We used to go to the Ritz at Brighouse every Saturday morning with our gabardine’s coats tied around our necks by the sleeves, the coat became batman's cape and we used to slap our thighs pretending we were on horses, though I'm not sure Batman ever had a horse!!! If your family were rich, you could go to the Ritz in the morning and the Albert or the Savoy in the afternoon as they all ran children’s clubs on a Saturday. We wern't rich!!
Great memories of the ABC MInors at the Regal Cinema in Levenshulme, Manchester. I remember the outings to Southport. We went by coach, played on the sands and took part in sandcastle competitions, went on the Pleasure Beach unsupervised and ended the day with a visit to the ABC cinema on Lord Street to watch a film!! Surprisingly no one got lost or left behind. Ah, the freedom of a 50s childhood!!
Like you hwane I used to go to the Regal on the Cowley Road in Oxford in the 1960's and I went back there last November to see Marina and the Diamonds in concert, what great memories going back through the Regal's doors.
I was an ABC Minor at the Regal on Cowley Road, Oxford in the 1960's. We also used to sing along to Bits and Pieces by the Dave Clark Five. Great days!
@howardone8 -- the Piccadilly was my local as well, or one of my locals. The other was the Alhambra on the Moseley Road. We lived in Main Street, Sparkbrook. I've still got my ABC Minors badge.
Yes I was a ABC young Monitor who was one of a gang that had to look after the crowd, In the beginning the Manager would be on stage and give out birthday treats, then the films started. our Job (that gave us free entry slave labour hahahaha) was to keep every one in control with out the use of force. I remember I had a great voice I could shout and every one could hear me hahaha.
We also had to fix problems if we could like finding things people dropped, Thanks for the post...
I was an ABC Minor in the early 70's @ the Doncaster ABC on Cleveland street...Soooo many great memories of that place... Many thanks for this vid Highintensity
I remember this very well. I'm 51 years old in 2011, but recall singing this at the local ABC cinema every Saturday Morning. I actually have a 45" record with this on it somewhere. Picked it up at a car boot for a £1.
I am only 46 but still remember with affection belting out this song each week at the liverpool carlton, the manager would ask who's birthday it was and about 100 kids would put their hands up regardless.
This must have been the newer version. Back in the 50's the music was a band and at the end they would shout ABC. I used to go to a cinema in Cambridge, (a tanner at that time). I can't remember what the cinema was called now, but it was near Emery Street? I always remember the bricks at the side of the building were very soft, and due to long lines of people waiting to get in over the years there were loads of hemispherical holes in the bricks. People's shillings! What was the cinema called?
Aww! This brings back memories! Saturday mornings at the Market Harborough fleapit. 6d in the cheap seats and 9d in the balcony. I was only in the balcony once!
Well I really loved it! This brings back many happy memories (I'm 55 now but still wished I could have afforded the ABC glow in the dark badge). I agree that it must have been a nightmare for the manager. I can recall more than once the film being stopped half way through and the manager coming to the front of the screen and reading the riot act...we just simply crouiched down in our seats and stamped our feet even louder....happy days!!!
