  • i dont even attempt it if he acknowledges its difficulty

  • pause it at 2:30

  • Are* not ate. :/

  • "I guess i should practice that one a little more" No Rusty, you messed up intentionally to try and make us believe you ate human. Not today, sir! Lol... i seriously hate to love this guy. He is a phenominal player, no doubt. But man, i wish he was a little more... modest. Btw, after i saw this video, i threw my guitar off of my roof in frustration.

  • I hate this guy

  • mixolydian one at the end totally makes me think of gershwin's rhapsody in blue

  • this guy always "smacks" when he talks

  • has he any sons? when did he find time to make em'?

  • Thank you so much.. I have tried picking as fast as you did and i have just cut my string

  • 8string?

i have a hardtime seeing the specific frets for these shapes with ihs lightning speed, if anyone knows them and could send them to me thatd be relaly cool

  • 8string?

  • Now it important for you to pay attention to this technique. 1 second passes. did you get that? lol

  • Warp Speed at 5:14

  • His faces on the B Phrygian dominant example was pure epic!

  • Regardless of the pointless debate, I love rusty and his music and I definitely need to practice more to get anywhere close to that plane of playing.

  • how many of you actually tried to learn the licks instead of bitching?

  • double chin status

  • Playing slow bluesy licks with a big wobbly vibrato then switching to fast shred argeggios to me is what 99% of players think is 'feel'. Personally i think the only 'shredder' that feels it is Steve Vai. Thats my opinion.

  • @00sven00sven00 Olympic by paul gilbert, altitudes by jason becker. Those two songs should open up another 10 guitar players to you over the next few years.

Most get stuck in the vai satriani bubble and think that's as good as guitar gets, there's so much more out there :)

  • @00sven00sven00 fuck steve vai

  • @93thrasher Gosh i would if i could! Which guitarist would like to sleep with?

  • @00sven00sven00 well since you like steve vai so much, youve prolly seen the video where hes playing with some blonde chick, so I'll take her.

  • @93thrasher Ive changed my mind!! Im doing her first!!!

  • @00sven00sven00 fuck that you can get seconds

  • Number one, I see a lot of dumbasses didn't take a look at the description, and number two, it took me 10 times wathing ylthis video to fathom how ones hands could move so fast.

  • this is a lesson idiots so ofcourse there would be no feel since its an exercise not a musical piece...

  • can you demo this with clean tone guitar? Just curious to see what it sounds like clean instead of overkill distortion and reverb.

  • 4:25

  • "emotion" and "feeling" are for those with little theoretical knowledge of music beyond the pentatonic scale. this is the general consensus, because, generally, people don't know shit about music.

  • @SWAGassNIGGA Eh you cannot be a true master of your instrument with no feel or emotion connecting you and your sound. However Cooleys on a more advanced level of guitar so he doesn't show his feel more that he shows his virtuosic talent instead. Which is fine because even in his slower parts you can see he has a good vibrato/bend. However this is the case for 90% of shredders these days. Just look people up on youtube.. A lot of people suck. you've gotta have balance :p

  • @SWAGassNIGGA whoa hold on there man. i agree all this "feeling" bullshit about shredders is fucking retarded. but being a music major, ill say that the feeling/emotion thing still has to be there, or else whats the point of all the theory? cus theory is just a way to better express whatever it is your trying to express in music. at the same time though, ill agree htat everyone hating on this dude, yngwie, etc. probably is just a shitty musician and would feel better if they didnt suck at guitar

  • @93thrasher it still has to be there?

It was NEVER there. Emotion is subjective.

Some people get emotional over a big mac, doesn't make it emotional.

You realise that your saying music you write should be to everyone's emotional taste simultaneously?

Fuck that, make music you enjoy alone and fuck the haters. There will always be haters and fans so never try to please.

  • @johnaiton uhhh dude read much? thats not what i said at all. Now, go back, and try to read my comment again before you say anything else dumb.

  • @SWAGassNIGGA May I correct: you've just proven you know shit about music yourself. Luckily, there are guys out there who have chops AND "feeling". Unfortunately, Rusty isn't one of them. As for you, I strongly doubt you've got one or the other.

  • @LOLPombaer If you happened to be so inferential as to read between the lines, i was implying that the general populace doesn't know enough about music or listening to it to comprehend emotion out of anything beyond intermediate blues playing; not that music should be void of emotional substance. Reference my previous comment if you wish, as I made no claims towards Rusty Cooley's emotional value in his playing, or my own playing ability. Read before "correcting" next time.

