  • I think I just acheived enlightenment.

  • ここから全て、始まった。

  • FLCL

  • 2:07 is that staryu or am I just being crazy?

  • The only twilight I can stand.

  • good times......I WASN'T EVEN BORNwwww

  • @shibuyaXshibuya Yes,... the 80's. I feel sorry for all those who missed it.

  • >sdf1 with harlocks ship and the yamato as arms.

    FUCK YEAR

  • Ah good ol' 80's anime fanservice, back when the girls weren't all still in grade school.

  • @Malrune

    Amen brother.

  • I have no idea what I just witnessed, but it very well may have been the best thing ever to happen.

  • I really find these old graphics charming and beautiful. Maybe it's because I first fell in love with Japanese animation by watching Robotech on Toonami, but something about it is just uplifting. It seemed to be able to genuinely portray different tones without becoming over-bearing or tiring. Maybe I just can't get through the nostalgia, but it's a comforting feeling to be wrapped in.

  • I spent my teenage days in Japan through 80's to 90' ,

when a lot of great animation works were published .

AKIRA , Nausica , Royal Space Force , Nadia , Gundam series , DB , City Hunter ...

Now I can't help feeling lucky to experience

the golden ages of Japanese animation in the same period...

  • What is the name of the robot in 1:51?

  • @MrGatoChile

That's the "vehicle/car version of "Voltron".

  • BELIEVE IN YOUR DREAMS, CHILDREN

YOURS WILL BE THE DRILL THAT PIERCES THE HEAVENS

  • So, in this video we clearly see the point of Gainax - it's FUCKING AWESOME AND IT PWNS EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE. FOREVER.

  • Is this awesome? I think it is, but I need conformation from a third party.

  • ...........AND THAT'S HOW EQUESTRIA WAS MADE!

  • What's the chicken head in a plexiglass box mean?

  • "Just on the border of your waking mind,

    There lies another time,

Where darkness and light are one,

And as you tread the halls of sanity,

You feel so glad to be unable to go beyond.

I have a message from another time."

28 years later, through time, the message reaches me.

  • I wept manly tears of joy

  • HERE COMES CHAR!!!

    ...

    There went Char...

  • A playboy bunny in a lightsaber duel with Darth Vader.

Your argument will forever be invalid.

  • my god. this animation is so amazing.

  • This video is the father of japanese anime today.

  • @ukokyun48 Milestone, maybe. In America, anyway, Japanese cartoons became anime with Robotech. Or maybe Starblazers....

  • @kristell9 Yes,milestone,not "father". You're right.

  • Same opening that Densha Otoko

  • Animation quality was mostly shit in the 80s. I don't know why people are talking about this short, technical showcase, like it was the norm back then. If what you like is the blurry VHS look, you can run the new anime through a filter, o transcode it to 50 MB low res realmedia video.

  • @sacrisesma

I don't believe you understand the value of hand drawn animation. Computer animation fails in comparision with hand drawn animators. Computers can never copy the same emotions as a human.

It completely overfathoms my mind how animators can make every motion so organic like there is life in them. When I see computer animated anime I just want to throw up, everything about the story, char, scenes, screen play execution, acting is just so horribly done. Fucking fanservice everywhere.

  • I can't make out most of the characters but in the scene with the two robots holding flags, the little one is from the scifi movie silent running.

  • To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. Things change dude, deal with it, enjoy the memories, and realize you're making new ones.

  • Looks pretty neat.

  • When I was a child, this was exactly the kind of media I was exposed to, that I fell in love with. Fun Sci-Fi, with gratuitous giant robots and monsters, space planes and fighters, random bunny girls and great animation and acting.

I grew up on Star Wars, Star Trek, Gundam, Outlaw Star, and everything you can think of with the same feel. My childhood, though a decade later, was filled with this video. I can't imagine where everyone that work on this has gone. Where is my Sci-Fi? Where?

  • why would Optimus Prime attack her? also could you plz post a list of all the anime seen in this video? some looks really good and I dont know what they are, I wish to watch them.

