I recall an interview [?] some yrs. ago the KINKS gave on PBS [?] they actually wanted to be an American R & B rock band like the Stones but Ray [Davies] bemoaned the fact he didn't have the "right" voice for the part like Mick did. The band evolved into their own sound, but the roots are American. As another poster stated: Brit bands wanted 2 sound American or Canadian. They definitely had an edgier sound that the Beatles didn't have until much later. Im sure the Beatles listened 2 the Kinks
The full impact of the Kinks is still yet to be recognized. They were in a sense, a combination of deep satirical political statements, (almost Dylan-like), and at the same time, great R and R musicians, with the greats, such as The Who, Stones, Yardbirds, etc. Great talent from the U.K., as always. We dug you guys in the States.
The Kinks are the Fathers of Loud Rock!! Absolutely love the Kinks drumm sound. Louder than the Beatles thank you very much! You get a variety of beats so creativ e and aggresive at the same time! Oh and what about those early distortions!!!! Actually The Kinks influenced The Yardbirds instead! Que Viva Los Kinks!!!
The Beatles kicked the door down, The Kinks walked through and became the greatest of 'em all....know what you mean about them meaning a lot to you....same here....
Sometimes I used to feel like these guys were right in my mind, never mind reading it. This was like direct relativity/relevance, not just some hip thoughts filtered through a bunch of showbiz. My favorite (favourite) UK
Whiz you are so right, cant explain it ,these guys got me through my schooldays, they took me in my head places no other group/person whatever could. The kinks mean a lot to me.
the order of great song writers from the english invasion...john/paul.. keith/mick pete townshed..ray davies...then lastly bowie.. ray's songwriting is pure gold for those day's AND well into the 70's which can't really be said for the others cept pete for a few.
Before the Who hit it big the Kinks had the rawest sound around. Check out their "Melbuorne Hillbillies" album from the 70's. it's as good as anything out now.
i can't help thinkin the song "i gotta groove" from zeppelin..is 100% influenced if not totally ripped off from this!!,.,,,than again im pretty high
