Those dutch sure know how to do it (kind of justifies happy hardcore, doesn't it?). I sort of remember having a conversation with a friend about piezoelectricity back before any of us even knew the term actually existed (let alone the technology). She wanted to buy up a bunch of old Nintendo power pads and splice them together to create a power producing dancefloor. How should I go about macgyvering together a working prototype like this?

Nope, these ideas DO NOT WORK. You don't get free energy ever. The energy generated by the dance floor for example is powered by humans. Those humans have to expend more energy than normal, so they have to eat more, and straight away it all falls down.
Its not free energy. Its just a transfer of energy. Energy is always conserved and is usually lost into many forms unless it is transfered/"converted" to a different. This just a transfer of energy and is very possible.
This is the recovery of energy that would otherwise go to waste. If they were normal floors, the vibrations would have absorbed into the floor and into the foundation. If there was a cheap and easy way to recover all wasted energy/heat the world would be so much better off. Cars put out waste heat through their radiators; light bulbs (even CFLs) put out wasted heat. So no, this isn't free energy...
The last example is stupid. The tram needs more energy to drive, because the rail will giving way, if it is made of piezzo elements. Knowing that you will waste energy at every conversion you make, it is an stupid example.
Imagine home & work applications w/ this? Just walking would produce power for hoem lighting while solar & wind could power appliances, outlets, etc. A VERY novel idea.
you would be so tired it would be like dancing on a bed for hours they just thought of the best thing that could be put in a video but if ever tried would be ridiculously stupid
You've got to respect corporations like Toyota for sponsoring such technologies. Of course, it is in their interests to invest in alternative sources of energy a la hybrid, piezoelectricity, solar and others.
They figure 5 to 10 watts generated per person. This kind of tech should be used in huge train stations like Penn and Grand Central that get hundreds of thousands of people every day.
the point isnt that it would create enough energy to run other things. the point is that it produces enough energy to power it self. if every thing produced enough energy to power it self then we all would be very happy people cause that means no more gas bills, but how realistic is that idea. i have no idea. i would have to see how much energy it produce to how much pressure is applied.
Um dia ainda me mudo pra aí...
why is it that health clubs and dance clubs play the worst music ever produced by human beings? I'd rather jump up and down next to a construction site.
Weighing costs against benefits is important. If that concern makes Chriswaterguy "sound like a republican", then he is representing the republicans well.
Aim for more emissions, because the planet needs it!

You would get too much energy if you played drum and bass. you could probably sell the extra energy back to the power company

it's mindblowing the places we can find energy, even more so the advances in technology to utilize wasted energy... it's a lot to take in for sure

It's not about creating self-sustaining dance clubs or trains, it's about making use of some energy that would otherwise be wasted.
It's not a LOT of energy, but hey, it's something.

too bad you need a LOT of vibration to power something like a night club.

Problem is its going to cost a lot more than it saves... The club would reap publicity from the investment which will help pay for it...

Realistically though, how much electricity could the dance floor save in relation to how much the night club uses? A tiny, tiny amount i'm guessing.
pharcyde7 4 years ago
The dance club thing is obviously just to sell the technology. There are tons of better ways to use it. Say, New York Streets?

probably if you have a full house you can generate enogh energy, but it would have a step generator...
I think if you have people dancing in rithm you would have much amplitude but low frequency, but who developed this probably know what he is doing

How much embedded energy (from building the system) versus how much output? It strikes me as a gimmick.