  • why would Optimus Prime attack her?

  • As a lover of both anime and ELO, this is one of the most awesome things ever.

  • Now I finally know what FLCL was referencing when Haruko was flying around on her Guitar in a red bunny outfit :D

  • The video is somewhat incomprehensible unless you lived through 1983 and still remember what that year was about, geopolitically.

  • @arsoys

    Or unless you're a sci-fi/ anime/ history nerd. *cough*

  • @arsoys

Year of my birth. Yet I still recognise a lot of nerdy stuff, granted most are obvious, but some not quite so.

  • fuckin cool!! :))

  • 1:12 = best part

  • That means that at this time, japanese wanted to rivalise with american cartoons. I'm sure it's that !

  • Whow man, I just discovred this thanks to densha otoko's opening, i wanted to know where that came from, and I can't believe I didn't know this awesome animation made so many years ago when gainax was an indie animation group, this is awesome man, I feel nostalgy even when this is my first time watching this, I also know now that the end of the chapter 5 (or 4) of FURI KURI when Haruko is dressed as a bunny girl and defeats the enemy is a tribute of this animation! thanks for upoading this jewel

  • Weeabo fags always complaining

  • The world became lazy and greedy. Money money

    Doomsday close)

The Evangelion theme will be opened:P

  • これを見て当時衝撃を受けて僕はこの業界に入ろうと思ったってくらいこの動画に刺激をうけた。

    庵野監督が学生の頃命を燃やして頑張ってるなという凄みをすごく感じた

  • 2:05 Since when was Angry birds created?

  • Dang that's a sweet cross-over, getting a serious nerd-nostalgia boner.

  • This is like Disney's Fantasia for hardcore geeks

  • Having been an ELO fan all my life, I just now learned the significance of the song within the anime community. Chills.

  • ни фига себе ! 0___________0

  • dynarobo!

  • Did I just see Daleks?

  • Wouldn't expect anything less from a company that grew up to be Gainax.

  • @HeartlessAngel78 Not just Gainax but,Studio Ghibli ,Studio A.P.P.P. ,Studio Nue,AIC ,Toei Animation etc. and so many that no longer exist.

  • @HeartlessAngel78 this was the work of gainax?

  • Why did the 80's ever have to end...? ;_;

  • @RabiesBunny why did anime have to become so mainstream?

  • I saw SunVulcan!

  • ....This has to be one of the most epically awesome videos I have ever seen. Showcasing both american and japanese science fiction and blending them in a humorous and awseome way in a collision of cultures that showcase everything in our dreams.............AWESOME!!! :D

  • I'd never seen this before, but the animation in this is beautiful!

  • Every so often I come back to this video and the robotic voiceover at the start gives me goosebumbs.

  • SO MANY THINGS HAPPENING IN THIS! <3

  • no he visto la serie pero el tema is cool...

  • 4 billion dollars if you can name every last cameo in this video.

  • end of childhood.

  • this is and historic video for anime

  • LOVE this freaken song

  • so many wins in this vid.. from the phallic radish to the bunny girl

  • Man if only i was there at the convention that featured this they even gave out a limited amount of lazer disk copys. can you imagine how much thats worth now?

  • @Haku351 err laser lol

  • One word describes this video: Epic. <33 A shame that 27 people sneezed right as they were about to click the like button and hit the dislike button D:

  • @ThePirateMD You have a limitation.

  • @ThePirateMD nothing looks as good as real hand drawn cells. quality 80s animation is awesome

  • @fattytheking but modern 2D animation that uses computers is also "hand-drawn" - they tend to draw out the keyframes on paper and then draw over them with a tablet. it's not like computers drew the cells in Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt or Tatami Galaxy.

  • @ThePirateMD I assume you only watch funimation anime

  • @ThePirateMD No, it was the recession Japan's economy suffered when the bubble burst combined with the rise of Internet piracy driving down DVD sales that forced animation studios to cut their budgets. Besides, old anime suffered from QUALITY just as much as the new ones do. Does anyone here remember the WIDE Gundam?

