I completely agree with you and had a similar reaction myself when I heard Harper say that it wasn't an issue on the minds of most Canadians. Torture is wrong and brushing it off as unimportant is even worse.
observation all iam saying is that if torture is needed and benifit's us then use it i am not saying jump to that right away . It is not by upholding our principles it is doing what we need to do and not having the politically correct crowd monitor everything they do and when they make a good move they are critisised and demoralised and shit on if one of our soldiers beat's up an afgan terrorist oh well.
If it benifit's and provides saftey and predicatability ofr our men and women then fine do what you need to do ...america needs to sort this out and bring everyone home and stay there for a very long time and rebuild there country she is in taters and i am worried as a canadian i am worried for america she is our best friend and one of our biggest allies probly of convieninence but still i sleep well at night knowing she is there and not say china,or russia or iran or somalia,or syria,.
First of all i hope and pray for a safe return of your family memebers serving and yes all other soldiers fighting the good fight around the world.
my nation is not my world it is my country i live in and by that being good right and just other nations will follow or they should ....i also understand your point ..just like serbia clintonistas bombed the good guy's they wanted there land back and they were being tortured by the very people they showed hospitality to and kindness to .
Well i am glad that you care and if it bothers you so much about others that is fine but just know that by taking the moral high ground these people are winning and i am sorry to disagree with you but if we start using mild forms of torture to get information and to indimidate these people we might get somewhere. We are making progress but it is overshadowed with this kind of political shit should we shouldn't we ,did we or didn't we. let our men and womne do what they need to do .
Again, there are other ways of getting information from detainees. What you are saying right now is jibberish. Where is your proof that torture is the ONLY way? Where is your proof that by up holding our principals they are winning the war? Where is your cold hard evidence, other then simply making the statement your self?
It is the way your sounding ,it is like you hate our soldiers you don't support them and again right bakc to my first point i don't care if the "other guy's" are roughed up abit ..we are making this a politically correct war and becasue of it we are losing ..and i say let our boy's do what they need to do to win this war. and america had nothing to do with it ...they paid the other govornment's for oil and so on and those govornemnts kept it from there people period.hoe is that americas fault.
America has a policy of supporting or over throwing governments to suit its own purposes. It was prefectly okay with helping to overthrow the democratically elected Mosadeq government in Iran in the 50's and installing the Shah (one of the most brutal dictators of the last half century). And they continue to active prop up the Saudi government (which has little difference from the Taliban), actively providing money to squash domestic descent.
And as to the other points. I support the side of justice, which no government seems to represent anymore. "My nation is the world, my religion, to do good." -Thomas Paine
So basically my definition of terrorism stated below...as well if you want to call our soldiers terrorists go ahead your a real piece of work man well then please tell me what violence isn't unlawful explain that to me libtard we are not there to make friends we are backing our allies who were first attacked by terroists and retaliated in defence to overthrow a brutal govornment that DID condone torture on it's own people. do you think we should have just not done anyhting and let them continue
Well you see the 9/11 attacks were completely predictable. Foreign and domestic experts had been warning about it for years. And the fact of the matter is that they weren't attacked "first", the attacks were not unprovoked, they resulted from decades of American foreign policy that absoluting desemated the lower classes of the Middle-East, thereby radicalizing them. And overthrowing the Taliban was not even an initial war aim.
what does it matter if i used the word in my definition tell me if you wanna get liek your so smart think of what terror means when you figure that out then you will see what a terrorist means you still dont get it tip toe around your problem ...that being you don't give a rat's ass about our soldiers youo nly care about power and control and finding the next issue to use to get your socialit govonrment into power that is it ...plain and simple you have not made one identifiable point .
Well you have made many assertions here without any proof. One that I am a socialist, two that I don't care about "our" soldiers, and three that I don't know what terrorism is. As we have never met, what makes you think that even one of these is necessarily true?
Also it matters that you used the word you were defining in your definition because it shows very clearly that you are on uneven footing intellectually.
sorry man why don't youm ake your point or move on ...i am willing to continue if you get to a point i can't sit here and listen to your liberal drivel . well please can you correct me then as to what a terrorist is ohhh mighty one?
Again you have assumed that I'm a liberal. But anyway, as you are clearly very important; the US Department of Defense defines terrorism as "The calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological". And a terrorist as someone who practises the above actions.
regardless i have a question for you do you agree with our soldiers being killed at any and every chance and opportunity by these people and if our soldiers are caught they are skinned alive or burned alive or beaten on camera or stabbed and kicked and savagley beaten ...but if we capture one of there people we have to be kind to them or sensitive to there needs ...i am sorry but this is a war and we should be able do treat them how we are treated now if they were kind and nice to our soldiers
I don't agree with our soldiers killing anyone. And the difference is that we are supposed to better than the Taliban, that is the only idea that keeps us from being terrorists. That we are morally correct. But if we act without morality than we have no more legitimacy than the Taliban, save that we are far stronger.
I would say a terrorist is a person or a group of people who uses or advocates terror or terrorism....ie cutting someones head off on camera screaming allah ackbar .
I really don't care about torture these people are TERRORIST'S since when is it o.k. for our soldiers to die and we have to personaly tend to there (the terrorists) well being ? how f-ed up are you people .
No, I have a very solid grounding of what terrorism is. But for this discussion to be of any intellectual value it must begin with this simple question.
and they fed our soldiers and gave us basic human life sustaining needs wwell then i would be o.k. with her stament butn they don't they convert or kill you they slaughter you ..but you my friend have your head so far up the othersides ass you can see the light of day and you do not care how YOUR soldiers are treated so long as they (terrorist) are treated nicley with respect and all of the qualities of a guest in your home should have . have ben trained to spew out
1) I have family in the Canadian military, one in Afghanistan right now. I care very much for our men and women fighting in the war and I wish them all a safe return.
2) I didn't hear the part where I said Terrorist should be treated kindly or as house guest or even with respect, oh ya, cause I didn't. I said they shouldn't be tortured. They are criminals but no human on earth deserves to be tortured. They may not treat us the same but and eye for and eye leaves the world blind.

