  • Preach on Sister! You didn't get the recognition you deserved, but I'm sure your singing with a great Gospel band 'in the air'. RIP Sister Loretta Tharpe!

  • yeah unlike Beyonce who has to do all videos in her panties.. sorry, butt its true. I get so sick of b selling anything she can on tv. .. Rosetta is purely for the soul, and giving it all with her heart .. and that is so much more !

  • coolest venue ever!

  • Sister Rosetta got game!

  • Definitely one of the early Rock n Rollers that existed pre Bill Hayley and Elvis. Her roots of course are in Gospel and what a fantastic performer. The World could have gone crazy over Rosetta, and it's only in recent times she's receiving the acclaim which is truly deserved.

  • HOLY....! Mrs. Tharpe, ma'am, you make me proud to be human.

  • Who would dislike this video, really?! One of a kind and absolutley brilliant!

  • I would love to have this video, if anyone knows where I can buy it.

  • Sister Rosetta was an icon and a legend in music. American religious leaders during her time could not accept her break from traditional church music with an electric guitar. Never the less, she brought gospel music to a new young audience in America and around the world. She was a shinning star all over Europe and innovator. She was one of those pioneers who made American music cherished and imitated all over the world. Among her many honors is a U. S. postal Stamp with her image.

  • John Lee Hooker does a kick ass version of this

  • That was magnificent!

  • ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.......Rosetta rules!

  • she's the best...

  • Aaah, she's so LOVELY! I adore her!! Its a huge treat to see this great woman hanging with the boys and getting down with the blues!

A totally wonderful clip! What a voice, what a talent!

  • Increadible :)

  • I wonder if the chap in the rocking chair was paid for that - terrific job if he was.

  • Excellent for a human being.

  • Pretty good for a human being.

  • obviously otis spann. the genius on piano.

  • If anyone has Lorez Alexandria's version , please share. The best I've heard. Listen to her "Over The Rainbow."

  • An amazing singer, guitar player and performer! What a video!! Thank you.

Mahalia sings to God-no one is better-Sis Thorpe to the people, and she doesn't miss a beat, does she?!

    Two great singers.

  • What a gem to find, at 7.30 am on a dark, wet winter's morning! God, I love the internet!

  • I can't believe how amazing this woman is! Brings tears to my eyes :0)

  • theres a video on here of sonny terry and brownie mcghee playin hootin blues at this same venue. both of these videos are superb! they had a goat stroll on by and listen too! seems groovy there.

  • I think this is what public transport needs more off.

  • I always had her down as Gospel Singer...the Blues were not her genre...but when she went all eelctric she was certainly bluesy!

  • sister rosetta Was one ofthe breed of blues performers that just played as if she was playing to people in line outside the joint....not unlike Hounddog Taylor Earl Hooker and so on..Ill play the way the lord tells me to!!! Chuck Berry had better hit the door!I think thats a late 50s les paul spec..check the 3 buckers and gibson amp..I can try to copy her style..but why bother? I could watch her allday

  • A Total Class act and she didn't even have to show her bellybutton like they have to today!

  • look's like she's singing at a cracker barrel

  • omg...i want her to be my grandma

  • I love her white coat and rhinestones.

  • this is quite surreal.

  • Another great song from the wonderful Sister Rosetta!

  • the crowd shots are edited in fucking genius

  • i want the rockin' chair gig!

  • Wow, this is a video treasure worthy of deep appreciation. Not only for its' historical importance but, to showcase a tutorial for all after her to learn how to play with feeling. You needn't look any further than this. You'll waste your time and it won't get better. This is Youtube/ video Mecca! Thanks so much for posting and sharing this. Peace, Mike

  • whho ever (amazinero) says there aint no rythm hasnt got a f... clue

this music is a feelin you got or you aint and natrualy it comes with a rythm that only those who listen closley and open there hearts can feel (you know feel the beat)

jesus some ignorent bastards thank god we all learn everyday...

  • That crowd has absoluuuuutely NO rhythm. I can't believe they can"t find rhythm in an arrangement like this. Good thing she is strong enough to maintain her emotion in front of a sorry assed crowd.

  • Oh come on. They are English, you can't blame them for having no rhythm!

  • @OgallalaKnowhow You mean the white english have no rhythm!!!

  • @TheFirecogicuk

True true. We're all citizens under the sovereign crown. And there is nothing like a rhythm to break the walls down.

  • Where was this filmed?

  • Sing it Sister!

  • Amazing stuff ! The likes of whom we will never see again ! a magical moment in time, enjoy and reflect how music really was !

  • Wonderful!!!!! Hahahaha!

