  • The coupler itself is two halves, which are steel. In between them is a spacer, which can be rubber or harder materials.

    I really think the problem here was installing the motor and transmission seperately, which caused the alignment to be off, then causing wear in the coupler.

  • The coupler looks as if it's made of plastic or some sort of plastic impregnated fibre. Is that so? I've used lovejoys on machinery in the past, they were always (at least to my recollection) made from steel. I'm guessing other e-car builders have used the same coupler as you w/out problems? Perhaps steel would be the way to go when you replace the existing. Good luck, I love this project of yours :)

  • I know n2confusion prefers to use lovejoy couplers.. they are all steel. For my electric car, I'm going to have one fabricated for me rather than to buy a lovejoy. I know a guy that will make one for me really cheap. Check out my videos, I'm building a 1986 Dodge Daytona. Progress is basically at a standstill while I wait for the transmission plate, but during my Christmas break for college hopefully it will be done, and then I can get some parts in.

  • the motor and transmission shafts must be in perfect alignment (within 0,05 mm). Otherwise you'll be replacing couplers and motor shaft bearings now and then, and eventually the transmission shaft bearings..
