  • Genios and very very very rare :)

  • Raul Duke!

  • he was a musical genius ! just me and the pygmy pony LOL Love it!

  • Yay , love Zappa !!!

  • This is a real gem - is the rest of the concert anywhere to be found on youdoob? Can someone please upload it??? Wow!

  • YT should change the layout. One spastic wasnt able to point the right button.

  • What a killer line up! Holy sh*t. It's got everyone I love. I am sad to admit I'm not familiar with the drummer, I must not be as big of a Zappa head as I thought. Still, golden era Zappa, for me. Anything with George Duke and Ruth. Ian too, wow! If had a time machine...

  • @garfrankwyn Drummer is Ralph Humphrey :-)

  • Whenever I introduce people to franks music this is the first video I pull up and people get hooked. This song and video epitomizes everything frank and his music was about. And it's easy to digest for people who have never experienced zappas greatness.

  • Wow, Ruth Underwood! Nice evolving guitar solo too!

  • don't mind the fool who dislikes this, I am of an opinion that there is one guy who makes sure every video on here from the greats has a dislike just to be that guy.

  • who is he slamming in this song?

  • Frank Zappa, one of the 20th century's most underrated and misunderstood musical genius's. Thanks for the legacy of archived videos and audio files that you left behind for us to enjoy. RIP Frank, your music and sense of humor are truly missed.

  • this rocks way too hard

  • fuuuuuucking George Duke. And those chords in that solo, awesome. What a pimp.

  • @JimmyIDUB He's just a humble motherfucker with a big ass dick

  • The Gibson SG guitar sounds fantastic in the palms of Frank Zappa.

  • Jean Luc Ponty on violin

  • KETSCHUPINO-NAJPIEKNIEJSZA MUZA JAKA SKOMPONOWANO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • klarnet, puzon i gitara -prawie kwartet bachoskia ja w 73 sie podobno urodziłam,to piekna muzyka

  • the deathless horsie is the horse. he found the horse... :)

  • whadda massive guitar tone

  • Wow people watch Bruce Fowler in the 5 th minute how he shakes his head to Franks Solo

Thats the Spirit, he s just as Lost in the Solo as Frank is

I love these Moments in the Zappa Live videos when the musicians sort of

Feel the magic happen or somethin like that

The Man with the Mustache changed my understanding of music thanks Frank

  • He didn't compromise, he hired the best musicians he could find, demanded high performance standards, did his own thing and became an icon without selling his soul. It's rare, but it can be done.

  • in montana days don't matter

  • I'm proud to be number 113,941 that watched this number.

  • Saskachewan/Montana border.

  • at 1:57........WHAM !!

  • OMFZ!!!!!

  • A classic.

  • This guitar solo is the high water mark for rock music.

  • diffidently an underrated guitar player ! he i s in my top 10 !

  • no i want that suit you cant have it this guy was a genius

  • Quite simply - Brilliant!!!

  • Can you buy this dvd? If so where?

  • One dislike. I guess he just pushed the wrong button!

  • @harrykork seriously this is some crunchy funk jam

  • @harrykork

Maybe he exspected a Version closer to the Overnite Sensation version and not THAT Jazzy

Erm it wasnt me who pressed that Button

The Only Zappa Song i dont like is Bobby Brown its to Mainstream ish for my Taste

  • @harrykork It really boggles the mind! Why search this video out, only to click "dislike"? Sometimes I really think it out, in kind of an obsessive way, and I come up with thoughts like, - Maybe it's a chick trying to piss off her boyfriend, who is a Zappa freak. - I've known chicks so psychotic, that they'd do something that calculated.

  • @harrykork in this world we just have to accept that there will always be some asshole who wants to wind us up,140,000 people havent pressed the like button but have still gone away liking it

  • @nicknick1963 i pressed the like button lol

  • the intro just blew my speakers... :)

  • Yes it is Jean Luc Ponty, check the Wikipedia entry on FZ for personnel under Top 10 Albums 73-75. George Duke piano, Ruth Underwood percussion Ian Underwood reeds, Sal Maquez trumpet vocals, Napoleon Murphy Brock sax, flute, Bruce Fowler trombone, Tom Fowler bass Chester Thompson or Ralph Humphrey on drums.

    Rob

  • looks cold

  • Existe una persona que jamás usará seda dental,se le caerán los dientes y,entonces, tendrá que visitar montana

  • I never really appreciated or understood just how good he was on guitar until now, more than 40 years after I started listening to him, Why??

  • @tigerblue4ever

You do own 'Shut Up and Play Your Guitar,' right...?

  • Frank Zappa made music, breathed music, and shit music. He will be always remembered as the best.

  • Seems the video of RDNZL from this set has been removed from YouTube. That was truly my favorite Zappa recording ever, and it was never released except for some low-fi bootleg recording (which I purchased). Come on, Zappa Family Trust! These recordings are pure art and belong to the world (for $15 a piece, or whatever you wish to charge). Get in the studio, remaster these tapes and make the product available! And when you come to Seattle, please bring Jean Luc Ponty out for a ZPZ RDNZL encore.