  • It's crazy to think that these amazing musicians came all the way to Manchester to play for a bunch of white English kids, when in their own country there were still places where they wouldn't have been allowed in let alone to play, because of their skin colour!

All seem to be loving it rain or no rain, and you can really feel the mutual appreciation. It's a mixed up world alright. A

  • I think its Spann on piano, it sounds like his style.

  • agree on Spann, ... love this song :)

  • Great stuff, thanks for uploading it!

  • y'alls should hear her mother Katie Bell Nubin, who made one LP in her whole life, but OH MY! you gotta wrap your ears around Momma! two national musical treasures of the USA!

  • Look at it the other way around: Little Richard started out as a rock'n'roll singer but endet up as a preacher - what do you know! God works in mysterious ways...

  • This piece is extremely interesting as gospel artists NEVER included secular material in their repertoire---this was indeed forbidden here in the American gospel circles. Sure, "Rosetta Tharpe" had recorded secular, but once she became "Sister Rosetta," the blues were to have ended. I was quite surprised and pleased to see this piece in which Tharpe could indeed get away with this over in Europe. Tharpe should have remained there; they loved and respected her art more than in the U.S.

  • Well - Jerry Lee Lewis once said: "I studied to be a preacher but couldn't live up to what I was preachin' so I stuck with rock 'n' roll. What's your problem?" Catch my drift?

  • If you read either "You Send Me: The Life and Times of Sam Cooke" or even the Mahalia Jackson autobiography, you will understand my post regarding gospel music from 1920 to 1980. Sure, we can look at it today and say what was the big deal---but at that time, as well as with this Sister Rosetta piece, once an artist went gospel, he/she stayed there. Sam Cooke was booed off a gospel program after he had already hit big with R & B and pop music. Read on, ZUXAZZ, read on...

  • But I don't see the problem - if you want to put music down in little boxes... Rock'n'roll, rhythm'n'blues, gospel, soul...? Who cares? I don't give a bleedin' f#@k! God is everywhere? Isn't he?

  • ZUXAZZ, Bless your heart, God is indeed everywhere. Today, while there is no stigma attached to the R & B or pop artist that cuts a gospel or Christian music album, eyebrows still raise when the gospel/Christian artist goes R & B/pop (i.e. Amy Grant comes to mind with her big pop/dance remixes on "Baby Baby" and "Every Heartbeat").And watch that mouth of yours, no 4-letter words needed lol

  • she is always on top of her game, consistently amazing.

bass player let me down tho..

  • I agree with the bass part

  • She is just wonderful

  • Elle est géniale !!!

  • Oh man!!! She is amazing!

  • Sweet guitar, powerful voice...I saw this on TV in the 60's and was blown away. When this middle aged woman strapped on that SG, bam!

  • That's actually a 1961 Les Paul. Beautiful instrument.

  • Oh, before they became SG and lost the Les Paul name? Thanks..

  • with the 2 "horns" it looks like an SG...

  • Great !

  • amazing all time great

  • that is really far out to see this sweet lady playing such a MEAN guitar!

  • This gig was actually at Alexandra Road station at the junction of Alexandra Road South and Mauldeth Road West (next to the allotments on the hill). It's just around the cornder from where I grew up, and is still the oldest-looking part of Cholton cum hardy. (A little town in Manchester, England, UK).

  • Awesome, good to know!! She rocked the brits, didn't she??

  • From what I can see on Google, the station is long gone. The right of way for the railroad is still visible, but it looks like the track has been torn up and has been turned into a foot path. The spot marked on Google as the location of the old station now has a road running through it.

  • what year was this?

  • @wazzouz 1963. Watch The Blues and Gospel Train video.

  • @spectralmusic thanks for sharing first hand info

  • @spectralmusic I had a dig around about this. It's actually Wilbraham Road station There is a great website called Disused Stations. Heres a link to the page.

I am trying to post a link but it wont accept it, but if you google disused stations and look for the Wilbraham Road entry you will find it.

  • @spectralmusic ahahaha "cum hardy" you brits sure know how to name your towns.

  • @spectralmusic ... How cool is that?! ... "do not leave luggage unattended", times have changed, eh?

  • @spectralmusic Fab bit of info on Chorlton cum Hardy. Cheers.

  • @spectralmusic That explains the bad clapping.

  • Pretty, pretty good ! yeah!

  • c.1:47: "Pretty good for a woman, ain't it?"

    Hell, yeah.

  • hell yeah

  • @pamphilia Pretty good!! For a woman!! Damn good for anybody!!!!

  • I guess it's more a thing of singing from the soul rather than talent "playing". Then again so much feeling put into her songs, gee...
