  • Wow. Yeah, you master that one

  • Comment removed

  • absolute win

  • May I ask a questio? Is it possible to modify a Ludwig Speed King bass pedal and make a double bass pedal out of one with the need to buy two separate bass drums? I want to hear your take on it.

  • @444Guitarboy

I was attempting this years ago but without success. You would need a second beater to have a clamp that will fit and attach to the speed king and even then the SK may not support all the movement.Let me know how you make out.

  • Great job!

  • @GrooveDrummin This is my favorite Led Zeppelin song drum arrangement.

  • awesome! when ill reach skill to play this ill learn it from this video :D

  • best cover i've ever heard of this song, amazing!

  • Best Drummer on youtube hands down.

    You are great Dan!

  • Jimmy, Robert, and John disliked this video because they can't accept that you give Bonzo a run for his money!

  • That's a great song, and you did very well. I wonder me if you have a score of this song, if you have it, can you send it to me? Thank you

  • @palitrocha9000

I do, i bought it from Amazon. The book is called "Drum Techniques of Led Zeppelin" and has many songs in it. If you go to my site under learning - docs, scroll towards the bottom of the page and you see it there.

  • Epic! Hit for hit. Perfect man.

  • SPOT ON BRO!

  • At 1:13, is that roll hard to do? Its a very rapid roll, but is not hard and sounds "soft" as opposed to regular hits

  • @jimmyblues15

hard to align and setup into the song but not actually hard to do...i was trying to play it at the same volume Bonham did

  • @GrooveDrummin Yeah, you played the whole song very well. What is the secret to the volume of that part?

  • @jimmyblues15

    thanks! Practice dynamics.

  • @GrooveDrummin Alright. If your band still plays and you do anything in the Pittsburgh area give me hollar, because I would very much like to hear you play

  • @jazziestge0ff

the main beat or a certain part?

  • @GrooveDrummin the main beat part. like the timekeeping parts (if youd call it that)

  • @jazziestge0ff

it's the same kick pattern as "immigrant song" BUT leave out the last note.

  • 2:26...for some reason i just cant get that....HELP ha

  • @TheApostleofRock

Crash lands with the foot: like this - R (w/FOOT) LR L (w/FOOT)

    x oo x

    f - - f

  • 2: 26 awesome!

  • Awesomenesses

  • You must have killed your Achilles Tendon lol!

  • @GrooveDrummin I just saw Jun626's cover of this glorious song. He's done quite an amazing job. Now I'm watching you nail it with the drums at perfection... I'm sitting here, like, "are you kidding me, sir?" You're great, no joke.

I think both of you guys, along with jamesnorthernva (whose voice is identical to that of Plant) should do a cover of this song. It would be an astonishing YouTube event (not to mention Facebook, because I'll be spamming it like crazy on everyone's page). :D

  • Hey my friend, please "in my time of dying"

  • man thats great! awesome,,

i love running to this song on tredmill,,love it!

  • Nailed it, the kit sounds awesome too, nice one, very jealous!!! \m/

  • @dc3074771

    Thank you kindly!

  • @dc3074771 Who thinks it's easy? Hahaha, it's ridiculous when you listen to it.

  • @GrooveDrummin If you're not already in a band--you ought to be, because you are a percussive and audio GENIUS!!

  • @jeffreygaudreault

    Thank you so much!

  • really really good drum cover man.

  • Just wow. You're really good man!

  • never really liked this song... but THAT... was lovely.

  • Moocho groovey.

  • cool. indeed.

  • hell yeahhh brother ripp that shit!!!!

  • Wow, great job! Love this song.

  • evertimes when i play this, somehow my right hand & right foot were hit at the same time...

  • Great job man ! One of my top 3 fav Zep tunes !!!!

  • sick cover dude! my drummer has a ludwig classic maple kit in champagne sparkle.

he uses the 2002 cymbals as well and man they sound perfect!

hes got the same dimensions as ur kit too. what snare do you have? He has the ian paice pearl snare and it sounds friggin awesome.

  • @Zeppelindude628

That's a nice snare for sure...I am using the Ludwig LM402.

  • that was sick! :D

  • One of the many things I love about Bonzo was how his fills never got in the way of the music, and this song is a case in point... and brother, you nailed it. Respect!

  • ...best cover of this song east of the mississippi.

    nice work!!!

