@akademonmusic, they do in certain aspects, but there are more customization options for designers, just take a look at what I did with my channel design (NOT a self-promotion, just giving an example), you couldn't really do that with the old channels.

For those of you who have just tried using the beta version of the "new" channel layout, the link does not work anymore because the new channel design is out of beta and it is what all YouTube users have now. Obviously, keeping a working link to a beta version of the same channel layout is stupid - so YouTube deactivated it.
