This song, written by Dan Schutte, S.J., was released in 1975, when he was a member of the St. Louis Jesuits. I met Dan then and the other members, who were 3 Catholic priests, and one deacon. This was the title song for the album. North American Liturgy Resources published the music then. They deserve better credit. Thank You.

In his book, Why Catholics Can't Sing, Thomas Day points this song out as a shift in traditional hymnology. Before, one would never sing the part of God in a hymn, which is supposed to be a prayer to Him, yet this song does so. Day also points out that the song's refrain is the same music as that of the Brady Bunch theme song, "Here I am Lord, Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night" and "Here's the story, a lovely lady, who was bringing up three very lovely girls."
