Great tutorial, just what I need. I used the Trace Bitmap command in Inkscape & got my new vector pic with white background. How to make the white background become a transparent one? Thanks!
@bernatk, it should be easy to make the white background transparent. Just go to Path>Trace Bitmap and check mark Remove Background, after you check mark Color.
hey, i have a question. i had ,y picture all traced and it looks great but i wanna color it in another program but i can because the background is white. how do i remove the background all together and keep the trace line art?
@cmommsen1 Yes, the vectors have a huge number of points. I am still looking for a good automated way to remove as many points as possible, while preserving the shape of the vectors.
I haven' t made a scroll saw pattern, but it looks like you need to threshold your bitmap into two colors. You can do that in InkScape by using the Single Scan Mode, then change the number of colors to two. Or you can first convert your image to gray scale or monochome using any photo editing or paint program.

your computer must be very fast. Making 20 complex vector objects of a jpeg slows mine to a crwl :(

How do I convert a color jpeg photo into a black and white tracing that would work as a scroll saw pattern?