  • @ThePirateMD Yes it did, I believe all of this was hand drawn.

  • @ThePirateMD I know, they just dont make them like they used to

  • @fattytheking the only bad thing that computer use led to is cheap looking out-of-place 3D CG. there's nothing particularly wrong with modern anime; if you actually paid attention to (good) new shows/movies instead of assuming that everything made in recent years must suck you'd find tons of stuff to enjoy, but I guess being optimistic and positive on the internet is bad

most shows from the 80s were... not half as good looking as this.

  • @ThePirateMD It's because people used to put effort into making art.

  • @ThePirateMD eh? High quality modern stuff is much better. You could be mistaken by comparing majority low budget crap.

  • @ThePirateMD Finally seen someone other than myself say this. Exactly..

  • @ThePirateMD

I would say it has less to do with the computer-aided animation techniques and more to do with the over-saturation of dribbling, mindless options available in the anime world today, coupled with an ever-increasing demand for visual quality and cleanliness. Now the last guy to graduate from animation school can get a job drawing "Magical Schoolgirl for Middle-Aged Hikokomori #3687", and because there is a demand for this for some reason, it will be cleaned up in a computer and sold.

  • @ThePirateMD

For example: look at the growing trend of re-making or creating new animes in an OVA format. The animation quality is extremely high, and the production company sinking that kind of money into the anime generally takes the time to produce a good story and procure good voice actors as well. Look at Hellsing Ultimate, Unicorn Gundam, or Rebuild of Evangelion. They all rely heavily on computer-aided animation, and they look phenomenal.

  • @TotemoOishii whoa, whoa, whoa.. hey now. rebuild of eva does not look phenomenal. it looks completely mediocre. It has terrible 3d cg/animation, and not so great hand drawn animation. if you look at the original series, there are many instances where the original has better animation than the new movie.

  • @ThePirateMD

That and the desire to see young girls wearing nearly nothing.

Yeah, I miss the days of classic anime. It LOOKED better, I think. I liked the grainy look.

  • @ThePirateMD Space Thunder Kids. That is my response to that.

  • @ThePirateMD

it's quantity vs quality, series are being mass-produced nowadays

  • @ThePirateMD TV is all about finding a formula that works and then churning out the cheapest possible example, because once you've made one good episode of one good show, people will keep tuning in. It's like Cartoon Networks Adult Swim.

  • @ThePirateMD A computer can never be as smooth as a human drawn line.

Being imperfect has it's positive things.

  • @ThePirateMD I don't actually fault the programs more like the companies that push out trivial franchises based on a decent hit or two. Just stick a popular name on it and push out whatever as fast as you can given the aid of the new technology. I have seen computer's actually "aid" as they were meant to , but they have become far and few between. Put the blame where it belongs on those who push out trivial bs for the sake of money. Not for the sake of art and a good story.

  • @ThePirateMD

To be honest, I really wish this was a series, and this was the opening, but no. It has to be a video for a sci-fi convention *AND THIS ONE HAS COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS AND STAR WARS >:O* and no, Even though

The creators of this grew up to be Gainax, they still will never have a series like the amazement of the 4 minutes and 23 seconds i've seen today.

  • @ThePirateMD no this was all hand drawn

  • @ThePirateMD Before 1990 Quality > Quantity

    After 1990 Quality < Quantity

  • The most awesome thing man has ever packed into the span of 5 minutes. 27 people missed the like button.

  • 27 People don't know a good thing if it came up and frenched them in the park.

  • I remember back in 05 some gigantic nerd faggot tried to sell me a vhs of this for like 70 bucks saying "I'll never find it anywhere." BRB INTERNET

  • Electric Light Orchestra is awesome.

  • This is not an amv, the guys made this themselves.

  • @uwontprevail

It's still an AMV because it uses anime for a music video. Whether it's original animation or not doesn't matter. Even a-m-v.org agrees.

  • Those were the days.

