@yascumbag That is "Rotor wash" it's the effect of the blade tip condensating the mioster in the air due to an increace in pressure on lift off and in flight. you can see it was a humid day in that scene. I remember working on the longbows and the morning flights would show the rotor wash all the time. pretty cool looking...

Actually, if Afgahnis shot down the helicopters, then they used unguided RPGs, rather than the expensive homing missiles like Sidewinders and Stingers. Mi-24 Hinds were in fact equipped with advanced missile/radar jamming and flares. Also, it has a steel outer shell, which while ineffective against RPG anti-tank rockets, most likely worked wonders against the majority of flak and bullets.

The Mi-24 Hind D is not a "pure" combat helo. It was the first helo to drop bombs from the "wings", it can carry at least a squad or 2 of infantry into battle, can be utilized as a heavy lift aircraft, and the last time I checked it was still the fastest helo in forward flight. Meanwhile the Apache and its Longbow variant are "pure" combat helos and cannot be as utilitarian as the Hind D. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

c'mon guys... this is an excellent helicopter but nowhere near apache/tiger/a-129/ah-1z... full of analog instruments, poor night vision equipment, no thermal vision, no HMD, no turret mounted gun (only 14,5mm)... that's why russia is trying to replace it with mi-28 wich is very close to ah-64a.
it's simply outdated, reached it's limit. I'm not saying it's not lethal but it's very vulnerable if matched against high tech equipped adversary. Russians should replace it with great Ka-50/52.
I think you should study it better! No turret mounted gun??? Mi-24D (one of the most massive-produced types) 4-barrel 12,7 turret based gun and the other one Mi-24P non-turret 2-barrel 30-mm gun. NO where near apache??? insane??? even the cruising speed of the Mi is 270 km/h while apache has only 165 km/h and it's not armored!
12,7 is turret mounted machine-gun, useless in engaging modern armored vehicles , modern helicopters have at least 20mm HMD slaved gun (apache 30mm). even the most modern versions of mi-24 (like mi-24v) are almost blind at night. ah-64d longbow is somewhat slower than ah-64a and mi-24 because of the mast with radar... but that radar gives them complete situational awareness and fire&forget capability. max speed is far from being a key factor in real battle.
1. About radar! "complete situational awareness" - I wouldn't be so sure about it!
2. There are no means to replace the Mi, they are not outdated, they are just used in a wrong way. You shouldn't compare it just with the Longbow. It's like a hybrid between AH-64 and UH-60!
3. I already told that there is a 30-mm version of Mi, 12,7-mm can't be used against a tank but there are different tasks for it!
apache is integrated in so called 'digital battlefield' wich means that it can share sensor data with other platforms in real time. longbow gives apache unique capability to engage non-line of sight targets. I know that there is mi-24 version with 23mm and 30mm gun but it is fixed, not in HMD slaved turret. Ka-50/52 is the future, I hope that Russia will see that.
If you put so many hopes into a turret mounted 30mm gun then instead of Ka-50/52 why not use Mi-28??? And about the "digital battlefield" - I wouldn't rely on it in case of intensive jamming!
Ka-50/52 is more advanced airfarme design than mi-28, smaller target with smaller RCS and IR signature, with more advanced AT system... Sensors used in digital battlefield have high resistance to any countermeasures deployed by potential enemies. And Russian army clearly demonstrated in war with Georgia that electronic warfare is something that they have to work on; Georgian BUK surface to air system (btw, produced by Russia )was operational until the end of war, hitting Russian jets...
The 12.7mm is ver effective against many vehicles,it can go through the tops of many tanks,and can go through many other vehicles such as a typicall M113.
Apache can not be equal or better armored than mi-24. AH-64 has weak protection, mostly against small arms fire (kevlar plates), but against heavy machine gun fire Apache has not chances. Also apache is defenceless against MANPAD anti-air missiles like "Igla" or "Stinger". Hind is protected against MANPAD. In Afghanistan Mi-24s were equiped with anti-MANPAD system "Lipa" that combined flares and IR-jammer. "Lipa" reduced Stinger''s effectiveness to 10-15%, Only few Mi-24 were downed with MANPAD!
The Apache has 2 inch Thick Tungsten-Carbonate plating surrounding vital areas, 20mm Resistant Cockpit Glass, and employs one of the most advanced(and expensive) Survivability suites to take flight. (A smaller version of what protects Air Force One). Your facts WERE true for Block I Apaches, but they have been significantly Upgraded with Block II. The new Block III apaches will be even better.
ukrainesuperpower87 acts like Apaches don't even have protection against SAM's and similar AA systems. The Apache was armed since day one with IR Jamming equipment and IR Absorbent Material, as well as Chaff and Flare dispensers. Remember the Afgan-Soviet War? You guys lost more Hinds than we lost in the stock market this year. The Apache and Hind are two different aircraft, which cannot be compared. Apache = BMW, outperforms, reliable, maintainable. Hind = Hummer, goes anywhere til it breaks.
True, the Apache is the king of the gun ships. The Hind however is less a helicopter gunship and rather more an armored personnel carrier that flies. Speaking as an American (who was introduced to it when he saw "Red Dawn" in 1985), it has my respect.