  • fuck i love george duke with frank zappa!

  • The guitar tone Frank gets on this is amazing.

  • jammed to this wif my band its an awesome song

  • if you didn't enjoy that video, and are considering a career in music, youre in trouble.

  • what an awesome fuckin band, ansley dunbar on drums, jean luc ponty on the fiddle... etc... FZ on the SG (ala angus and tony iommi....) rock on frank....

  • Damn, look at his pants!!! Fantastic!

  • @margovallen ..not Paul Humphrey , ..sorry ! Paul Humphrey is a black dude.

  • you can see the band laughing at Frank in this, and the violinist gets very impatient seemingly trying to coax the band back into the Montana motif while he solos for ages.

  • @sam31 Noone wants a drama inducer at a Zappa vid.

  • @AlfaAston123 he was very anti drugs

  • i like this old zappa where he jammed a little more like a typical band

  • A genius!!

  • Zappa is a Freakin genius when comes to composing Trumpet or Trumbone or Saxophone parts

This is my favorite of his early guitar solos it sounds soo funky, and i love how much he enjoys playing it, and how he moves his head to it

This is a pure Zappa magic moment well a 6 minutes moment

Wow Ian Underwood and Ruth Underwood on one video : )

By the way Zappa is amazingly dressed here

  • My God im in heaven, and i pay my saluts to Gil Scott Heron!!

  • Who could dislike this lets name and shame them

  • Brilliance in action.

  • I'm surprised at the ratio of likes to dislikes. Admittedly, Zappa's music is not embraced by motherlodes of rock fans. I love the album. No crowd shots?

  • Met someone from Montana today. Couldn't resist: asked her if she raised dental floss there. She hadn't heard of this. Glad I could bring her into the fold.

  • i recently heard this song for the first time on xm classic vinyl. fantastic! i don't know how i ever missed this one. thanks for the great upload!

  • dear zappa family trust, can i please have the suit frank was wearing in this video??? PLEASE!!

  • @pendeltoncky Double Plaid. Ultimate class, and impossible to locate in this place we call society.

  • @pendeltoncky I think Gail might sue you if you attempt to wear clothes whose style is ifluenced by her late husband. Or maybe you'll just get sencored...

  • @pendeltoncky hahaha even so you wouldn't be as cool as he was cause Zappa was DA MAN

  • I have seen over 200 big rock shows since 70's. and nooo one has ever made me feel like i underpaid for my tickets. Except ZAPPA SHOWS ! always left zappa shows feeling like if i had suitcase of 100 dollar bills. I would givem to the band. No groovin like zappa.....They could pull off some good shit.......miss frank

  • I grew up with Frank ( A fan)..Great post!

  • My Dad had this album.........and I Loved and still love this song! ha!

    GREAT post!!

  • Great video !

  • Great video !

  • 311 Likes, that's right, you know that's Right, it's so Right it's Right.

  • who's on drums?

  • @Django5198 This concert, Ralp Humphrey played drums but Apostrophe and the early 1970's albums were recorded with a number of drummers.

  • @Mrvoodooboy89 Cheers. I think Jim Gordon may have been one of them

  • Is this available on DVD, if so where?

  • Zappa was the other hendrix

  • @xsamitt Hendrix was the other Zappa.

  • Wow, spliffed-out clowns .... EXACTLY WHAT I NEED!

  • Jean-Luc Ponty & Ruth Underwood AND George Duke---how you gonna top that lineup ?

  • i was there :)

  • my dad looked like this in 1973 when he graduated high school...wish i grew up in that generation

  • frank zappa is such an underrated guitarist...i bet the entire solo was just freestyling theres no way he rehearsed that

  • classical music

  • Once you get past the lyrics , its a great tune !!!!!.......38 years old and still ahead of its time today !

  • Michelle obama is artificial rhonda. and husband harry as a boy. our president be bee jokin. If i don't find some woyk soon i be growin out my nakins. what you think is that shoo right ?

  • Thanks so much for putting this up !

  • Some thing about the phrasing of the solo in 2:34 to 2:39 makes me so happy and inspired.

  • @supervanhalen123

    It sounds like Jerry Garcia

  • i wonder how many people actually go to montana expecting to come across dental floss tycoons?

  • Just Me and the Pygmy pony over by the Dental Floss Bush!

  • That was SWEET! While I certainly respect Hendrix, Page, Clapton, et al, my personal opinion is that FZ was about the best guitarist I ever had the pleasure of seeing/hearing. Thanks for sharing.

  • Frank Zappa would have been 70 today. We miss you FZ

  • Happy Birthday Frank Zappa!

  • does anyone have the music for the lead guitar part.........................this is the music I love , do we have to wait 50 years before we see young musicians advancing on Franks input to it all.

  • I probably watch this video 2 or 3 times a month, and every time I am completely stunned. This is one of the greatest solos known to man. So much passion between those fingers and strings.

  • WOW! Thank you!

  • That's the stupidest lyrics ever written for one of the greatest FZ song(as far as music goes).By the way the drummer plays the intro differently(the solo part at the beginning) than Chester Thompson on the other video. I guess FZ didn't write all the parts down.

