Yes, that looked like a german cross not a nazi symbol. That cross predates WWII by several centuries. Was that Sillem's black or green? Its hard to tell the color in the video.
German doesn't mean Nazi, & Nazi doesn't mean German. It looks like an Iron Cross. Lot of history to its use well before Hitler's government came about. Peace & Freedom
where can i buy sillem's? today is the first day i have ever tried smoking pipe tobacco to see if i can use it as an alternative to smoking cigs and i have to say i like it alot im going to stop smoking cigs and just smoke pipe tobacco... i got 2 pipes now
On my first visit to Sri Lanka , I noticed there were swastikas everywhere! When I asked around, it turns out that it is an ancient symbol that was copied by the Nazis (and mirror-imaged)
swastika is taken by the germans from the aryan tribes of the persiansm the persians where the first to pride themselves as aryans and being that the nazis prided themselves as aryans it seems apropriate that they used that symbol, however the symbol gets a bad rep now even the term aryan gets a bad rep now when it is simply a lingustic cultreral term for early caucasian peopels of aryanic languages, or culture such as east indians persians ect, even buddhists use the swastika
god damnit <.< not everything with a cross on it is a nazi artifact, only because it is made in germany doesnt mean hitler smoked it. i know u dont think that either but its kinda annoying. dont get me wrong i love your videos. good one like always
that pipe you're smoking is just like what i'm looking for, who is it made by? i'm definitely gonna have to try that tobacco, i'm part german so the fact that it comes from Germany gives me great incentive to try it out myself.
I have had mixed experiences with local tobaccos. I remember a friend from Brasília visited me and brought me some from a tobacconist there. He's not a smoker and didn't know what to buy. The tobacco was surprisingly good - in fact, when I last visited Brasília, I was disappointed that the shop had closed. OTOH, recently, craving some English smoke, I saw a "Latakia" house blend in a local store and got it. Not only didn't it have any Latakia, but it was anise-flavored - and yes, dry! Yuck!!!
My local tobacconist keeps the bulk of their blends in their walk-in humidor (intended for cigars) in bags and sets out only smaller amounts in airtight glass jars. I think they may also keep some sort of humidification device in the jars but I'm not sure. Perhaps other stores should follow this lead? At any rate I have never received tobacco from there that was dried out, although I have only tried they;re more popular blends as well.
By the way, I have been thinking of doing some pipe videos myself. If I choose to go that route I am highly considering the title "Pipe Smoking Hermit" for myself, based on our conversation the other day, haha. Just thought you'd like to know.
Many, many pipe smokers (including myself, long ago) start with Captain Black because it smells good to untrained noses, it's cheap and easy to find. But it also nearly made me give up pipes because of tongue bite - I thought it was "normal". Now I know Captain Black is foul tobacco with a lot of artificial flavoring and fragrance to disguise its bad quality, and also that it has a lot of chemicals to make it appear "fresh". It's those chemicals that cause the tongue bite. Avoid it!
i've only been smoking for a little over a week so i don't think i'm ready for an english blend just yet. could you recommend a good aromatic blend that's not too pricey?
Well, it may be great, but I think Phelix wants a brand or blend with the advantages of Captain Black, without the disadvantages. It should be readily available (which Boswell is not), cheap, yet decent. Remember, he's a starter and has plenty of time to refine his taste - that's not *yet* a priority. I think one of the closest bets to those requirements would be the Borkum Riff line, which theoretically is in the same market niche as Capt.Black, but is MUCH more honest tobacco.
Its an Iron cross...which was a german symbol and medal awarded for bravery over a hundred years before the nazis were even thought of...first awarded 10 March 1813....all of german history did not fall between 1933-1945..
It's not an Iron Cross. It doesn't look anything like an Iron Cross. Put your glasses on, Field Marshall.
It's the emblem and hallmark of Sillems, an age-old German silversmith, the only one that still makes hand-wrought silver snuff-boxes as well as luxury silver lighters.
I think you sir need to have your lens checked...of course its the emblem of Sillems.....made in germany...the comment was made in the video that it reminded him of something from the nazi area...BECAUSE IT LOOKS ALMOST exactly LIKE an iron cross...which is what he was referring to ....this is the 2nd time i have had to correct u ...i think u will remember the first...."If you want peace prepare for war" ...remember that? you are french ..retreat....leave the fighting to us warriors.. .cheers

Not yet, is it good?
PipeFriendCHS 2 years ago
Idk. I just ordered a tin of it with the black. I wanted to get Dunhill's London blend but I couldn't and this seemed similar enough. We will see...
dstein6674 2 years ago
Hi,
here is the meaning of the anchor cross of Sillim's:
The cross cercelée is a cross which has its ends curving around both ways, like a ram's horns.
The meanings of the Sillim's colors:
Silver is in the myths the color of the moon, Saphir means the saturn.
Cheers, Dieter

^edit: Silem's Black
eugebae 2 years ago
I have to agree with Pipefriend. Silem's is a good aromatic. It doesn't leave that boozey after taste that some aromatics leave.
It's like PF described, marshmallow, or blue cotton candy with an English twist.
Smells like candy right out of the beautiful tin.
eugebae 2 years ago
Good video. I was about to message you in reference to Sillem's Black to see if you were still smoking it. I wanted to try an aromatic with latakia.
By the way do you still stand by Boswell's chocolate cream?
