I just got censored out when I tried to post a comment about the new Jenny Craig ad featuring Mariah Carey very sexualized, part by part, not as a whole woman. The description of the ad was that it shared Jenny's view of promoting healthy habits in women. Disagreed and got censored.
I don't think that people choose not to watch films written by a female writer because they are "scared of women". I don't think people are particularly scared of women in the first place, much less base their entertainment choices around them. I mean, there's very few female comedians as well. It has nothing to do with sexism and "men trying to keep the women out". It has to do with more people buying tickets to see men then women.
If your wife were to cut your penis off, the world would laugh. That is how little women value men, while still demanding more and more of their hard-earned resources.
Where are the sources for these statistics? Also, at least in America, winner takes all, no matter the sex. If most winners in media are men, tough shit, ladies.
These stats may be true but we live in a meritocracy, right? The best product will win. What I dislike about this video is the passive aggressive tone. "I will not be afraid of women." That's passive aggressive, yes?
@kinggilgamesh76 gosh, just go away. simple minded people like you have nothing better to do than to make asinine comments on thoughtful videos as these.
@kinggilgamesh76 and another thing, i know you dont even mean that because you wouldnt dream to say this in front of your mother or girl friend. why put on this facade for the internet? because its a fad?
Men go overseas and get their limbs blown off just so you can live in complete comfort, and you still talk shit about them. Why shouldn't I be disgusted with you?
What I found interesting is that no one seems to look at the Fox News Network. They have more women on-air than any of the other networks. Their program hosts are women and they always have experts on that are women. I think they are ignored because of the bias against the network, yet they are doing a better job of hiring women than any of the other networks. They are highly educated and knowledgeable, not just talking heads.
I think it is kind of interesting how they didn't mention the relative proportion of male and female antagonists. Or how men are portrayed in sitcoms. Or how the media constantly portrays men as evil monsters.
Furthermore no one is afraid of women. The media constantly portrays women as saints and men as devils.
I think it is also interesting that instead of focusing on real social problems(like how most homeless and crime victims are male) they focus on this trivia.
The issue of gender relations in media is one that concerns all of us. If you mention that 27% of xyz is women, you say that 73% percent are men, and that says something about the media and why things are the way they are too. Women and men live in this world together. We have to figure this -out- together. Saying that there's still something odd about at what proportions we produce media between the genders isn't making any threats to men. So why should anyone be afraid? ;3
@VisualAsterisk I only thought that it was slightly disingenuous to only list ways in which women are "discriminated" against and not the ones men are in the same area.
Women and men live in this world together. We have to figure this -out- together.
Saying that there's still something odd about at what proportions we produce media between the genders isn't making any threats to women. So why should anyone be afraid? ;3
Yeah that's the whole idea, it's not wrong to bring up a problem when you see one! But to say we should never point out anything at the risk of leaving something out is less successful than both providing our observations and allow them to provide meaningful context to each other. This is why I don't think "they should have spent their effort on issue x" is always a viable complaint. It's more effective to incorporate all kinds of meaningful observations and opinions.
@VisualAsterisk But we should incorporate them these problems not ignore them. Which is what this video does. They are making it seem as though women are the only ones who are discriminated against in this area when that is truly not the case. I have a problem with that because it is purposely misleading people about gender inequities.
Maybe if they were not being purposely disingenuous I wouldn't have a problem with it.
I think there's no core disagreement here besides the idea that women's issues can never be talked about without the inclusion of men's issues, which should be self-evidently ridiculous, because an observation of women's situation goes hand in hand with an observation of their male counterparts.
What specific messages would you have liked to see in the short film?
@VisualAsterisk I do not think that women's issues can never be talked about without men's issues. That is a lie and ridiculous if you think about it. However, I feel that when men and women have the same or similar issues it is disingenuous to only focus on one. Which is my problem with this video.
I think this is an opportunity for me to learn something; what same/similar issues would you like to talk about?
But in caution; this is something I see happen a lot with discussions of social issues. They set the topic of conversation here, which they have the right to do. "Let's talk about minority group X" "NO LET'S TALK ABOUT Y" isn't always a helpful way to enter somebody else's conversation, because that kind of derailment can go on forever.
@VisualAsterisk Just do some basic research about how men are treated in advertising, tv and movies. But I was not trying to say "Let's talk about Y." I was trying to say that it is disingenuous to talk about X when Y is faced with similar(and possibly even worse) issues without even mentioning that such issues exist.
But I do agree that it is important to not get into an oppression olympics that feminists so like.
Like Politics, Women are underrepresented in movies/culture and the lack of respect and pornification of our girls and women today is the direct result of the dominance of the Male Perspective. It's like a metastisizing cancer in our society and unless Women rise up for Democracy as they recently did in Cairo, Women will be second-class citizens forever....
John Lennon's famous 1970 song: "WOMAN IS THE NIGGER OF THE WORLD" needs to be heard today! [Yoko Ono wrote the lyrics, of course!]
"The Kids are Alright" and the phenom performance of the great Annette Bening won the best pic /actor at the Golden Globes and the great "Winter's Bone" won acclaim for its unflinching portrait of a young girl fighting for her family.

captainpanic08 sez: "If I was a news network and wanted to interview a qualified individual about a subject, I'd go for the most qualified one available.
Well yeah, that's (part of) the point! How does one become "qualified"? Who decides what that means? I don't feel "tokenized" by hearing more women's voices in the institutions that shape and reflect our culture."
Unfortunately this isn't that new or shocking, if you've been around long enough, not that much changes for women. captainpanic 08, how would you define sexism if not in numbers. The qualified argument has been around forever and has been keeping women, people of color and other "minorities" out of academic disciplines, school curriculum, poltics, arts and most areas of human activity for a long time.
Whilst I am absolutely opposed to the under-representation of women in the media, some of these aren't issues with the media itself. If I was a news network and wanted to interview a qualified individual about a subject, I'd go for the most qualified one available. These statistics are presented without any context, which is okay in itself, but the inclusion of some of them seems to imply that a tokenistic approach should be taken.
I absolutely think that men and women should have equal footing in the media, but it's a little presumptuous to suggest that based on Oscar nominations and wins that the film media is sexist.
Thank you, Women's Media Center, and Progressive Girls Voices journalists - this is a concise, beautiful resource that conveys vital, shocking, infuriating information. Anyone who sees this will never think of media the same way again - and that's a good, world changing thing.
