1. When the artist was signed they were making music that the label wanted
2. The artist stopped making that kind of music
3. The label feels that the new style is hurting sales
In that case, the label has every right to protect their investment.
On the other hand, if the artist is making music that the label doesn't want in the first place, they can sign with somebody else.
