@Dstorm20xx No he didn't leave. The end means that under all this Dr. Horrible Stuff there is still only Billy who had archieved all he wanted but is still not happy because Penny is dead. This Evil Villain stuff is only a kind of mascerade. Thats what i understood
@Dstorm20xx ThePowerfulThree got it spot on I think. Basically there is Dr. Horrible who is apparently pleased at all he has achieved, now the most horrific of all villians and completely feared but inside he's still Billy and he can't actually be happy because the one thing he really wanted was Penny and she's dead. For all outwards appearances though he's still Dr. Horrible of the Evil League.
I think penny realized she liked Billy when he brought her the frozen yogurt, but she already in a relationship and too passive to dump him. The way she seemed sad and said he was "pretty ok" and sang for Billy to cheer him up. I'd say she was just like Billy - to shy to tell him she liked him. Like when they first talked in the alley, and she looked so sad that he ignored her and she looked eager for him to come to her meeting thing.
@rassilonsvids Uh... that's not Brand New Day kicking in, that's Score (the opening theme). At least, I don't /recognise/ any of Brand New Day in this one.
idk, Penny was so easy... I mean after sleeping with a douche she realizes she likes Billy afterall? I don't really sympathize with that character, meh. DH/Billy should've kept looking for a better girl.
@cloverforluck When did she realize she likes Billy? She was into the hammer the whole time. She even said at the end "It's ok, Captain Hammer will save us".
@lawlzerskates She was waiting for Billy with yogurt at the laundry place, and the lyrics of the song, "This is perfect for me, so they say, I guess he's pretty okay" Pretty okay isn't something you'd describe a guy you're 'into'.
@cloverforluck She was waiting for him as a friend. That didn't mean she was into Billy. She clearly had problems with Hammer, but she liked him because of how he helped the homeless. She didn't like his speech, but her last line showed that she still liked Captain Hammer. She was never into Billy.
@lawlzerskates She was in a guy who was there, Billy just wasn't and, instead of just trying to be near her like any normal human being would do, he turned it all upside down and it all ended bad. If he tried just talking, she might've stayed with him.
@lawlzerskates She was holding onto one man, who happened to be a jackass, but nevertheless. In her quest of helping everybody around she needed a strong shoulder, but she never was "into" him. That last line was not said with heart, but with abandon.
Has anyone besides me noticed the sarcasm in the lyrics from 0:00 to 0:25 ??
"Here lies everything, the world I wanted at my feet" Penny! "My victory's complete, so hail to the king" he's basically calling himself an idiot at that part! At least in my opinion.
The ending really through me off. I never expected it to end that way. It was extremely sad. And the song was great. I love Neil's singing more than anyone else's.

yes it's tragic and a great end. but dont u think that a sequel with a delirious Dr. Horrible who sees Penny in his Horribleness :P and captain hammer who also sees a Penny and a fun finale wherein they facedown and the 2 Penny's talk :P something strange like that. As long as its funny, there are some good songs, (A) and Felicia Day is in it (A) i'll watch it. And they can introduce us properly to Bad Horse :) and Dead Bowie xD.
Dude ofcourse he's not evil, he's never been evil to begin with remember the seen about johny snow: " There's kids in that park!" and the first sentence of this song also sums it up:
Here lies everything, the world I wanted at my feet." So the world he wanted? or the one he wanted at his feet? So he is just heartbroken and puts up a façade to the outside world.
And a sequel could be cool. With maybe a delirious Billy?
What i think the message behind this was, He got the world he wanted because he's a bad guy, but at what cost? He lost his "love" and he has no one to share his life with now. Yes he's a good guy in general, when he makes the kids comment, But he's still a super villain. He's what you would call a tragic hero...
@Fuzzybear3312 ripping out my pubes with tweasers and then bathing in a tub of tabasco sauce is better than Hannah Montana, but Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is way better than other good things.

