If these had been 'fast breeder Thorium reactors' nothing would have happened to the reactors during this disaster.

Thorium reactors can use the cheaper, more available Thorium instead of Uranium and they cannot go critical or melt down. There is very little waste either, as this type of reactor can burn the waste too...oh yeah, the little bit of waste that is left over, is radioactive for just 10's of years, instead of 1000's of years with the type everyone's using now.

Very strange reports coming out of this disaster. Some said the backup diesels ran for an hour and then shut down. Why? Damage to the fuel storage or to the lube oil or cooling systems? There is going to be a lot of review of the design of backup systems at nuclear plants when this is over.....