Ich liebe diese "Hirschkuh" schon seit dem ich sie das erste Mal zu DDR-Zeiten fliegen sehen durfte.
Hätte ich die Kohle,so würde ich mir wohl so einen Heli mit Personal kaufen,und dann das Fliegen erlernen.
2Mann Besatzung plus 8Infanteristen in einem Kampfhubschrauber--->Einfach genial !

The Mi-24 Hind D is not a "pure" combat helo. It was the first helo to drop bombs from the "wings", it can carry at least a squad or 2 of infantry into battle, can be utilized as a heavy lift aircraft, and the last time I checked it was still the fastest helo in forward flight. Meanwhile the Apache and its Longbow variant are "pure" combat helos and cannot be as utilitarian as the Hind D. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

It was the fastest helicopter until 1986 when it's record was broken by a Westland Lynx.
as far as it being able to hold troops....USELESS! Even in Afghanistan pilots always preferred to fly it "light" and they also removed the troop area armor.

c'mon guys... this is an excellent helicopter but nowhere near apache/tiger/a-129/ah-1z... full of analog instruments, poor night vision equipment, no thermal vision, no HMD, no turret mounted gun (only 14,5mm)... that's why russia is trying to replace it with mi-28 wich is very close to ah-64a.

it's simply outdated, reached it's limit. I'm not saying it's not lethal but it's very vulnerable if matched against high tech equipped adversary. Russians should replace it with great Ka-50/52.

I think you should study it better! No turret mounted gun??? Mi-24D (one of the most massive-produced types) 4-barrel 12,7 turret based gun and the other one Mi-24P non-turret 2-barrel 30-mm gun. NO where near apache??? insane??? even the cruising speed of the Mi is 270 km/h while apache has only 165 km/h and it's not armored!

12,7 is turret mounted machine-gun, useless in engaging modern armored vehicles , modern helicopters have at least 20mm HMD slaved gun (apache 30mm). even the most modern versions of mi-24 (like mi-24v) are almost blind at night. ah-64d longbow is somewhat slower than ah-64a and mi-24 because of the mast with radar... but that radar gives them complete situational awareness and fire&forget capability. max speed is far from being a key factor in real battle.

1. About radar! "complete situational awareness" - I wouldn't be so sure about it!
2. There are no means to replace the Mi, they are not outdated, they are just used in a wrong way. You shouldn't compare it just with the Longbow. It's like a hybrid between AH-64 and UH-60!
3. I already told that there is a 30-mm version of Mi, 12,7-mm can't be used against a tank but there are different tasks for it!

apache is integrated in so called 'digital battlefield' wich means that it can share sensor data with other platforms in real time. longbow gives apache unique capability to engage non-line of sight targets. I know that there is mi-24 version with 23mm and 30mm gun but it is fixed, not in HMD slaved turret. Ka-50/52 is the future, I hope that Russia will see that.

If you put so many hopes into a turret mounted 30mm gun then instead of Ka-50/52 why not use Mi-28??? And about the "digital battlefield" - I wouldn't rely on it in case of intensive jamming!

Ka-50/52 is more advanced airfarme design than mi-28, smaller target with smaller RCS and IR signature, with more advanced AT system... Sensors used in digital battlefield have high resistance to any countermeasures deployed by potential enemies. And Russian army clearly demonstrated in war with Georgia that electronic warfare is something that they have to work on; Georgian BUK surface to air system (btw, produced by Russia )was operational until the end of war, hitting Russian jets...

Max speed is a very real factor.
The 12.7mm is ver effective against many vehicles,it can go through the tops of many tanks,and can go through many other vehicles such as a typicall M113.

Apache can not be equal or better armored than mi-24. AH-64 has weak protection, mostly against small arms fire (kevlar plates), but against heavy machine gun fire Apache has not chances. Also apache is defenceless against MANPAD anti-air missiles like "Igla" or "Stinger". Hind is protected against MANPAD. In Afghanistan Mi-24s were equiped with anti-MANPAD system "Lipa" that combined flares and IR-jammer. "Lipa" reduced Stinger''s effectiveness to 10-15%, Only few Mi-24 were downed with MANPAD!

The Apache has 2 inch Thick Tungsten-Carbonate plating surrounding vital areas, 20mm Resistant Cockpit Glass, and employs one of the most advanced(and expensive) Survivability suites to take flight. (A smaller version of what protects Air Force One). Your facts WERE true for Block I Apaches, but they have been significantly Upgraded with Block II. The new Block III apaches will be even better.

The Apache was armed since day one with IR Jamming equipment and IR Absorbent Material, as well as Chaff and Flare dispensers. Remember the Afgan-Soviet War? You guys lost more Hinds than we lost in the stock market this year. The Apache and Hind are two different aircraft, which cannot be compared. Apache = BMW, outperforms, reliable, maintainable. Hind = Hummer, goes anywhere til it breaks.

True, the Apache is the king of the gun ships. The Hind however is less a helicopter gunship and rather more an armored personnel carrier that flies. Speaking as an American (who was introduced to it when he saw "Red Dawn" in 1985), it has my respect.
