I thought she did it beautifully three years ago. And listening to it now, its still an amazing performance. Heart and soul shining right through, isnt that what its all about? Passion?! I love her, I still love her!
Paula has got to be kidding. How many times has she actually sang LIVE in her career..just for starters. Gotta love Simon for being the voice of reason for once.
At least she realised her mistake and stopped. She was off key and corrected it by starting over, which, I admire her for. After all, it is not an easy song to sing.
The judge who told her to never start then stop is slightly stupid.
If Brooke could have made it back into key without stopping, than good for her, but I doubt the Brooke or the judge herself would have wanted to hear that song sung off key the whole way through.
Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote this song for the play Evita. It's about Eva Peron, wife to the president of Argentina. The song was NOT written specifically for Madona or the movie! It was part of a musical. The song is at the end of the play when Eva is dying of ovarian cancer and she realized that her husband really does love her. All the years they were married she thought he only married her for what she could help him achieve. Some people really need more education and culture before commenting!
@lori57703 'You Must Love Me' was written especially for the '96 film. It wasn't in the original West End musical. Although the musical's about Eva Peron, if Webber knew Madonna had been cast he may well have written the song with her voice in mind.
The song is begging her husband to really be in love with her; not her realising it. They both knew they were using each other to get power and money, but when she's dying she realises she needs him.
@EBraefield Yes, I believe that's true...I saw "Evita" in 1975, the play...I certainly do not recall "You Must Love Me" being in it. But I was only 10 at the time :~) I do know that Evita had a huge impact on me, musically. Beautiful story, too.
when the man explained the song to her he gave her the wrong explanation he told her that the song was about a dying woman telling her husband to love her but it is actually about Eva Peron the first lady of argentina who was dying and telling the people of argentina to love her
This is a hard song to sing imo, so I give her kudos for trying but definitely not her type of song.
I disagree with his interpretation of it though. I feel like the song's more about her realizing Peron loved her all along because of what he did when she was no longer of use to him, then her wanting him to love her in her weakness. Feel free to disagree, that's just what I think.
The track is the only song recorded for the movie that did not originate in one form or another from the original stage version of the musical. It was written specifically for the film (the director Alan Parker requested a rewrite of parts of the final scenes of the score) and was included in the stage production for the first time when the musical was revived in June 2006 at London's Adelphi Theatre.
Always better to restart the song, than embarrass yourself by continuing the song badly. Although I agree the song sounded better when Madonna sang it, she did well.
Only Madonna can perform this song. She's the one it was written for. It's designed for Madonna's voice. This girl just doesn't have the same emotional attachment to it. Madonna sang this in the movie AND at live at the Oscars. It will always be Madonna's song.
No, no, no... What she did was actually pretty smart, verging on brilliant. Instead of continuing the song, humming or mumbling like an idiot would, she requested a restart with a rational amount of poise and she recovered.
It made sense for her to choose this song. Brooke had very little range and most of ALW songs require quite a bit of range. Madonna, whether you adore her or hate, also does not have that much range, though she sings her range very well. The problem, quite simply, was Brooke f*%cked up the song.
check out "madonna cardiff you must love me" and you'll see and hear how this song must be sung. madonna gives the song intensity. and she has a much better voice there than this girl. much better indeed.
it wasn't written FOR Madonna but for the film version, as is the tradition whenever they make a film version of an ALW musical. They add a new song.
And anyone who knows and loves the Evita musical knows that every song is connected musically to the others..often adapting melodic lines from other songs in the musical with new lyrics ("She's a Diamond" and "Rainbow High" for example). "You Must Love Me" sticks out like a sore thumb and I am not happy they have added it to the new cast
The song is not written especially for Madonna, it was written for the movie (they have a lot of prospect singers for the song). She just recorded it for the movie in 1996 and made it the most popular version.

And for the first time EVER, Vodka was right while fat Randy and the Brit with Nips was wrong.

