  • This was really sad because it was rumored that she was AMAZING in rehearsals :(

  • aww i think the best thing we can get out of this video is knowing the ryan seacrest is a sweetie <3 bahaha

  • lacks the feeling, doesn't feel from the heart.....

  • only good actress can sing this song easily... she still look like she had no clue about the song whatsoever..

  • @pinkdomingoes78 only probalum shes a singer not an actress

  • Besides I don't ever see anyone else on American Idol taking on any of Madonna's songs? It took balls and she did it!

  • I thought she did it beautifully three years ago. And listening to it now, its still an amazing performance. Heart and soul shining right through, isnt that what its all about? Passion?! I love her, I still love her!

    F#@k Simon!

  • Paula has got to be kidding. How many times has she actually sang LIVE in her career..just for starters. Gotta love Simon for being the voice of reason for once.

  • At least she realised her mistake and stopped. She was off key and corrected it by starting over, which, I admire her for. After all, it is not an easy song to sing.

The judge who told her to never start then stop is slightly stupid.

If Brooke could have made it back into key without stopping, than good for her, but I doubt the Brooke or the judge herself would have wanted to hear that song sung off key the whole way through.

  • Every professional should know to keep going and NEVER stop during the song.

  • Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote this song for the play Evita. It's about Eva Peron, wife to the president of Argentina. The song was NOT written specifically for Madona or the movie! It was part of a musical. The song is at the end of the play when Eva is dying of ovarian cancer and she realized that her husband really does love her. All the years they were married she thought he only married her for what she could help him achieve. Some people really need more education and culture before commenting!

  • @lori57703 'You Must Love Me' was written especially for the '96 film. It wasn't in the original West End musical. Although the musical's about Eva Peron, if Webber knew Madonna had been cast he may well have written the song with her voice in mind.

The song is begging her husband to really be in love with her; not her realising it. They both knew they were using each other to get power and money, but when she's dying she realises she needs him.

I'd check your facts before lambasting others.

  • @EBraefield Yes, I believe that's true...I saw "Evita" in 1975, the play...I certainly do not recall "You Must Love Me" being in it. But I was only 10 at the time :~) I do know that Evita had a huge impact on me, musically. Beautiful story, too.

  • um the man who explained it to her wrote the song so im pretty sure he gave her the right explanation lol

  • when the man explained the song to her he gave her the wrong explanation he told her that the song was about a dying woman telling her husband to love her but it is actually about Eva Peron the first lady of argentina who was dying and telling the people of argentina to love her

  • I wonder why they let her sing this on this competition. Very elementary ! Sorry to say but it is only my opinion. (Bad phrasing, intonation and ugh)

  • This is a hard song to sing imo, so I give her kudos for trying but definitely not her type of song.

I disagree with his interpretation of it though. I feel like the song's more about her realizing Peron loved her all along because of what he did when she was no longer of use to him, then her wanting him to love her in her weakness. Feel free to disagree, that's just what I think.

  • she cannot sing! :-(

  • he's thinking in his head "mwuhahaha i don't care because i'm making money!"

then all phantom phans bash in their heads as he sits down to present us with Love Never Dies

    great. . .

  • song should have been called "you must vote for me". desperate performance

  • Not a pop song, not meant to be sung by a pop singer.

  • @spg33192 just a correction... she's not a pop singer. she's a country singer. o.O

  • @cheavygozon Actually, her genre is pop/indie.

  • @cheavygozon Country? Pop? What?! She's Brooke White! Her personality is too huge to be placed in such a small box!

  • I still have no idea what Paula was saying....

  • god i remember watching this, i gasp soo loud when she stopped lmao.

  • listening to this, i just can't believe that carly went out that week instead of brooke....ridiculous.

  • Good on Her. Screw what Paula said.

  • Just Beautiful! great voice! She was just a little bit nervous, but doesn't change the fact that she has a beautiful voice.

  • Always better to restart the song, than embarrass yourself by continuing the song badly. Although I agree the song sounded better when Madonna sang it, she did well.

  • Only Madonna can perform this song. She's the one it was written for. It's designed for Madonna's voice. This girl just doesn't have the same emotional attachment to it. Madonna sang this in the movie AND at live at the Oscars. It will always be Madonna's song.

  • @sparkleboo1980 true.

