Wonder, legend, and archetype; the immortal edifice in a city full of marvels. Chef d'oeuvre of Roman engineering genius. Exquisite filmmaking with perfection in musical accompaniment selection. Must return. My compliments.
Amazing building, there in 2008. A good tip, Katherine from Angel tours was brilliant. They take no more than 11/12 per group and are so very informative.
ok.....what about restoring the corinthian capitals? how about placing a replica of the sculpture that was in the pediment? back in place? Lightweight materials could be used to prevent damage. Put back copies of the sculptures on top of the pediment and restore the outside of the drum. I don't think that would be too instrusive - would it?
Around 645 AD - the call came out to "remove the pagan filth" from the pantheon. In doing so they removed the balance of the building. A large number of classical sculptures would have been destroyed at this point and all guilding and precious metals would have been ripped out and melted down.
Mistakenly; awful 1808 "restoration" removed what they believed to be "medieval" marble interiors on the upper cella. They weren't!! They were the originals from antiquity. idiots. Original panel remain
scultpures would have adorned and balanced the portico which now looks too high. Winged figures and chariots would have been placed on top of the pediment and the surrounding drum was surrounded by decoration and pillasters. The dome was covered in bronze (I'm not kidding); which was stolen by a pope. The pediment contained sculpture of what they believe was an enormous cast iron eagle and motifs.
The entrance door was covered in GOLD. As were the ceiling coffers inside. Amazing. And more.

what I find frustrating - is I can't find how much of the interior is exactly original from the ancient world and how much is from medieval.
Any information would be very much appreciated. Obviously the tombs are medieval but what about the columns?