  • I shiver everytime the robotic voice talks as the music starts

  • @Phlebas99 I want to hear Carl Sagan reading that.

  • i lovr this Anima

  • the 26 ppl who disliked this are a bunch of fags :P.

  • The word EPIC was made of this video.

  • Best music video Evar!

  • Gainax knows how to release your geek!

  • I like these Daicon videos. It's like a time capsule, since the scenes or shows that were put into these videos were the popular ones of the time.

  • Oh my God they did it. They finally did it. Video = Epic Fail. Song = Epic Win.

  • nothing less than SUGOOOIIIII

  • goosebumps every time

  • The song's halfway catchy, but it's not nearly as interesting as watching people's reactions to watching it. Hee.

  • insanely awesome

  • And just a few short years later...they produced Royal Space Force-Wings of Honneamise. =)

  • @pheenix42 yea they made the entire film in a room no bigger then a college dorm room and its still one of the best films of all time.

  • The ffffffuuuuuuuuu-?!

    XD

  • i love it since it comprises everything great about the 80's

  • The animation tends to vary here. A lot of it's decent, and entertaining, but it goes to End of Evangelion levels (and items) around the end.

  • a classic!

  • This was such a cool work of anime for its time.

  • SOOOPAAH GIAAANT BUNNY NINJAAA!!!

  • 3.44 Doraemon?

  • This brings me back to the 80's

  • Wow, I've watch this about 20times now!

  • yea.... This brings tears to my eyes too

  • A fucking genius made this video.

  • This animation was made by the guys that nowadays we know as Gainax (aka the guys who did Evangelion).

  • OMG so full of win oAo""

  • made me cry, it really did.

  • It's a amateur animated music video made for the opening of a sci-fi convention in 1983. The attendees were duly impressed; the animators got enough attention to get funding to open their own animation studio the next year. They released a major feature-length film in '87, then a hit six-episode giant robot OVA series, then a TV series on NHK. They even dabbled in computer games.

Oh, and some weird series from '95-'96 that nobody cares about.

  • @IZEASGT

some guys in dorm rooms --> one of the most respected anime studios in history

  • "Weird Series from '95-'96 that nobody cares about"? That sir is Blasphemy

  • wat

  • got to love bedroom projects XD

  • its great when my completely seperate interests in music and anime collide.

    :)

  • La cancion me encanta, esta muy buena

  • I wanted to watch this before but I never made the time for it and plain forgot about it, that is until my friend reminded me about it. I'm glad I watched this yeah, very insprational yeah. And uhh, does anyone know what song this is?

  • Electric Light Orchestra - Twilight

    You're Welcome :D

  • yes, is super sentai

  • I just love that 80's anime look. Has so much more character to it.

  • This is an epic celebration of everything we geeks/nerds love, this was clearly a labor of love by Mr Anno and his compadres.

  • this is like awsome for it beng made in 1983

  • back when anime was good

  • lol she elbowed a z-gok how do you even do that XD

  • the admiral is a retard

  • did they even have power rangers before 1983???

    3:44

  • Yeah, since the mid 70s as the Super Sentai shows.

  • 才能をもった人間が根性までもつと恐ろしいな笑

  • This video makes me feel nostalgic of stuff I wasn't even born for! >:O

  • daicon 3 and 4 pwns all this so epic

  • aw this is soo cool im only 13 never heard of this saw it on this guys profile, man i wish i lived back in the day :D

  • Damn, this is pretty impressive for 1983!

  • Keep in mind that many popular Disney movies you may have seen were created in the 80s, 70s, even 60s and before. Animation and film can be surprisingly good fairly into the past. This has often confounded my attempts to guess when a film was made, heh.

  • now now....it' 1983, it' amatorial project and it's GAINAX history.

  • Its like witnessing supernova... epic...

  • The only Twilight I can stand...

  • @Phlebas99 amen brotha!!!!

  • @Phlebas99 AMEN to that!!

  • Is this how Gainax got it's start? I distinctly remember Haruko wearing that bunny outfit in FLCL :D
