1. The quran is the first source..and the quran speaks in various places strongly For freedom of religion
2. The situation at the time was that apostasy meant treason..it was like going to the enemies with all the information about the muslims (the war was between the muslims and Quraish-the tribe of the prophet that forced them out of their city under the pressure of torture, killing ect.)
3. There were non-muslims at the time (this is authenticated) who tried to make muslims hesitant about their religion by going into islam in the morning and leaving at night or the next day..so this rule was passed to protect the small muslim community at the time so that only convinced people join them because of the above reasons..apostasy was not merely a change of faith in the modern understanding but it was connected to treason
it is also narrated that the prophet left some people who apostated alone and didn't apply any rule to them..it was a political rule to protect the muslim community at the time.....
as for pakistan and other countries..u have to know that the acts of many muslims are often non-islamic and have nothing to do with the religion...there is always a cultural and political dimension to everything.....there is not a single country in the world that fully applies Sharia-Law not even Saudi Arab. or Iran

One issue I have with Islam is it places too many limits on God.... saying Muhammad is the last prophet of god means that God has nothing else to say to us and can never select another prophet. That puts a limit on god. I have studied Islam and Islamic history and quite honestly i find it a very flawed and selfish religion used to oppress others and validate the worst aspects of human nature. Of course there are good aspects aswell but those are far outweighed by the negative.

Certain Hadith are unambiguous about the fate that befalls those who abandon the Islamic faith (see above).Christians in the west don't believe that the Book of Deuteronomy or Exodus should be interpreted literally - for example people aren't killed for working on Sunday. But muslims need to adopt the same attitude. These things were written a very long time ago. It would be much easier if more muslims said 'this stuff is metaphorical' or something.

1. The quran is the first source..and the quran speaks in various places strongly For freedom of religion
2. The situation at the time was that apostasy meant treason..it was like going to the enemies with all the information about the muslims (the war was between the muslims and Quraish-the tribe of the prophet that forced them out of their city under the pressure of torture, killing ect.)

One issue I have with Islam is it places too many limits on God.... saying Muhammad is the last prophet of god means that God has nothing else to say to us and can never select another prophet. That puts a limit on god. I agree that the most fundamental of Muslims are bent on world domination and condemnation of non-believers. But, I think we could accurately apply that same statement to the fundamentalist Christian groups such as Pat Robertson's. Some radical religious groups behead people. Others just deny them work so that they starve, steal their land and its water and minerals, and exclude them from most of the conventions of their dominant society. Either way, deaths occur. There's just less blood.

The problem is people who are eager to label all Muslims as terrorists. Far too simplistic and ignorant of human nature and the diversity of practices within a religion. Terrorism is a big problem, and many terrorists are Muslim, but that doesn't make all Muslims terrorists. As far Islam being a political movement and not a religion, it's easy to do a little research to find that Islam is indeed a religion.