They were attempting to control an area with 2500 soldiers that the Americans are now allocating 30 000 soldiers to and still saying they're undermanned.

Don't feel too intellectual because you jumped on the "complaint of the day" bandwagon.

Feel free to discuss whatever you want, he was actually wrong about his assertion that treatment of prisoners isn't a part of military conduct, IT IS.
"What the afghans did with their prisoners was likely not on the top of their list of concerns."
It is. It's their freaking JOB, so of course it is on their list of concerns. They have laws and regulations in place on how to do their jobs.
Just as with any job. Just because you are understaffed, doesn't give you an excuse to cook a burger patty for only 10 seconds at your job at McDonald's, for example.
The Geneva Conventions matter, but I really don't think the average person understands the Afghan detainee issue. We picked sides over there, and when we turned over Taliban dudes to their opponents (whose side we chose), some of the Taliban guys got mistreated by their opponents.
That we didn't know this was going to happen before we got there reflects just how dumb our country is for believing we could police a country of people who don't get our laws and behave like cavemen.
torture bahhh i need a job first than i'll worry about it :P lol i hate when shit goes down in other countries and we gotta deal with it "starving kids in Africa" whatta bout the starving kids here?!!?! I agree torture is wrong and we need basic rights but we needa sort our shit out before we worry about other countries. We're not the USA we don't have to be the wannabe UN, AND I DIDN'T VOTE FOR HARPER!! he's a douche bag,
i love the way you make serious subjects understandable and enjoyable to listhen to ^^
governments shouldn't hide facts and stuff "take a break" (only in belgium they have the right to do so since north and south don't get along to well (politics))
We are over there shooting guns and blowing people up, and you are concerned with torture?
Torture happens every day in CANADIAN jails.. prison rape etc.. just because this is going on against prisoners of war somehow now its underhanded and unfair?
I forget, when did I say in the video that torture is awesome and fair if done within Canada? I think its clear I have an over all "torture is lame" policy and I am against war. I am talking about this instance because of proroguing parliament.
Even if the situation wouldn't be different if another party was in power, It doesn't make it right.
I think going over there and blowing people up is the problem. If we throw them in jail and torture them they should be so lucky to have not been blown up.
We are blowing them up .. shooting them.. and people skirt that war issue with a bullshit torture distraction.
"Yah, we are going there shooting guns, but at least lets not torture them in the process?"
Living in afghanistan during a war must be torture in itself
There is only one instance when the use of torture is authorized: Against someone who believes in the use of torture AND ONLY if they believe that the use of torture is somehow useful and is authorized other than as used as an instructive tool that torture is a bad thing, which is the point of only allowing it in this one exception.
I agree young lady. I think however the war on terrorism is too soft on enemy combatants. I condone torture in certain circumstances. Most of the "Civilized Public" are pacifistic idealist who are not aware of the truth about war. It is neither a tea party nor a game of high stakes poker. People are going to get hurt.
You can not prevent people from getting hurt in war. But you can increase your own casualites by not gaining vital information. But I keep forgetting that protecting the rights of terrorist is more important than protecting the lives of innocent civilians or friendly troops.
I love how you assume every single detainee is automatically a)justly imprisoned; b)a terrorist and c)has vital information that can only be retrieved through torture.
I do not in any matter wish this on you or anyone you know or care, but if it does ever happen, it might open your eyes. Hopefully so.
I'm not really into fluffy girly stuff, but your political analysis was very well done. I especialy liked your break up analogy. Sometimes being politically informed isn't so bad, even though most politicians try to make it as borring as possible.