  • @SWAGassNIGGA and if a person can put both into their playing they become god

  • @Theshamham I take it You ARE one of the six retards that didnt like this vid huh?

  • @6stringedkillah FUCK YOUR ASS BALLS DICK FUCK FUCK SHIT GOD DAMNIT I LOVE METALHEADS SO MUCH. RUSTEY COOLDICK IS MY MANNN. btw i love you.

  • @Theshamham people can hide a lot about themselves with online alias's but i strongly suspect Theshamham is an american........ purely based on the scale of his retardation displayed in this comment!

  • Is this from Basic Training?

  • the only thing that gyps me about this guy is he apparently studied theory but will profess to play say "E phrygian" or a mode when he is unacompanied SO CARNT BE A MODE!!! arhhh winds me up

  • @dobsonone please explain.

  • So rusty, do you like guitars?

  • What these illustrate is technical exercises. Take what is taught and work it into your techniques and then compose music of your own and input them so they add to your songs and not just sound like useless rambling.

  • Fuck, I would do almost ANYTHING to have those skills!!!

  • @maliceheart18 Ikr?

  • so....pick like hell hehe

  • Comment removed

  • @WeveGotNoTimeToLose It's advanced video. You have eyes idiot.

  • Comment removed

  • @WeveGotNoTimeToLose Well then go and find video that has what do you want. End of story.

  • @WeveGotNoTimeToLose he plays it slowly enough that you can figure it out by watching. unless you're blind

  • @WeveGotNoTimeToLose Well... He says it's in harmonic minor, and he says the groupings. If you don't know even basic theory, you need to learn that before learning anything from this will even be remotely usable. It's a note grouping lesson, not a scale lesson :P

  • @WeveGotNoTimeToLose,

If you're incapable of learning from this man who "couldn't teach a dog to shit," then why would you even want the TABS?

Just move-on to another video (by a different teacher/player) who wouldn't mind holding your hand...errr...uhmmm...handing-over their TAB to you for each drill/motif - LOL!

  • im 50,001 viewer

  • Gilbert evolution? (y)

  • Gilbert evolution?

  • I think that just like 000,1 percent of the viewers actually take the time to learn the licks, or try to. this videos are just eye entertainment.

  • he must be a pro at fingering his girlfriend

  • @pimphatandcoat she probably comes to fast :P

  • i think he finds all the scales he can that sound like old nintendo games in fast forward 1000x items faster than normal speed.

  • the phrase "he has no feeling" is a phrase that was invented by people who don't like shredding that sounds cooler than "waaaahh i dont like this".

Every guitar player feels his music. Just because he doesnt feel like you do doesn't mean he doesn't feel.

  • wow you're really sensitive when it comes feel and emotion, or critcism of shredding because of different solo preferences.

  • He does show emotion... It's just different. Without emotions, he would be dead. Rustey Cooley is one of the best guitarists out there. Emotion in music is relevant, different for everyone, so that bullcrap "he has no emotion," is completely stupid.

  • @TraceurT besides he teach here..so ..it's no place for performance or emotion guitar..

  • Ahh! Rusty you sure got the technique down but you bore the hell out of me.What i would like to see though are these licks put into a solo, over a rhythm and the real challenge would be to make them stand out as if there absence would make you fell that the song couldn't stand alone without them.Sleep on it.

  • Wheres the feeling and emotion?!?!?! JK, lol

  • he looks funny playing his guitars cause their just about bigger than him ha ha

  • he looks funny playin his guitars cause their just about bigger than him lol

  • its all about the feel whichever feels right economy or alt its watever feels natural.. buts its mandatory u know how to do both

  • I'm pretty sure economy/ alternate picking is a matter of personal preference. I can't alternate pick to save my life, but i can use economy picking just as well or better than some of the guys i know who have been playing longer than me. But then watch gilbert or any of those other guys they burn there guitars with alt. picking. In the end its up to you.

  • it must be fun to be him

  • u are a god

  • my english is really bad, please tell me something...when i touch G A B individual notes i use fingers 1 3 4...is this correct?? please answer me, i´ll thank you

  • @Pierre84able

you can use 134 or 124 or even 123, there is no right or wrong way, its all down to what feels more comfortable

  • @ibanezxiphos700 thank you very much man!...now i know,great!!...good luck.

  • does he have tabs somewhere? so we can look over the exact notes to learn it slow? :D

  • Its a technique video not a "lets play a song with emotion"

  • 4:26 - 4:34 = best face ever.

  • this isnt really a technique lesson. he's really just loosely teaching some scales

  • même aprés lavage intensif de cerveau cela reste toujours moche.