What an idiot. Who wouldn't research a song before performing it in front of its composer? I mean, at least youtube the damn thing. Plus, cheese. That is all.
She has a beautiful voice, but I'm sorry guys she didn't do a good job with this song...it lacks everything!! I had the chance to see madonna perform this song live 4 times and she really kicked asses!! keep on singing "love is a battlefield" girl
I'm a diehard fan of the movie and her performance made me want to vomit.
The song (the soundtrack cut anyway) is the most simply worded, composed and accompanied in the entire movie because it's the only point in the story where she's letting herself be completely honest and vulnerable. Her cheeseball acting aside, I have no idea whey they felt it was necessary to add strings and winds behind the gorgeous piano.
d most beautiful rendition of this song is by Lea Salonga. u can feel her emotion reaching to your heart. no wonder lea remains one of broadway's elite stars.... but Brooke is ok too... she only lack some confidence on stage i think.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Andrew Lloyd Weber had nothing to do with this song though..it was an original song written by Madonna for the "Evita" movie so ALW didn't compose it. Funny how they decided it would be suited for this night in idol songs.
Brooke's confidence was gone when she sang this song. It makes my heart hurt because she has such a wonderful talent and just doesn't believe in herself.
She got by this week on sympathy alone, and when Carly was voted off instead of Syesha or Jason, people got angry at Brooke and she went home the next week...
guys there is this talented Philippine singer named Lea Salongga. Hear her version of this song. I think its far better.- Lea Salonga - You Must Love Me from Evita (live)
i love and adore madonna...but madonna slaughtered this song when she performed it on the oscars in 1997. brooke's performance is rather beautiful and emotional. i think she did a terrific job. i hear madonna's rendition of the song during her current tour is gorgeous though. looking forward to seeing it when she hits SF. beyond that, i think brooke did a beautiful job.
Do you really love and adore Madonna? I have for over 2 1/2 decades now, I am not delusional about M's vocal abilities, she isn't nor did she claim to be Barbra Streisand. BUT, I feel that this performance is her best LIVE performance EVER! We all have the right to our own opinion, but, for someone who adores her to say she slaughtered this? I'd say have you heard it on something other than You Tube, the quality of the audio and video is terrible. We're seeing her in Philly CAN'T WAIT!
how could all you be so mean!?? i bet none of you can sing half as good as her. I bet i would've be so nervous i could've fainted. Yeah she had a bad week but almost everyone does. so don't be so mean! I don't want to be mad at you guys but a little niceness could've been better.
I am not being a hater, but I just don't think she did the song justice. I've seen the movie and the Broadway musical, and in no way did her performance have the same level of passion and talent that this song deserves. Great voice, yes. But, for this particular song, it just didn't do it for me. She was certainly emotional, but the vocals weren't great. Look it up on here, and you'll see how awesome a job madonna did with it.
Paula is so stupid...you don't just keep going when you forget the words!!! You pick up the pieces and restart!! This just shows Paula's lack of credibility as far as her musicianship goes.
As far as emotion is concern - she is lagging behind the instruments. Personally, I think she relied to heavily on the lyric prompter and it wasn't reading fast enough to give her enough confidence in the song. I think the emotion she presents is completely fake.
to all those who are wondering why Itunes disabled brooke white because she was an american idol finalist but she has an album search songs from the attic on itunes they have it
A clearly moving but controversial performance (due to her start-stop). I liked the bonding/banter with Andrew Lloyd Webber (very instructive). It's good to be reminded (as a viewer) that the "feeling" of the song is just as important as the "voice." Knowing the backstory, Brooke's beginning is somewhat fitting (because the character is dying/emotional) and theatrical. Paula's feedback was beneficial/on-target. Madonna made this a power-house; Brooke made this touching. Overall, a good job!
when i heard her speak, i thought this girl's gotta have a great voice. but she's ok :(. otherwise, besides david archuleta, i think she had the greatest heart.
This was really sad because it was rumored that she was AMAZING in rehearsals :(

how do you screw up such an easy song???
Ringlord3434 3 years ago
Madonna sang this originally and it was amazing! Brooke screwed it up
salizarrr 3 years ago
Actually Elaine Paige sang it in the original stage version of Evita, and it is fabulous. Then Lea Solanga took it over.

Andrew Lloyd Webber should do what he's good at - REAL musical theatre, not these stupid "reality TV" pantomimes!

Look it up on here, and you'll see how awesome a job madonna did with it.

go brooke- if u look at this and remember your "buddy" from the tour? well it's me
677Ace677 3 years ago
Paula is so stupid...you don't just keep going when you forget the words!!! You pick up the pieces and restart!! This just shows Paula's lack of credibility as far as her musicianship goes.
flumpton 3 years ago
All performers make mistakes, that she had the courage to stop and re-do it only shows what a professional she is. She shouldn't have apologized.

As far as emotion is concern - she is lagging behind the instruments. Personally, I think she relied to heavily on the lyric prompter and it wasn't reading fast enough to give her enough confidence in the song. I think the emotion she presents is completely fake.
Marcus1743 3 years ago
this was really good! i was so glad she wasn't voted off that week!

This is what separates Madonna- a REAL American Idol, from just another WANNABE!
What a fucking disgrace . . .

htarnowe 3 years ago
I no!!!! i think Carly did a really great job and jesus christ super star is 1 of the most popular musicals ever!!!!
Phantomlover001 3 years ago
Carly probably got voted off because she sang /Jesus Christ/ Superstar. You just don't pick songs that have to do with religion.

Overall, a good job!

brooke song was horrible she should got elimanated that week
grocks543 3 years ago
I'm sorry, this performance sucked ass.
And for anyone who actually thought her vocals were ANYWHERE near up to par, needs to get their damn ears checked.
Obviously the worst performance EVER on American Idol. She should've went home that night, and give Carly her top 5 spot.

when i heard her speak, i thought this girl's gotta have a great voice. but she's ok :(. otherwise, besides david archuleta, i think she had the greatest heart.