Then end of this is so heart wrenching. Dr. Horrible just wanted the bast for her. Capitan Hammer just wanted to do her and at the end she still said "Captain Hammer will save us". really dude... you're going to relate this to "The Dark Knight"? ... honestly... that movie has no cinematic merits other than special effects.
I <3 (sarcasm) how you are trying to get all deep with some twisted perspective... if they do a sequel, the only storyline that's appropriate is to revive penny for a happy ending.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Poor Penny couldn't change his mind, and she paid for his naive arrogance. I think this is right up there on my list of good, depressing movies next to Schindler's List and 1984.
It's a bit hard to compare the two, wouldn't you say? I mean, Schindler's List was based off of something real. If you learn anything learn that real life tragedy and wickedness can never be trumped by fictional versions.
You could look at it that way, or you could look at it like he couldn't change HER naive innocence/compassion. She was a bit thick to the end, proclaiming "It's okay... it's okay... Captain Hammer will save us..."
Really, what's sad is that they never made it to a middle ground.
As much as I love this and would give anything to have more of it, I don't think it can be improved upon--they should just leave it as-is: sequelless.
i agree, they should leave it as is, but theyve confirmed that a sequel is in the works. i just hope it doesnt do what so many other sequels do and ruin the magic of the first one.
The greater you do, the less sequel making you should do. Onl6y thing I have ever loved that made an even more amazing sequel was space channel 5, but they quickly realized that they pushed their luck and got lucky in doing so well and didn't make a third game. Doctor Horrible, Space Channel 5, Rocky Horror Picture Show, all unique concepts that live on in my most fondest of memories, right next to my first cookie, and right before I learned I could make cookies easily at home XD
I think it would work as an early evening Series, in the end it would come off to the audience (Since most people label things before watching it properly) as some dumb power rangers thing, so they would have to first market the show as a "Live Action Hero Spoof" to hook viewers, after they hooked viewers, they then could safely relabel themselves.. and yes... penny has got to stay dead. Besides, she has to wow us with "The Guild" (Pun intended, and also horrible)
hrm...I heard that Dr. Horrible is a ripoff of Dr. Steel....this song proves a bit otherwise, though the whole "Evil Scientist, who also sings" is originally Dr. Steel's bit. Also, I think Dr. Steel has the whole "Evil Scientist" thing down a lot better...though, to a much less humorous extent...oh well, just my opinion.
yeah, he's a musician based in California. He's ridiculously underground...might be because he has no recording company backing him up (sort of suits his stage persona). Also, he's an excessively good actor; he claims he's crazy, and that he's gonna take over the world, but his speeches are so extensive, and filled with "facts" (the way he says it though, makes it sound all true), that a part of you wonders whether its all just an act... You can see some of his speeches on youtube
also, just so you don't get disappointed, Dr. Steel's humor is umm...not bad (not as good as Dr. Horrible's)....but different...He seems to focused on his character to make himself funny
Argh, the reason he lost Penny is because he hesitated killing someone. That is a catch 22. D: His good side interrupted his bad side, causing his good side to die with Penny, and his bad side to get everything it wanted.
in my opinion it was a win/lose for Dr.Horrible//Billy when Penny died. on one hand there was nothing stopping him for going for the league (you got to admit that the main reason he kept messing up was because he kept thinking of Penny) but on the other hand, he was sad because he lost the girl of his dreams... ='(
well what you expect he chose power over happiness in that moment before the van heist he chose to pursue power over happiness. it's interesting how one decision affect how things played out but if he didnt pursue power I will point out there would be no story.
You see, I think Billy is like pie. The top layer is the guy who falls in love with Penny, Dr. Horrible is the filling, but when Penny is dead, there's teh deeper level, the crust, that's just the same as the top. It's a dead giveaway at the end. His last few words: And I won't feel... a thing.
he wanted to be truly evil and un caring. it was his goal to be that villian but he never managed to pull it off because he wasnt evil thats why we all managed to care for him. it was the loss of penny that oushed him over the edge into being truly evil
Evil is a word that is confused because of people like Hitler who were mass murderers. Dr. Horrible WAS evil, the best kind of evil, because he wasn't concerned with petty things like death and destruction, but changing the world. People get the rap for being evil because they know that death and destruction are going to happen, but feel it's an acceptable loss for the end gain. He was "evil", but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have emotions or about people. It's because he cares he's evil.
This pretty much follows the plan of a Greek tragedy, doesn't it. Destroying what you love in the attempt to get what you want, or thought you wanted.