  • Hey thanks for this man, that was sensational. My favourite Zeppelin tune. As a 49 yr old arthritic beginner, i'd love you to do a slow mo tutorial on this! Thanks again

  • what is that fill at 1:14?

  • @Rory5421

    single strokes

  • INCREDIBLE job

  • I love this song and its feel - you got it brother - thank you

  • Love, love, love that ludwig kit! Solid drumming, sir.

What video editing program are you using to get the picture in picture effect?

  • @wjanellepercussion

Thanks a lot! Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9

  • col

  • so what do you think of the vintage emperors compared to the regular coated?

  • @basje224

The vintage have a higher tone because they are thicker plys...i like them better than the standard.

  • Great job and don't listen to the neg.

  • look at those sexy shoes

  • Tell you what

    Bonzo would be proud !

  • Great Drum set. !!!! and awesome skills !!!!

  • Amazing performance - thanks so much for the excellent video. I am a guitarist, but I always thought that the real "star" of this song was the drummer!

  • Great job and great sound man, really!

  • What a great 10 mins I just spent!!! Brilliant!

  • Amazing cover dude!

  • Awsome!

    So heavey and so tight.great.

I want to play a jam with you someday:)

  • Bro

i would love it if you would make a cover

of stairway to heaven live from the song remains the same :)

  • is that a tama imperialstar pedal? i could be wrong. if it is though, how do you like it?

  • @MLplayer78

speed king...but i've played tama pedals and i like them.

  • @GrooveDrummin Amazing, dude. Can't even tell the difference... sounds like exactly like the original. Thanks for posting, best cover on YouTube so far.

  • john bonham hit them 10x harder than that. good cover though.

  • @calvin2058

lol, you wouldn't say that if you were sitting beside my kit when i play

  • one of the best drum covers on youtube, i'm serious

  • @shavethebravedave

    thanks bro

  • @Cliner98

    Thanks bro

  • Great playing!! but I was just wondering, how i could find one of those Ludwig Classic Maple sets in that model with the one rack tom and two floor toms? I've looked all over musicians friend and the Ludwig website ect.., and i cant find it. If you could reply that would be great. Thanks

  • @basementdrumming

You could always go to your local music shop and see if they still have them or custom order the sizes you want. When I bought them Ludwig called this kit the "zep set" so maybe you could look for them by name. Keep me posted if you want. Thanks for watching!

  • Your snare sounds beautiful.

  • yeahhhhhhhh

  • Hi Dan - Just wanted to say i really dig your channel.

Really enjoyed the latest Bonza lesson, its great to be able to visualise all the parts and check it against my own technique. Always good to compare playing styles and nick bits I may otherwise have missed. Big Thanks.

  • I think you're Bonham reincarnate.

  • @GearsofWumbology

I think he practised a lot...

  • Hey Dan, first I'd like to say that I really enjoyed this cover...I know you get a ton requests but if you have time I'd really like to see your interpretation of "Good Times, Bad Times" if you ever get a chance.

  • Truly excellent job as usual Dan... cheers... Goose

  • Superb!!!

  • Awesome! Loved it.

Great drum sound and great timing/feel!

  • Hey Dan..."?" I had that guy rebuild me one of htose Speed Kings. Was yours sort of a bit too tight down at the bottom where he puts that screw through on the heal?

He told me to just keep working it and that it would loosen up a tad. My Flying Dragon is still #1

    ;p)

    Marc

  • @AldridgeHalenFreak

There are two guys renovating the SK. Mine came from Joe in New York and I love it. The screws you speak of are still original on mine and I think you got yours from the other guy. I would suggest to loosen off the new replacement lock nuts just enough to prevent friction. I crank both springs pretty much as tight as they can go. Thanks Marc.

  • @GrooveDrummin Yeah...I did that a bit with that screw. It made a large difference. On another subject I just want to say again Dan that I think you have become one of the best teachers I have ever had in a sense for helping me with my technique and learning some very cool riffs! Whenever we hear of a person that comes out of the woodwork and can do quite a bit that nobodies ever heard of... "Thats you" Dan! There is a lot presented here and I thank you! ;p)))))))))))))))

    Marc

  • Dan, could you do the 05:22 part in a slower tempo for us to learn how to do it? For me this is the trickiest part of the song...

  • @rafazeppelin

I could explain it for you...very simple just hard to pull off at this tempo.