  • Why the hell people are whining about feel or emotion? This is a friggin technique video..

  • All of these examples sound so kick ass until he speeds them up to superhuman impossible speed! Haha I think he just likes to show off.

  • theres a point to where playing too fast stops sounding good. believe me, i am all about shred, but this guy is too much. I like to see him play some good sounding stuff. I hate the sound of seven string guitars too. That octave if B is too low for my tastes.

  • Not to knock Rusty, he's an awesome guitarist - but does any one else think he kinda plays the same shit all the time? I do.

  • PARA LONGE OU PARA PERTO.....FAZ UM 21

  • I can probably play this at 50% the speed. Which is still fucking fast.

  • Comment removed

  • @Seagerash why does every jazz/funk player tries to bash on metal? seriously wtf, can hardly hear what he's playing? check your ears man, and you're bashing on his guitar position? holy crap you talk like you know every possible thing about music on your channel but apparently you don't even know that's te position classical guitar players are taught to use, if you don't like metal, don't come bashing mr poser troll

  • @Seagerash Then dont watch this vid ;D Hes like the Chuck Norris of Shredding.

  • @Seagerash You're really ridiculing the way he holds his guitar? Really? As for the overdrive part, I can hear what he's playing just fine, I'm not really sure what your problem is.

  • wow that's A harmonic minor? i must be doing it wrong because it sounds nothing like that when i play it haha.

  • Example nr 1 sounds like Yngwie :S

  • shit, that is some fast playing... badass

  • IBANEZ!

  • anyone know where i can get tabs, preferably the Am pentatonic one?

  • Dick Ass Scale!! LMAO!!!

    (B Phrygian)

  • thats not a harmonic minor

  • HAHAHAHA, the sheet paper is a joke, just there to be there lol.

  • @Six2wo It's Tablature paper, all the licks he planned for the magazine article are there for reference in case he forgets which was next to play

  • @johnaiton i know, i was only picking at him.

  • This guy is amazing. I hate it when people say that there's not emotion, I mean, do you really think all he does is just play super faster (faster than you), NO! Pretty much all shredders can play the emotional stuff too. And besides, isn't it a little impressive that this guy can play at lightning speeds while still staying in the correct key and mode?

  • does anybody know which of his instructional DVDs this is from?

  • @LarsBauer74 none of them. It's from a magazine called guitar techniques

  • @johnaiton Ok, Thanks! Does that magazine come with a DVD?

  • Rusty is the man ! His playing is incredible!

  • still fucked by this lol

  • @rockSldBrute It's between Marshall Harrison and Shawn lane ;)

  • Comment removed

  • the only thing for sure i know about rusty is that when it comes to speed and skill, he's not bullshitting

  • Haha! I love the video description "PLEASE - NO bulshitting about feel or emotion" - Yeah really that "where is the feeling and emotion" thing is becoming some sort of a plauge

  • dude! you play awesome!

  • He's one god damn good counter

    And like unearthly guitar

  • hahaha, lets see if I cant get it to sound better, flash bastard. I wish I had that sort of dedication

  • @ilrs I think it's over there..

    *points*

No wait, that's you getting blocked.

  • lol

  • @atreides444

You will always be able to block people.

But your penis will never get bigger.

  • @ExtremeBogom Wikipedia - erection. Told cannon fired.

  • @atreides444

    lol OK then.

  • como se hace lo del minuto 5:22 ???

  • the lick at 7:12 what the fuck this man truely is some kind of god

  • l like how hes like that wasnt good enough il blow evverybodys mind and do it again and make it even better

  • I like how he has to rein in his guitar after each lick, like it's a wild horse or something ... whoa thar!

  • at 5:21....that was sick it sounded like a fucking teradactile

  • lol this nigga scares the shit outta me hes a guitar god

  • so, pick like hell

  • grosooooooooooooooooooooo tremendo!!!!

  • no feel or emotion lol jk this guy is amazing and super helpful :D

  • lol noob....

  • Which dvd is this/where does one buy?

  • u r just too good

  • What do you think that he can ''hit'' on the metronome?I'd say 16th notes at 260-270bpm

  • Haha, "And this isnt a traditional A minor penatonic lick in any way shape or form."

Made me lol irl a little.

  • 3:49 LEGATO MAGIC!

  • rusty never fails to melt my face

    and devistate my brain.

    fuck yes!

  • 5:22 HOLY FUCKING SHIT!. that was the coolest sound ive ever heard.