I wish I sent that hate letter back in Elementry School to Harper... but I got in shit for it.. actually like half the class did.. i guess a lot of people don't like the guy XD And y'know we were right LOLZ like seriously... ITS TORTURE. WTF. WTTTTFFFF.
And good to see you're back, by the way. No need to apologize for the content of your video. Being politically engaged and being willing to take some time out from your normally lighthearted approach to talk about serious issues at the peril of losing your more vapid subscribers is admirable.
Harper has consistently shown disregard for democratic conventions since the Conservatives took power, both abroad and in Canada. Proroguing parliament twice in the span of a year is a pretty clear-cut way of telling Canadians that their voice means jack shit and that if the opposition won't keep their mouths shut in the House of Commons he'll just lock the doors so they can't get in. As a dual citizen of the US and Canada Harper reminds me a lot of Bush. He just has better grammar.
Well said, Lune-Dawg. The worrisome part, as you mention, is the indiference and apathy shown by most Canadians. I hope this video helps people to try and gain a broader view of what is happening in our government. Because, should Mr. Harper ever receive a majority, this country will face some scary, scary times.
to be honest, im not much for Canadian politics... actually im not much for politics at all, but i was actually intrigued by your video. you do have a valid point... torture is wrong not matter what anyone says about it. sorry i dont have much more to say on this comment
i dont mind these kind of videos and im from the US. Its kinda cool to hear about other countries, regardless if its its something that wouldnt matter to an outsider.
i normally hate people Vlogging about their political views, and tend to just not watch them. Yet, i'm surprisingly comfortable with this post. You could tell me the worlds on fire, and as long as you were smiling, i wouldnt mind at all. Keep it up.
Christopher White here. Just saw the video on our CAPP wall and I really like it! I actually wrote to my MP for the first time last week, and its good to see other people starting to take notice of the issues. Best of luck!
On a sidenoty, please calibrate the sound a tad better in your next video please? It won't change me watching it, but it will preserve whatever's left of my hearing :)
You a) make awesome videos as the rule; b) posted a nice comment on my page when I suscribed to your channel and c) talk sense about subjects that you don't even like because there is a pressing matter requiring yours and our attention?
Miss Lunerrrrs, I have never once doubted my subscrption to your channel and can only keep giving you 5 stars for every incredible video you post. Thank you for being an active member and showing a good face of Canada :)
Thanks for making this. I agree with you 100%! This has been an issue that's been pissing me off as well.
Yesterday the Liberal leader announced that his party would be showing up to work despite parliament being shutdown and invited the other opposition parties to join him. I think that's a step in the right direction which is encouraging.
I'm glad to see you speak out about this. It's extremely irritating to see so many apathetic people around me here in the US. They don't take even a minimal amount of time to educate themselves on the issues, they just listen to loud mouth pundits and repeat what they have to say. I enjoyed this and no need to apologize for caring.
the thing is, I really understand the apathy, I really do! Its just starting to get ridiculous, and it is so insanely easy now to read up on this stuff.
Oh, you wacky Canadians and your ideas. First, you don't like torturing people. Next, you'll probably talk about something REALLY crazy, like a government-sponsored health care system. You silly Canadians.
hey we care about torture done to dogs in puppy mills... oh that's because people are paid to obtain your name on a piece of paper on ste-catherine street in Montreal...
If they don't agree with the concept of human rights then you don't need them.
I hate the "priority" argument, as if average people aren't able to be concerned about more than one issue at a time. It's such a condescending way to duck responsibility.
In America it's always, "We're not taking action on global warming, torture, or healthcare because people are more concerned about the economy." Don't become us Canada! Where will we flee to?
Maybe you should become politically active. I recommend socialism.