  • @lucancherby Sigh....

  • I Attended that consert in Stockholm 1973! Awesome Gig!

  • It's Frank Zappa Friday!

My favorite day of the week.

  • Zappa is the fuckin man

  • Is such brilliance anywhere to be found today?

  • 1,58 to 5,50 to my Friend Anas A

  • haha one person hit disLike on accident

  • very best performance of frank zappa

  • Any reference to Frank's importance, no matter how high it may be, is an understatement.

  • George Duke, JeanLuc Ponty...Classic. Zappa brought out real pro's on his circuit and in the studio. What a non-conformist!!

  • it's so weird i can't find the album version anywhere on youtube....

  • I gotta get me one a those green plad sport coats!

  • my fuckn fuck ...so so sooooo solid

  • i was a teenager and heard something from Zappa and thought it sucked. rofl. don't know what it was. funny how very small exerp of something skews your judgment. this gentleman is amazing . 30 years of not revisiting him till now. his music really blows me away. funny i have loved many sound alike bands and listening to him who started it all just satisfies something deep in me. this man will never be off my playlist. :D.

  • @hawkzeyes better late then never

  • What a great guitar solo.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Thanks! I never got to see Zappa, but I caught Jean-Luc Ponty at the Paramount in Seattle in I think 1986.

  • Just goes to show that Frank was not only a great composer but a fantastic guitarist as well!

Not to mention a snappy dresser!!

  • Classic Zappa...at 1:15 those facial expressions...the mad scientist...

And that guitar solo is blistering....the whole song turns into this bad ass funk jam when he starts firing up his guitar with help from Duke and Fowler......Zappa on a wah pedal is a force of nature...Long Live F.Z.!!!!!!

  • even someone who knows nothing about guitars can sit through a Zappa solo and smile. Sure they may not even know it was a smile but if they're not smiling its cause they never do. But I really like the lyrics! They bring contment and peace...

  • my dad use to sing this to me :]

  • Love this song !

By myself I wouldn't have no boss ...

  • So many great lineups.... so many great compositions.... Love this.

  • this man had more creativity in one little finger than the entire music industry today.

shut up and play yer guitar!! love it! 2:00 ......

  • haha, good led zep impression.

  • An underrated musical genius. But not underrated by me.

  • I really think his genius and talent got clouded over by the insanity lyrics/person.

  • Doesn't get much better than this!

  • best guitarist ever! amazing solo this is the best ive ever heard!

  • Comment removed

  • This version seemed a little more funky than usual.

  • I think you might have George Duke's Clavinet work to thank for that.

  • I've been watching montana videos for roughly two hours now; i've never seen this one before now, and Frankly there's something unusually special about his solo here.

  • I love nights like that.

  • Great stuff, really enjoyed this! Thanks for posting! Took me back to when I was a long haired student m-a-n!

  • Ah ah...ok, perfect! ;)

  • I enjoy watching and listening to Frank Zappa play the guitar more than Hendrix, more than anyone..

  • ballsy statement of which I agree 100% - no disrespect to Jimi. Frank was monumental in 800 differenty ways and is probably teaching the good lord how to play the kazoo as we speak.

  • Good song

  • i love his phrasing when he's soloing with the guitar.

  • Where to get bees this time year ? This has been debated for centuries, and the main reason that there are relatively few dental floss tycoons in Montana.

  • Even though he's-a-bit-dinky-to-be-slappin'-a-big-saddle-or-blanket-on-anyway ...

  • Happy Mezzo of Zappadan to all. May Frank be with you.

  • Big bonuses for dental floss tycoons - if they do guitar solos!

  • Nur Geil er war kein Genie er war GOTT Persönlich

  • So inspiring

  • I've gotta move to Montana, this is the only career option I have left. Plus, I really need the wax

  • Where are you going to get the bees this time of year?

Can't become a Dental Floss Tycoon without the bees.

  • That's what they've been telling me my entire life, that you can't be a dental floss tycoon without the wax. I've set out to prove them wrong.

  • I use a plastic dental floss with spearmint favoring!? But that's just me....

  • I hear they're all up in Montana. You gotta move there if you want bees.

  • I fucking loves Overnite Sensation.

  • Never will be another like him. Probably his best line-up along with the Petite Wazoo crew. Music has been quite dull with out him pushing the envelope. We have truly been blessed.

  • Damn I miss him. =(

  • He's nuts!! soooo good!

  • Rockin'....in a turtle neck....fuckin right ;)

  • lo stimo trp

  • Absolutely fantastic. Yippee ti yo ti yaay.

  • never ending guitar solo, love it!!

  • Wow! Eight and a half minutes just went by and I went "WTF, that was a short version!!!" Then I checked the time ... XD When does that happen in a song these days ...

  • @heyawhaw well, when are songs anywhere past 2 minutes these days?

  • @heyawhaw No that's right, today its short "fast food" songs that seem to last an eternity!

  • @Letviets

yeah, haha, and when that 2 minute song finally is over there is 20 more that sound like it's from the same mold.