  • I like her version better than Madonna -

  • No, no, no... What she did was actually pretty smart, verging on brilliant. Instead of continuing the song, humming or mumbling like an idiot would, she requested a restart with a rational amount of poise and she recovered.

  • this bitch is really bad

  • this bitch was really bad

  • 5:38 nice move, but it failed

  • OMG, I remember this. I felt so embarrassed for her. I had a hard time watching this over again.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • this is a piece of shit

  • Aww.. she looked so sad at the end..

  • Haha nobody cares what Paula ever says!

  • i really love the brooke of You're so vain or Love is a battlefield, but this is not the kind of song for her

  • bad

  • I admire her for asking to start over. It was the right thing to do, she was off-key and wasn't going to be able to get back on-key.

  • i think it was best for her to not stop

  • It made sense for her to choose this song. Brooke had very little range and most of ALW songs require quite a bit of range. Madonna, whether you adore her or hate, also does not have that much range, though she sings her range very well. The problem, quite simply, was Brooke f*%cked up the song.

  • -_-

  • Don't like it...

  • She too young to feel a true love, a sweet and hurt, so she can't compare with Madonna. Madonna is QUEEN !

  • check out "madonna cardiff you must love me" and you'll see and hear how this song must be sung. madonna gives the song intensity. and she has a much better voice there than this girl. much better indeed.

  • yeah. madonna wins.

  • you must love me have love, emotion

    broke no sings with madonna.

  • she's pretty good but madonna's version is better, sorry please don;t kill me for saying it.

  • This is the best version I heard of this song (I hate this song) I enjoyed it

  • She murdered this song. Madonna's version was the best.

    PS: 1,000th comment W00T!

  • Well the song was written especially for Madonna and she has totally different voice

  • it wasn't written FOR Madonna but for the film version, as is the tradition whenever they make a film version of an ALW musical. They add a new song.

And anyone who knows and loves the Evita musical knows that every song is connected musically to the others..often adapting melodic lines from other songs in the musical with new lyrics ("She's a Diamond" and "Rainbow High" for example). "You Must Love Me" sticks out like a sore thumb and I am not happy they have added it to the new cast

  • @supehr It was originally sung by Elaine Paige

  • @rhyk uuu it's sad how you know nothing :)

  • @rhyk You must love me was origanlly sung by Madonna actully! Andrew wrote that song speacially for the movie!

  • @supehr i dont think it was...evita was a stage musical waaaayyy before a film was considered...both meryl streep and madonna were up for the role in the film. :)

  • @LittleMissLar yeah but there was no "you must love me" on stage, it is a song from the movie check it somewhere

  • she´s not the type for singing musicals...

  • the thing is.. though.. she this song wasn't in the musical.. it was for written for Madonna who doesn't even have a musically trained voice herself. : )

i think that Madonna has such an individual voice that it is hard for anyone else to sing her songs...

  • shes demented, giving me goosebumps

  • has problems with high singing parts - i think shes a light coloratura mezzosoprano.

because her voice is very light and agile, but also not very high and husky (typical for a deeper voice)

  • That's actually rather good! If you really want to hear it done right though, by the woman it was written for, check out Madonna performing it in CARDIFF on the sticky and sweet tour. She sounded amazing.

  • This was evidenced by how Seacrest and the judges spent three minutes castigating her about it in between long awkward gaps of silence.

Honestly it was more awkward than watching Jason Biggs trying to untangle himself from a tube sock with his parent standing just two feet away.

    Yikes.

  • Brooke< I came back here to compare you with this years contestants. If you were on this year, you would win hands down.

Nobody sings this song better than you did. I love your voice. (from a 60 year old father of a future American Idol contestant). Best wishes.

  • What an idiot. Who wouldn't research a song before performing it in front of its composer? I mean, at least youtube the damn thing. Plus, cheese. That is all.

  • her studio version was a million times better, i liked her,

  • It is so frightening to mess up on stage. I give her credit for not breaking down.

  • Ur absolutly right Hrmad. Like Madonnas version best.

  • She has a beautiful voice, but I'm sorry guys she didn't do a good job with this song...it lacks everything!! I had the chance to see madonna perform this song live 4 times and she really kicked asses!! keep on singing "love is a battlefield" girl

  • :)

    im glad someone knows evita.

  • LOVE that movie!!! Most people would have appreciated her performance much more if they would have seen the movie or the play

  • Ya deffinately

  • I'm a diehard fan of the movie and her performance made me want to vomit.