We are over there shooting guns and blowing people up, and you are concerned with torture?
Torture happens every day in CANADIAN jails.. prison rape etc.. just because this is going on against prisoners of war somehow now its underhanded and unfair?
Happydude11 2 years ago
I forget, when did I say in the video that torture is awesome and fair if done within Canada? I think its clear I have an over all "torture is lame" policy and I am against war. I am talking about this instance because of proroguing parliament.
Even if the situation wouldn't be different if another party was in power, It doesn't make it right.
Lunerrrrs 2 years ago
I think going over there and blowing people up is the problem. If we throw them in jail and torture them they should be so lucky to have not been blown up.
We are blowing them up .. shooting them.. and people skirt that war issue with a bullshit torture distraction.
"Yah, we are going there shooting guns, but at least lets not torture them in the process?"
Living in afghanistan during a war must be torture in itself
Happydude11 2 years ago
again "I think its clear I have an over all "torture is lame" policy and I am against war."
Lunerrrrs 2 years ago
You misunderstand Canadian politics, the conservatives are in trouble over this one.. only because they are in power.
The situation would be no different if the Liberals were in power. torture would still continue and this time the others would complain about it.
Happydude11 2 years ago
There is only one instance when the use of torture is authorized: Against someone who believes in the use of torture AND ONLY if they believe that the use of torture is somehow useful and is authorized other than as used as an instructive tool that torture is a bad thing, which is the point of only allowing it in this one exception.

I agree young lady. I think however the war on terrorism is too soft on enemy combatants. I condone torture in certain circumstances. Most of the "Civilized Public" are pacifistic idealist who are not aware of the truth about war. It is neither a tea party nor a game of high stakes poker. People are going to get hurt.
Jazreldedondru 2 years ago
and there are ways to prevent people getting hurt, like, not torturing them? It is just plain wrong and the ends do not justify the means. Ever.
Lunerrrrs 2 years ago
You can not prevent people from getting hurt in war. But you can increase your own casualites by not gaining vital information. But I keep forgetting that protecting the rights of terrorist is more important than protecting the lives of innocent civilians or friendly troops.
Jazreldedondru 2 years ago
there are always other ways to get information
Lunerrrrs 2 years ago
I love how you assume every single detainee is automatically a)justly imprisoned; b)a terrorist and c)has vital information that can only be retrieved through torture.
I do not in any matter wish this on you or anyone you know or care, but if it does ever happen, it might open your eyes. Hopefully so.

I'm not really into fluffy girly stuff, but your political analysis was very well done. I especialy liked your break up analogy. Sometimes being politically informed isn't so bad, even though most politicians try to make it as borring as possible.

T_T dude.
Harper.
Wtf man.
Wtf.

I wish I sent that hate letter back in Elementry School to Harper... but I got in shit for it.. actually like half the class did.. i guess a lot of people don't like the guy XD And y'know we were right LOLZ like seriously... ITS TORTURE. WTF. WTTTTFFFF.

hahaha yaaa sorry about that! I'm not sure why that happened :S

NyBob85 2 years ago 3
Well said, Lune-Dawg. The worrisome part, as you mention, is the indiference and apathy shown by most Canadians. I hope this video helps people to try and gain a broader view of what is happening in our government. Because, should Mr. Harper ever receive a majority, this country will face some scary, scary times.

to be honest, im not much for Canadian politics... actually im not much for politics at all, but i was actually intrigued by your video. you do have a valid point... torture is wrong not matter what anyone says about it. sorry i dont have much more to say on this comment

It's my belief that the voting system is rigged. Just like every appointed position in the government. Favors for favors.
RayQuade 2 years ago
Sometimes I wonder. Especially when I hear everyone around me complain about the Conservatives...I start to wonder WHO is voting for them!?
Then again, I know no one from western Canada...so that's probably why.
Forget seperating Québec from Canada. They should divide the country at the manitoba/ontario border! ;P

Proroguing makes me hungry for pierogis. As an american, I will continue to be apathetic about canada. But I support your sentiments =]

i normally hate people Vlogging about their political views, and tend to just not watch them. Yet, i'm surprisingly comfortable with this post. You could tell me the worlds on fire, and as long as you were smiling, i wouldnt mind at all. Keep it up.

HI Luna,
Christopher White here.

I enjoyed this and no need to apologize for caring.
rhythm7a 2 years ago 2
the thing is, I really understand the apathy, I really do! Its just starting to get ridiculous, and it is so insanely easy now to read up on this stuff.

Marry me please, so I can live in paradise, too! I'm house broken! Mostly.

Oh, you wacky Canadians and your ideas. First, you don't like torturing people. Next, you'll probably talk about something REALLY crazy, like a government-sponsored health care system. You silly Canadians.

hey we care about torture done to dogs in puppy mills... oh that's because people are paid to obtain your name on a piece of paper on ste-catherine street in Montreal...
jpichette25 2 years ago
@jpichette25 I don't get it (I'm American). Why are people paid to obtain your name? They must get 100 Jack Mehoffs and Mike Hunts a day.

Wow, I didn't know he said that. Harper needs to go away. We need a real leader.
