Lawrence Philpot, aka Larry Levan, legendary disc jockey of the Paradise Garage, record producer and remixer died Sunday, November 8, 1992 at Beth Israel Hospital from heart failure due to endocarditis: he was 38. Larry is revered primarily as the DJ and driving force of the famous gay disco Paradise Garage. With engineer Richard Long, he custom-designed the Garage's monster sound system and DJ booth, complete with audiophile Thorens turntables.
Man, That place was off the hook. the best music club in the world. The members, the sound, the atmosphere. when you got tired you just sit down on the floor and folks just danced around you. Cornel Abrams, Lotita Holiday and others performing live. Best memories of my young live. I can still see it all 25 years later.
My brother met his wife yolanda there....that place meant so much to them. the way they described it to me was so accurate that when i finally saw footage of the club i freaked out. just what i envisioned. wish i was old enough to go back then (was only 13) :( Someone said the garage was 1000 years ahead of its time...couldnt have said any better. rip larry levan and mel cheren.
At that time I remember everyone coming to the clubs just to have fun, it didn't matter what borough you were from. I hardly ever saw a fight or even people argue inside the club (of course the bouncers were on you in a heartbeat), we just wanted to party and hustle the night away. It seems like yesterday.... yet it was almost 30 years ago.
LOL NYC Peech Boys. WoW. Remember the rooftop. They built a deck on the roof and installed some bose speakers. We use to go up and chill for a moment then back on the dance floor. My first time in the Garage I think was about 1981.
I still have a flyer from the night Grace Jones was there. She came on at 4am. They Still have parites but now a lot of Yuppies come and they just don't have a clue.My god his remix of Chaka Tearing it up and the bass..And lord Better days on Sunday night you talk about danceing. The kids today don't have that.
i was there from day one,,,when larry had the turn tables,,,on the main floor,,,i remember the first,,member-ship,,card!!!it was a business card,,,thank-you,,,thanks LARRY!!!
I am going to see if I managed to keep any of the old flyers now. I may have one or two in a tube but I still have my 'Garage ID'. I actually held onto the Keith Haring 'Aparteid' poster until a couple of years ago. I use to always decorate a wall with the Garage flyers!
Legend. So many great mixes. Peanut Butter Gwen Guthrie reminds me of being there and being so thrilled to have got inside, the atmosphere was amazing. Thanks for posting.
You are right, went the other day to the new shelter and passed by to pay respects to 84 King street. I miss the Garage so, so much, does anybody know if any of the old staff is around anymore, especially from the change room? Peace love and cant wait for it to happen
Grazie per questo. Le lacrimi chi hanno saltato al ver questo tributo e al ricordare una bella epoca di la mia vita. E vero...io sono americano...ma Larry e di tutti noi.
the deephousemusicpage is Sh**. They have some good mixes. I tell you one thing if these kids today had clubs like the Garage to get their shit off there wouldn"t be as much killin as it is. All we needed was the music.
I couldn't agree more I was at 84 King Street from Summer of 81 until that fateful month of October 87. There will never, ever be a venue -or time- comparable to those nights spent at that place.
i doubt that...the music is still there...the kids just arent as passionate bout the music as they are about the drugs. It's a shame...anyway, the Martinez Brothers are on that level of passion...they will be big
