Allen Ludden was definitely a decent human being. He was a hard worker. He never cheated on his first wife (the mother of his three kids) nor on Betty White. (Both of his marriages were successful.) You never heard about him being on drugs or alcohol or getting in trouble with the law. He even kept his cool when George Peppard ranted and raved about the networks supervising the game shows.
I agree with a lot of you. TV today needs more Allen Luddens, Gene Rayburns, Tom Kennedys, and so forth.
Oh I see GameShowFreak2007. But Gene Rayburn will always be known as Mr. Match Game; just like Allen Ludden will always be known as Mr. Password. Nobody can fill the shoes of these two great wonderful and talented men; including Ricki Lake.
Today's game show hosts don't match up the great ones. I mean, Look at Drew Carey. He's more of a stand-up comedian than a game show host. He doesn't have the charm, the personality, and charisma that Bob Barker had..
And Ricki Lake hosting a revival of Match Game a few years ago on GSN. Gene Rayburn was probably turning in his grave. Nobody can fill Gene Rayburn's shoes.
Unfortunately, he didn't last long on there. His cancer came back. He was in the hospital and he fell into a coma. (I heard that he had a stroke.) But anyway, he was just to sick to continue hosting Password. Therefore, Tom Kennedy took over for the remainder of the show's run.
All of the game show hosts of the past;( Allen Ludden, Gene Rayburn, Bob Barker, Bill Cullen, Monty Hall, Tom Kennedy, Jack Narz, etc.) all had class and very wonderful personalities. These were game show hosts.
The Password is "Tribute," as in what this comment directed towards Allen Ludden is. Great emcee, and a class act. Still missed 30 years later (can't believe it's been that long already).
Class acts like Bill Cullen & Allen Ludden sadly do not seem to be in our midst any longer. Any good classic hosts do not seem to be on anymore. Thank goodness for videotape, so we can still see these "friends" from time to time. The world was better for having fine gentlemen like this, and now so too is Heaven.
@wdm1219 EXACTLY. Now everyone looks for celebrity hosts...look at Million Dollar Money Drop, Price is Right, Deal or No Deal, 1 vs 100, etc. We need more Tom Kennedys, Allen Luddens, and especially Bill Cullens. WONDERFUL folks.
I have this show at home but I am so glad you have posted this. Allen Ludden was such a wonderful host as well as a decent human being. His kind no longer cross the air waves. Thank you, Mr. Ludden for everything.
And sadly, we also lost Bill Cullen to cancer back in July of 1990.

elisamiceli1981: I agree with you. I don't watch GSN anymore for the same reason. Too many new game shows and not enough of the classics.

MyDylan500: I really don't know. I didn't see this episode. I'm sorry.

@nanlisa just to clarify, Ricki Lake only hosted match game 1 day as part of CBS' game show marathon.

How was Allen Ludden related to Bill Cullen?
tpir1972 1 year ago
@tpir1972 He wasn't. Bill Cullen was brother-in-law to Jack Narz and his brother Tom Kennedy.

@wdm1219 Happily, Tom Kennedy (brother-in-law to Bill Cullen) is still alive.

I believe the reason Mr. Ludden was absent during the show was because he was undergoing surgery, if I am not mistaken.

The answer to the first puzzle on Allen's return is a game show that is currently hosted by Wayne Brady.