I would contest that there's more to this than to something like Antigone. I think first and foremost it's a commentary on human nature, that the obnoxious and ignorant Captain Hammer has fans coming out his ass while the lovable Dr. Horrible is mistreated and driven to super-villainy.
There is also the matter of the fact that he told Hammer not to use the freeze ray because it was malfunctioning, but was ignored, and that it was Captain Hammer who caused it to explode (killing Penny).
No, he didn't really, he didn't get Penny, her last words were about Captin Hammer saving her, she didn't even say goodbye to Billy. Then he kinda just became an empty shell feeling no emotions.
He would probably given up everything for Penny. He did not get everything he wanted.
SerenityRox99: He is not an empty shell feeling no emotions. He says that, but if you see the last bit of the third act, you can see that he does feel something.
I see Penny as being his last hope in humanity, and when he dies, he turns cold inside, and becomes the super villain he couldn't while in love with her.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Real name of the song is Everything You Ever, get it right Sanzu101, at least give them enough credit for what they worked hard at, rather then mistaking the name.
anyone else catch the symbolism in the movie at this part? throughout the entire film he blogs in his costume, but in his final blog (very last scene) he dresses as a normal man.
I always thought those last two seconds were a symbol of him having made up the whole thing. His daydream about Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer and Penny reflected his real life, but it wasn't real. He was in love with Penny (which was probably even the girl's name in real life), but she was with another guy and in the end he couldn't have her, even if the rest of his dreams (probably something to do with changing the world) had come true.
When he's in public, dressed in the Dr. Evil suit, he can put on the Dr. Evil persona and act as cruel, cool, and heartless as he's supposed to be. But when he goes home and takes off the persona (the suit), he's just... dead inside, hollowed out with all the grief and guilt he's not allowed to feel as Dr. Evil.
Actually, from 1:31 to 1:48 it is the Brand New Day chorus tune, but just with a sadder tone, while in Brand New Day it was more angry.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Poor Penny couldn't change his mind, and she paid for his naive arrogance. I think this is right up there on my list of good, depressing movies next to Schindler's List and 1984.
Graycloak 2 years ago
i mean, yea its depressing but it can NEVER compare to Schindler's List... Joss Whedon MAY be a genius but not compared to that :)
falloutgirl5011 2 years ago
It's a bit hard to compare the two, wouldn't you say? I mean, Schindler's List was based off of something real. If you learn anything learn that real life tragedy and wickedness can never be trumped by fictional versions.
TheOriginalKZero 2 years ago
lol you're joking right?
eagledynasty81 2 years ago
You could look at it that way, or you could look at it like he couldn't change HER naive innocence/compassion. She was a bit thick to the end, proclaiming "It's okay... it's okay... Captain Hammer will save us..."
Really, what's sad is that they never made it to a middle ground.
TheOriginalKZero 2 years ago 3
As much as I love this and would give anything to have more of it, I don't think it can be improved upon--they should just leave it as-is: sequelless.
CheeseCakeExplosion 2 years ago 12
i agree, they should leave it as is, but theyve confirmed that a sequel is in the works. i just hope it doesnt do what so many other sequels do and ruin the magic of the first one.
MonkeyMan0x 2 years ago
Worst comes to worst, we pretend the sequel doesn't exist. At best, it'll be just as good and add to the story.
Kemmetmau 1 year ago 3
The greater you do, the less sequel making you should do. Onl6y thing I have ever loved that made an even more amazing sequel was space channel 5, but they quickly realized that they pushed their luck and got lucky in doing so well and didn't make a third game. Doctor Horrible, Space Channel 5, Rocky Horror Picture Show, all unique concepts that live on in my most fondest of memories, right next to my first cookie, and right before I learned I could make cookies easily at home XD
WhiteTiger225 2 years ago 4
They can do it correctly. they just have to not make classic cliche's.
they CANT bring back penny. That'd be the worst decision.
BeGrunge 2 years ago 5
I think it would work as an early evening Series, in the end it would come off to the audience (Since most people label things before watching it properly) as some dumb power rangers thing, so they would have to first market the show as a "Live Action Hero Spoof" to hook viewers, after they hooked viewers, they then could safely relabel themselves.. and yes... penny has got to stay dead. Besides, she has to wow us with "The Guild" (Pun intended, and also horrible)
WhiteTiger225 2 years ago
i dont think they're making it into a SERIES... but they announced a sequel.
BeGrunge 2 years ago 2
Whedon has said that Penny is still dead for the sequel.
Scarygothgirl 2 years ago 6
It's not really a brining back, but more like an alteration. I do agree though, i love this original tale. I don't want them to ruin it either.