The song (the soundtrack cut anyway) is the most simply worded, composed and accompanied in the entire movie because it's the only point in the story where she's letting herself be completely honest and vulnerable. Her cheeseball acting aside, I have no idea whey they felt it was necessary to add strings and winds behind the gorgeous piano.

  • well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I thought it was a great choice of instrumentation.

  • d most beautiful rendition of this song is by Lea Salonga. u can feel her emotion reaching to your heart. no wonder lea remains one of broadway's elite stars.... but Brooke is ok too... she only lack some confidence on stage i think.

  • i think she handled da startin ova rly well!

  • Andrew Lloyd Webber DID compose the song for the EVITA movie. He won an oscar for it in 1997.

    Get your information right!

  • i was really shaking hearing her.

    i felt her heart singing.

she did so well. except for the 'starting over'

  • I think she did really cool.

Greeting s from Europe, Romania, Baby.

  • what's wrong with her, this is the second time she committed a mistake..huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhu

  • That was so funny.

  • This is my favorite performance of season 7! I still can't get it out of my head.

  • Brooke's confidence was gone when she sang this song. It makes my heart hurt because she has such a wonderful talent and just doesn't believe in herself.

  • when u mess up u never should stop. U live and learn. This song isn't my fav but its good. She sang very nice but Madonna can sing better.

  • She doesn't sound that bad... Lea Salonga and Madonna have her beat though... by a large margin.

  • I prefer Madonna

  • That wasnt a good song choice for her...it was way too soft, and low for her vocal range....

  • Yeah she should've chosen a different song.

  • my favorite Idol that season and my favorite song from my favorite musical originally sung by my favorite singer!! *in heaven*

  • she apearantly didn't realize the music should follow her and not the other way around...

  • I think that she did really well with this song!!

  • those ppl waving their hands

annoy the shit out of me.

  • it's great!!

  • She got by this week on sympathy alone, and when Carly was voted off instead of Syesha or Jason, people got angry at Brooke and she went home the next week...

  • it was very emotional

  • guys there is this talented Philippine singer named Lea Salongga. Hear her version of this song. I think its far better.- Lea Salonga - You Must Love Me from Evita (live)

  • lea salonga's version is waaay better. in comparison, it's almost painful to listen to this.

  • pitchy and terrible

  • just a note: before you say that madonna slaughtered it remember that it was written for the movie so she was the only one to sing it.

I think brooke just got by in the show because shes pretty.

  • i love and adore madonna...but madonna slaughtered this song when she performed it on the oscars in 1997. brooke's performance is rather beautiful and emotional. i think she did a terrific job. i hear madonna's rendition of the song during her current tour is gorgeous though. looking forward to seeing it when she hits SF. beyond that, i think brooke did a beautiful job.

  • Do you really love and adore Madonna? I have for over 2 1/2 decades now, I am not delusional about M's vocal abilities, she isn't nor did she claim to be Barbra Streisand. BUT, I feel that this performance is her best LIVE performance EVER! We all have the right to our own opinion, but, for someone who adores her to say she slaughtered this? I'd say have you heard it on something other than You Tube, the quality of the audio and video is terrible. We're seeing her in Philly CAN'T WAIT!

  • after she restarted it was really good.

  • i love her dress!!

  • Actually, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote it for the movie version of Evita. Madonna was the first to sing it.

  • how could all you be so mean!?? i bet none of you can sing half as good as her. I bet i would've be so nervous i could've fainted. Yeah she had a bad week but almost everyone does. so don't be so mean! I don't want to be mad at you guys but a little niceness could've been better.

  • 100% agree with you!

comon people. u go on a show that is very demanding and u know for a fact millions of people are watching and not make a mistake!

    :)

  • thank you :)

  • this song.. is not for her.. it needs to have more feelings for a song like that.

  • i totally agree!

  • how do you screw up such an easy song???

  • Madonna sang this originally and it was amazing! Brooke screwed it up

  • Actually Elaine Paige sang it in the original stage version of Evita, and it is fabulous. Then Lea Solanga took it over.

  • i love andrew! he tells it like it is!

  • Yess! Andrew is fantastic. I lovee the musical Evita

  • Andrew Lloyd Webber should do what he's good at - REAL musical theatre, not these stupid "reality TV" pantomimes!

