It was prefectly okay with helping to overthrow the democratically elected Mosadeq government in Iran in the 50's and installing the Shah (one of the most brutal dictators of the last half century). Well you see the 9/11 attacks were completely predictable. Foreign and domestic experts had been warning about it for years. And the fact of the matter is that they weren't attacked "first", the attacks were not unprovoked, they resulted from decades of American foreign policy that absoluting desemated the lower classes of the Middle-East, thereby radicalizing them. The Geneva Conventions matter, but I really don't think the average person understands the Afghan detainee issue. We picked sides over there, and when we turned over Taliban dudes to their opponents (whose side we chose), some of the Taliban guys got mistreated by their opponents.

Harper has consistently shown disregard for democratic conventions since the Conservatives took power, both abroad and in Canada. Proroguing parliament twice in the span of a year is a pretty clear-cut way of telling Canadians that their voice means jack shit and that if the opposition won't keep their mouths shut in the House of Commons he'll just lock the doors so they can't get in. As a dual citizen of the US and Canada Harper reminds me a lot of Bush. He just has better grammar.