  • uhh it was just a harmonic with the whammy bar

  • that legato section sounded so cool

  • its funny cause he tries to play slow, but he eventually goes like, fuk this, and just starts playing faster when hes supposed to be playing slow. haha, rusty is awesome like that

  • Ah man, this is a great video. The very first bit is great for guitarists such as myself that are just now seriously getting into lead guitar such as legato and sweeping, that really helps making scaler runs sound melodic and not so robotic as it would with a more basic rhythm.

  • The Harmonic Minor is the coolest scale in the world.

  • Phyrigian dominant is pretty rape, too. Of course becuase it's a variant of Harmonic Minor.

  • @Dark515Rogue hell to the fuckin yes,

  • Lol when he's playing the legato section he still moves his picking hand along with the notes like he's picking them in his head.

  • Moving the picking hand whilst still playing legato is to mute unfretted strings.

  • Ah, ohk I understand now.

  • wow very different, I never heard this kind of playing before in the last 25 years, My hats off to ya there fellow..!!!

  • lets be serious 95% of guitar players are nowhere near being able to play that stuff haha therefore...this isnt much of a lesson but more of a "oooooo....ahhhhhh"

  • LoL, I agree xDD

  • we'll you could play it slowly...?

  • If you were able to play to this level already then it really isn't a lesson.

Truth is, even the most developed players will have no technique in areas they have never played before.

Masterful players who can play nearly anything will be equally as powerless as a beginner when they move to new things.

Ask a god of alternate picking to play economy and watch them not even hit a note right.

If a lesson doesn't truly challenge you then it's more of an inspiration instead.

    SO PRACTICE!

    ;)

  • I totally agree. PG is an exception to that though!

  • Yeah, like, I can pick fast like Rusty and sweep or whatever (not as fast of course(YET!), synchronization of both hands is the hardest part of that style) but if you were to tell me to play a funk blues rhythm I'd have some trouble cause I never practice that style. Or even within the style I AM used to, I can alternate pick just fine, but I can barely economy pick. Damn, I guess I need to practice a lot more...

  • You should put a lot of effort into economy, it ca really open up your mind and give you time to invent your own new licks since it's such an untouched way of playing

  • @johnaiton in what way is economy even an uncommon way of playing, unless you're a complete freak you need economy to play even medium-fast.

  • @dmcgraye It's just the truth man

People like to learn bits and pieces of economy but it really clashes with the way they're taught to play and nearly all give economy up after a month or so.

And economy isn't needed to play fast, this video shows that. It's all straight tech stuff.

Quite honestly, if you need to use economy as a function for speed then your technique is already malnourished

  • I agree that economy picking is not needed for raw speed, but it can facilitate smoothness of picking.

So economy is useful in strict sequences like arppeggios, but you sure as hell cannot improvise with it.

The only way to increase speed in real terms is to conquer legato, since it removes the need to pick entire groups of notes and also creates a very smooth texture in lead lines.

But again it depends on the sound you want, i prefer the raw bite of picking for the most part.

  • @digitised You can have real economy in improvisation, all you have to do is learn note compensation so that you can economy pick lines with even notes of numbers as well as odd.

Shawn Lane did it with a single pulldown, Marshall Harrison uses hybrid picking compensation, 'rescuing the pick'

  • what exactly do you mean by rescuing the pick? and also the single pulldown lol

  • @bcrich

If you play an upstroke and have to play a note on the string down from it next, you can use your finger to pick the first note on the next string.

The pick upstrokes and your finger pulls up, the motion of the pick upstroking actually makes a lot of the finger movement, it's incredibly economical.

This buys your pick time and decreases difficulty, it also changes the number of notes on the next string so you can correctly keep economy picking.

The pulldown is an economy pull-off.

  • @digitised

of course it's possible to improvise using economy picking.

  • @gitarmats not really unless you have prepared licks of the same style that you would be "improvising", actually playing completely new stuff with economy picking is pretty impossible

  • @TASGuitar7

    Let's agree to disagree then.

  • @digitised

economy picking is used quite a bit in fusion....

  • @digitised

look up frank gambale, you will see the error of your ways :P

everything he does is basically economy or sweep picked

  • @digitised tell that to Frank Gambale

  • @digitised That's total BS. I am a strict economy picker and I don't find it any harder to improvise. I just learned to pick by economy, it comes naturally to me.

  • I like the brain fart at 4:05 ish, "Eight... Notes" He seems to have to shake those words from his head lmao.

  • i dont understand why people bitch that hes fast least he shows what hes playing and people are just jealous that they cant play like this this guy inspires me to play like this and i believe its possible with time an effort and of course belief

  • I wonder how many notes he just packed in from 1:50-1:54...insane how fast he is