  • she should have been voted off this week

she made it to the top 5 because she started crying

    dont get me wrong

im a brooke white fan to

but this was a poor performance

  • Why were the judges being such asses waving their arms during her song?!

  • well she is doing it, i met her and she is so nice, and she did a great job, you can do it better??? do it.

  • one should never, ever start again! Very famous saying "the show muct go on!"

  • very bad.... why does she chose such a song that won an oscar???! very poor...

Madonna is the best, no one can immitate her

  • Madonna is so much better at this no one will ever be able to top her

  • no paula was right uh ave to keep going u shouldn't restart.

  • Madonna does this song better tahn anyone else

  • I am not being a hater, but I just don't think she did the song justice. I've seen the movie and the Broadway musical, and in no way did her performance have the same level of passion and talent that this song deserves. Great voice, yes. But, for this particular song, it just didn't do it for me. She was certainly emotional, but the vocals weren't great. Look it up on here, and you'll see how awesome a job madonna did with it.

  • who booed me

  • go brooke- if u look at this and remember your "buddy" from the tour? well it's me

  • Paula is so stupid...you don't just keep going when you forget the words!!! You pick up the pieces and restart!! This just shows Paula's lack of credibility as far as her musicianship goes.

  • All performers make mistakes, that she had the courage to stop and re-do it only shows what a professional she is. She shouldn't have apologized.

  • I must write oly good things about Brook???

    FKY..... Just another "wannabe"... jajajajajaja

  • jajajajajaja? isnt it hahahahahahah?

  • sorry.... in spanish is "JAJAJAJAJAJA"!!!!!

    Then: jajajaja

  • GO BROOKE WHITE

  • As far as emotion is concern - she is lagging behind the instruments. Personally, I think she relied to heavily on the lyric prompter and it wasn't reading fast enough to give her enough confidence in the song. I think the emotion she presents is completely fake.

  • this was really good! i was so glad she wasn't voted off that week!

  • This is what separates Madonna- a REAL American Idol, from just another WANNABE!

    What a fucking disgrace . . .

  • ImmortalMathias, if you dont have anything good to say, dont say anything at all!

  • I DID say something good . . . about a REAL American Idol!

  • I appreciate what you said about Madonna. But keep the comment about Brooke to yourself.

  • very agree sarah and htarnow! she robed carly's fabulous performance that night, because people felt "pity" for her when she starting to cry.

  • i LOVE the way she sang this song!!!!!!!!!

    it so emotional

  • not that great. drousy

  • i think that she did great even if she had to start over. i thought that she sang it with a lot of emotion. good job brooke.

  • I no!!!! i think Carly did a really great job and jesus christ super star is 1 of the most popular musicals ever!!!!

  • Carly probably got voted off because she sang /Jesus Christ/ Superstar. You just don't pick songs that have to do with religion.

  • hmm... she is good, but i prefer the madonna version.

  • she great. haters go away seriously! no one wants to hear it!

  • That was her best performance.

  • I agree..her best yet..great emotion. But overall she could be better if she had more confidence in herself.

  • happy birthday brooke!!

  • to all those who are wondering why Itunes disabled brooke white because she was an american idol finalist but she has an album search songs from the attic on itunes they have it

  • Even after she forgot the lyrics I think she did it well; I am glad she wasn't voted off after that night.

  • I was very suprised that she very well. She should have kept singing and not stopped though.

  • we all make mistakes, it happens people! Brooks has incredible musical talents! go brooke!

  • I totally agree GO BROOKE GO!!!

  • A clearly moving but controversial performance (due to her start-stop). I liked the bonding/banter with Andrew Lloyd Webber (very instructive). It's good to be reminded (as a viewer) that the "feeling" of the song is just as important as the "voice." Knowing the backstory, Brooke's beginning is somewhat fitting (because the character is dying/emotional) and theatrical. Paula's feedback was beneficial/on-target. Madonna made this a power-house; Brooke made this touching. Overall, a good job!

  • I'm sorry, this performance sucked ass.

And for anyone who actually thought her vocals were ANYWHERE near up to par, needs to get their damn ears checked.

Obviously the worst performance EVER on American Idol. She should've went home that night, and give Carly her top 5 spot.

  • when i heard her speak, i thought this girl's gotta have a great voice. but she's ok :(. otherwise, besides david archuleta, i think she had the greatest heart.
