  • Your vid is popular on Brazzaville

  • Great.. I am around the strange part of Youtube once again.

  • This vid is popular on Mali

  • @eddyallen615 what is Mali?

  • tempered glass

  • So with temperate glass on the bottom, that cannot be drilled?

  • @BHOLT08 you cannot drill any glass that is tempered. try searching some YouTube videos to see what happens when you do.

  • I really like the idea of using a piece of wood to start as a guide, Great idea!

I have to say that screaming kids in the back ground sucks though haha.

  • @redroab79 my kids are 7 and 5 now and they still scream! lol

  • Excellent video man. It is so cool to see it done and the way you set it up with the water being piped in and the block of wood on the bottom. I am way more confident now to drill my tanks.

Thanks for sharing this with us man. Now how do I silicone a 150 gal tank with the old stile top and bottom banding? How do get the banding back together? It looks like it has come apart but there is no clear way of fastening it back together.

  • @wiffsofsmoke thanks for your comment. As for silicon advice, i haven't had much luck with that. I tried to replace some glass once and it ended up splitting on me, nice thing that i caught it and got it under control.

  • what's the purpose for the holes

  • @MrCasanova1979 In the Marine hobby, we drill holes in the tank for draining the water into a sump. Otherwise, you would have to create a syphon over the top of the tank which could flood the tank in the event of a syphon loss. If you have been to a fish store they have the same system. Many tanks that drain into a large sump (normally not seen) where the filtration takes care of the dirty business.

  • Good Job!!

  • After watching your video, I'm going to try it! thanks!

  • Where was the water going.... All over the laundry room? Hope not, wouldn't make the wife happy! Great job!

  • you might find in tanks that are drilled ,, you can make a bottom drill quiet but side holes are usually noisey ,,, of corse this is the air and not the water that makes sound

  • Why do people drill tanks? Please answer.

  • @cjoIIProductionz to install sumps under

  • Is there a specific type of hole saw that is needed for glass? I found one at home depot but it was $27 and out of my budget. There is a metal one online, "RIDGID No. 7012, 1 In. Bi-Metal Hole Saw" for only $10. Great video by the way, I like your idea with a piece of wood

  • @irbenson Yes, it must be a diamond bit hole saw.

You can look at the hole saws at mops.ca

They do ship to Canada and US.

If $27 is out of you budget then I would not consider drilling you tank. If you crack it by mistake then you will be worse off.

If it is one hole, fish stores do it for $25 a hole but they dont guarantee not to crack it

  • @irbenson there is another way ,, but its not worth it you use a cutting compound and a brass hole saw ,,, but its really really messy and the dust is twice as bad from this method and it slow ,,, trust me for the hassel even if you have to save up its worth it to get the diamond bit

  • fair play well - job well done

  • why would you just do this outside ?

  • @ReeferDave

    2 reasons:

    - I did this in February and it was most likely very cold with snow outside

    - I was by myself and bringing that tank upstairs wouldn't have been possible

The method I used is very handy and works and have drilled 3 tanks in my basement.

  • nice work man

  • My LSFS will drill a tank bought from them free, but if you bring them a tank, they drill for 25 a hole, with a guarantee :), didnt know that until after setup haha

  • The wood rig is genius. Good job.

  • Thanks :)

  • @gweeto052 this video is awesome what is the size of this tank and what is the brand name mine has the same center brace but i bought mine used and i wanted to know if i could drill my tank thanks:)

  • good job men i just bought the bit... i am nervous, this gave me motivation :) hope things on my side will go well

  • Is that a bowfront tank dude?

  • no, it is a 65g 36x24x16

  • great man thanks exactly what i needed

  • Why do you run the water while you drill.. does it help??

    Great vid btw

  • keeps the glass dust down so you dont breathe it in. that wont mess you up if you inhailed it

  • Makes me kinda nervous with the holes being so close together

  • thanks

  • Lol at baby in back ground! :P Great video very helpful

  • @bhs2229 DAT CRYBABY

  • Nice guide.. what is the name/diameter of the drill bit? and what is the name/size of pipe fittings to attach in the aquarium holes? Please send me PM.. thanks.

  • I have a custom made tank and was wondering how can i tell if mine is tampered? i cant call anyone and ask.

  • excellent video A+

  • five star!

what is the drill head make of?

how long does it takes to drill a hole?

can a drill powered by AC do the job as i see you are using a cordless drill.

does the drill head comes with different size?

  • can i ask why u made the holes

  • to add the plumbing, check out my other videos including sump for you answer

  • great job showing everyone, hopefully they can learn that its not as hazardous as everyone says

  • thanks for the video

  • :)

sand dust (slurry) + skin = not good

sandles + feet + socks - other people = warm safe feet

  • It wouldn't be a hobby if it wasn't DIY

I like things done my way too

  • Awesome!

  • here is my new setup almost done

-68g tank with DIY suface skimming box drilled with 2 x 1" bulkheads and durso drains.

-1" return with 3 x 3/4" flexiable ball socket pipe and nozzles

-55g sump and 2og fuge drilled with 1" bulkhead

    - laguna 1500 return pump

    - becket downdraft skimmer 400g rated (guess) with mag 9

    - phosban reactor and 15w UV with maxijet 400

    - 130lb LR, 80lb LS argonite

    - 4 x 39w T5HO Glo 2 actinic, 2 18,000k

  • Good video. But, if I may suggest something. Instead of a constant water flow to keep the heat and dust down from the drilling you could have made a pool of water around the holes with plummers puddy and saved a mess to clean up. But still it was a fine job.

  • lots of people use plumbers putty, I have my main in my rec room and fuge and sump in my laundry room, Where is was doing the drilling is in the laundry next to the drain. no mess at all.

  • so, you are saying that only the bottom of the tank is tempered glass not the sides as well?

  • Every company is different!!!

If you are drilling an expensive tank I would make sure by contacting the company. If you know the type of tank, the local marine store might have a list of what tanks have what type of glass. It is easy to do. I practised on my 20g which is now my fuge

  • safety glass whether its toughened or laminate will have a safety symbol etched into one of the corrners if it doesnt chances are its not.