Wolfoftheazuresky 2 years ago 5
hrm...I heard that Dr. Horrible is a ripoff of Dr. Steel....this song proves a bit otherwise, though the whole "Evil Scientist, who also sings" is originally Dr. Steel's bit. Also, I think Dr. Steel has the whole "Evil Scientist" thing down a lot better...though, to a much less humorous extent...oh well, just my opinion.
phunkbot 2 years ago
the humor is what makes this unique.
I have never heard of Dr. Steel, is it online?
lordspamalot 2 years ago
yeah, he's a musician based in California. You can see some of his speeches on youtube
phunkbot 2 years ago
also, just so you don't get disappointed, Dr. Steel's humor is umm...not bad (not as good as Dr. Horrible's)....but different...He seems to focused on his character to make himself funny

Aww. Next time I have iTunes credit, I wanna buy this series. I love it.

Argh, the reason he lost Penny is because he hesitated killing someone. That is a catch 22. D: His good side interrupted his bad side, causing his good side to die with Penny, and his bad side to get everything it wanted.
Aaah.
Aaaaaaaaaah.

littlemsemily 2 years ago
in my opinion it was a win/lose for Dr.Horrible//Billy when Penny died. on one hand there was nothing stopping him for going for the league (you got to admit that the main reason he kept messing up was because he kept thinking of Penny) but on the other hand, he was sad because he lost the girl of his dreams... ='(

well what you expect he chose power over happiness in that moment before the van heist he chose to pursue power over happiness. it's interesting how one decision affect how things played out but if he didnt pursue power I will point out there would be no story.

Kalilalex 2 years ago
You see, I think Billy is like pie. The top layer is the guy who falls in love with Penny, Dr. Horrible is the filling, but when Penny is dead, there's teh deeper level, the crust, that's just the same as the top. It's a dead giveaway at the end. His last few words: And I won't feel... a thing.
Sinha61 2 years ago 9
thats why the metaphor is in there.
coolroxas 2 years ago
he wanted to be truly evil and un caring. it was his goal to be that villian but he never managed to pull it off because he wasnt evil thats why we all managed to care for him. it was the loss of penny that oushed him over the edge into being truly evil
comicbookfan5611 2 years ago 6

PyreOMania 2 years ago 8
he got what he was striving to get but now he "does not feel a thing" because he got at at a price, penny's death

Why does the background music say "Everything You Ever?"
DaredToMove 3 years ago 2
because Dr Horrible, in the end, gets Everything he Ever... wanted :D
Tzarathustra83 3 years ago 9
No, he didn't really, he didn't get Penny, her last words were about Captin Hammer saving her, she didn't even say goodbye to Billy. Then he kinda just became an empty shell feeling no emotions.
SerenityRox99 3 years ago 3
yes, an empty shell in the league of evil who is feared and is on the fast track to world domination. that's the stuff he wanted.
Tzarathustra83 3 years ago 3
He would probably given up everything for Penny. He did not get everything he wanted.
SerenityRox99: He is not an empty shell feeling no emotions. He says that, but if you see the last bit of the third act, you can see that he does feel something.
elfboy676 3 years ago 2
in he beginning of the feature, he was blogging as he who really wanted to be, dr horrible, a man who will take over the world
as he went on, he grew more attached to penny, and wasn't sure what he wanted wanted anymore
when she died, he realized what she really wanted
you'll notice at the end if this song, during "a thing", it shows normal billy standing on the blog set
i think that symbolizes that he no longer wants to be dr horrible
but what do i know, i'm some kid on youtube, right?
BMBlasterMan 2 years ago 6
I see Penny as being his last hope in humanity, and when he dies, he turns cold inside, and becomes the super villain he couldn't while in love with her.

anyone else catch the symbolism in the movie at this part? throughout the entire film he blogs in his costume, but in his final blog (very last scene) he dresses as a normal man.
PerishBrave 3 years ago 4
I get the sybolism I just can't seem to put it in words.
shinycrazy 3 years ago
yea same lol. hoping somebody may know how to put it. I mean i know what it is supposed to mean, just not it's classification.
PerishBrave 3 years ago
Maybe it means, he tries so hard to be the evil guy and when he finally achieves it, he doesn't care because Penny's gone.
buffy1rox 3 years ago 3
I always thought those last two seconds were a symbol of him having made up the whole thing. His daydream about Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer and Penny reflected his real life, but it wasn't real. He was in love with Penny (which was probably even the girl's name in real life), but she was with another guy and in the end he couldn't have her, even if the rest of his dreams (probably something to do with changing the world) had come true.
Fiddlereeler07 2 years ago 6
you are thinking way too much into this.
ssskinner 2 years ago 5
I actually thought the same thing
rileylendrum 2 years ago 2
He finally achieved what he wanted to, but it was meaningless because the reason he did it, Penny, was now gone.
Personally, I teared up a bit for him at this point =P
Xephos 3 years ago 11
When he's in public, dressed in the Dr. Evil suit, he can put on the Dr. Evil persona and act as cruel, cool, and heartless as he's supposed to be. But when he goes home and takes off the persona (the suit), he's just... dead inside, hollowed out with all the grief and guilt he's not allowed to feel as Dr. Evil.
