Thanks for the reply. Are yours regular P-90s or the '50s low winds? Based on the tones you're getting, my guess is that they are regular winds. Btw, I hope you're doing better...didn't you post that you were having some neurological issues that kept you from playing? Hope you're well.
Hey John,I've been listening to you since you started posting, and I really dig your playing and your sound. I'm very interested in learning more about your amp. I see it goes from 10,2,1/4 watt-what setting do you usually play it on for your videos? Is the natural overdriven sound you get at "bed room" levels,or does it need to be loud? I've got some great amps, but too loud for home use unless I put an pedal in front of them. Are they the original tubes, and speaker? Thanks, Cheers
@leftystrat62 Thanks for the kind words. In all my videos the amp is in the 10 w setting, apart from "Gibson 1956 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue" (The one where my friend plays too), where I am using the lowest power setting. Sound in the lower power settings really is true natural valve overdrive... The only difference is there is a touch more gain in the lower settings, and obviously the speaker has less of an influence on the tone in the lower power settings (no speaker distortion etc).
@leftystrat62 in the first two videos I am using the stock speaker, but in the other videos it has been changed to a celestion blue, which I have always ended up putting in everything I've ever owned! Regarding the valves, none of them are stock...Mullards and telefuncken in the preamp and phase inverter, and a Philips 7581a in the power amp. It's worth fiddling around, as the amp is very responsive to changes in the valves. You should also note that with the blue speaker it can be very loud!
@johnbeloe John, I love JAN-Phillips 6L6WGBs as the power tube in Romany Plus amps, and hopefully will have a new Plus in the next couple of months. What's the difference between these and the 7581a valve? I'm reading that 7581a valves have a bit more headroom, more clean power, and a slightly bigger low end. What would you say from your experience of them?
@HeartfeltDawn You're right, the Philips 7581a does have quite a bit more headroom/clean power, and slightly bigger low end. In fact, it is a bigger sounding tube in general than the WGBs. Another thing to note is that it is significantly louder. However, I would say the standout characteristic of the 7581a is clarity... it is unbelievably detailed and clear, and VERY unforgiving to any sloppy playing. The WGB is sweeter, slightly warmer sounding valve overall, and has a wonderful break up.
great video- thanks. just a question are the LOLLARs hum cancelling?

Those Lollars sound absolutely kick ass. How much improvement did you notice over the stock Gibson P-90s?

@jcshirke BIG improvement - if you're thinking about it, take the plunge - you won't regret it!
