'm not that far!

  • Freaking AWESOME!! I own a bass sax and I am totally green with envy. I have to go practice now!!

  • It was not really the purpose of this video to make people envious. However, we hope that you enjoy our little films and would be glad if it helps to make more people enthousiastic for bass saxophone. We really need more bass saxophonists!

    Kind regards,

    Bert B

  • Georgia brown is my name

    O_O

  • Well, my name is Bert Brandsma. Nice to meet the subject of this song in person.

  • Brilliant

  • Very nice!!! Beautiful bass sax!!

  • Best bass sax solo on Youtube.

Conn made the greatest bass saxes ever, great to hear them in this shape.

Nice to hear those two girls play this type of music.

  • you guys are nice!!! love that tune and love that bass saxophone solo!

  • Well Done! Thanks for the music.

  • These guys were the Beatles of the 1880's. Thanks for posting this, it's really good music.

  • Thanks for the nice words and compliments! But..... 1880's.....? We are not THAT old, hahaha

    Kind regards, Bert Brandsma

  • Sorry; meant to say as big THEN as the Beatles NOW. Wait, that's not right either. Well, IF you guys were around THEN, okay? Thanks for some good music at any rate.

  • Sounds great but this guy could probably blow up hot water bottles without even trying. Some lungs!

  • Five stars for the superb bass sax solo! Maybe next time the video camera can give some close-up shots, especially of the two gals in the band. Selena is a top trombonist.

  • Very good, I'm impressed.

  • I play the Bari Sax, which is really bad ass and tough to play with speed and finese, so i can really appreciate the bass sax solo. Nice work

  • very nice solos by everyone for that matter!

  • Wow! very very impressive.

  • That's nice for them, but we are talking about real SAXOPHONE playing here.

This is the best bass-sax solo on Youtube!

  • After searching many hours, I never found a better bass-sax solo on Youtube. This one is the best!

  • Go to MySpace - Adrian Rollini, you will hear him with Bix Beiderbecke, Joe Venuti and others.

  • Why bother? This man outplays every bass saxophonist, even Rollini!

  • I wish I had the possibillity to hear rhis man play live. Don't you ever play in the United Kingdom?

  • This is beyond category.

  • That one is also nice, but this is definitly the best.

    Very impressive opening cadanza.

  • Well, the solo on Big Butter is also pretty virtuosic.

  • I guess this is the best bass-saxophone solo on the entire Youtube site.

  • Wonderful,wonderful.

  • Never heard the basssax played so well. You are worldchampion!!!

  • Such a shame honestly that the bass is nearly obsolete :( such a hearty and deep sound, especially with that roaring 20's kinda swing :)

  • HI Bert, Great Sound! Coos fits in nicely! Good idea to put the Bass saxophone in the spotlights. Keep on doing that! Best Wishes. Jasper

  • the world is small, isn´t it ?

  • With phenomenons like youtube it rapidly gets smaller and smaller. Thank you for watching.

    Kind regards, Bert Brandsma