    R-LR-LR LR-LR

    F-_ _-FF _ _-FF

Every (F) foot hit the crash simultaneously

  • @GrooveDrummin How were you able to figure that out? Thats just amazing.

  • 02:25

    nothing more....

  • I have a question for you Dan ? do you have your rack tom held by a Snare Stand or what cause im looking to get a tom mount I hear snare stands are usable but they can kill the tone?

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe

I use a Pearl opti-mount (less movement than standard rims mount). The snare stand will choke the sound but I came across a stand that doesn't kill it too bad and that's the Pearl S-2000. I still suggest getting the opti-mount however.

  • @GrooveDrummin

thanks ill look out around for an opti mount.... see this is why your my favorite Drummer on youtube not only are you amazing at playing but you actually reply to your fans when we have questions.

  • Alright! Another great lesson. ;p)

    Thanks and great job Dan!

  • Amazing sound, amazing playing, I'm proud to be one of your many subscribers Dan!

BTW, I see you've kept the Pearl beaters to put it on your Speed King ?

Take care, and keep those great videos coming! They're like sweet candy!

  • Amazing !!! your great my friend !!! best wishes, keep rocking

  • oh wow mate! one of the best rock songs ever, with one of the best drumming tracks ever by THE best rock drummer ever & you have absolutely nailed it! awesome brother, you're an inspiration, great to watch your bass pedal technique, I learnt a lot! thanks mate, keep it up!

  • Impressive as usual friend!

  • Just happened to check up on you to see if you'd done Achilles Last Stand and to my surprise, you did! And did it VERY nicely! \m/(>.<)\m/

All the best to you, sir! Everything you do is fantastic! Videos, everything! I've been playing over 20 years and am a better drummer after watching your videos and applying them.. Thank you sir and keep rockin'! Teaching my 5 year old Kashmir.. Good song to learn on me thinks..

  • at 2:32 you're better than bonham. keep postin man you're helping me improve tremendously!

  • great playing buddy, do you have your springs on your bass pedal tight ?

  • @johnr2507

yeah, as tight as it can go...Thanks!

  • There is a cymbal fill that I always have trouble with and you left it out also at 9:28. Bonzo was just better than everyone else.

  • awesome dude!

  • Amazing

  • Amazing man! truly well done! one of my favourite Zep songs and you nailed it! love the drums man! and the speed king pedal! awesome tone to your drums too! well done man!

  • awesome. love the camera angles.

  • OMG! Dan I think this 1 of the best videos you have made!!! I cant stop watching it!!! YOU ROCK!!

  • Knocked it out da park again Dan!

  • Could i request "In my time of dying" for some more of your superb bass drum action?

  • 10/10 drums performance....last Zep reunion in London would have been much better with you on the drums...the Bonzo's heavy drumming spirit is surely with you man....have fun

  • Way to go DANZO !!! This had to be one of the last masterpieces they put out, definitely one of my favs. Your playing is as fantastic as ever. Nothing says Led Zeppelin like LUDWIG and PAISTE !!!!! Love it !!

  • When the music is in the DNA that is what happens... Great!

  • i cant wait to get a ludwig so i can see if my tuning isnt as bad as it seems -_- anyway, nice cover :D

  • Fantastic performance!! Great work!!!

  • Dan ever wonder with all the ( retro muscle cars)! Why hasnt at anybody at Ludwig (retroed a Speed King)?????????????

  • o, ya i forgot, im adding 2 fav. !!!!

  • Nailed it......AWESOME ! ROCK ON ! \,,/

  • OMFG man you kick ass!! look at this: 02:26 !!! your led zeppelin and deep purple's covers are awesome! chech my videos too, we play lots of theses song on my band! congratulations again!

  • The Cover was amazing like all your videos, But since the pedal is rubbing wouldn't the bass drum head wear after a while?

  • @Hammerofthegods86

It would yes but it appears not to touch very often. So far the marks are minimal. Thanks again for watching!

  • HOLY SHIT MAN YOU FUCKING ROCK!

  • Quality my friend absolute Quality.

    Thank you.

  • I can't see your videos on my iPhone 4 but on my old NOKIA N82 i can, why?

    This thing sucks! :P

  • superb !

  • I love you! Thank you for covering my favorite Led Zep song. Now I have a chance to learn it, seeing everything you do. You're amazing! I hope I'm as good as you someday! Cheers!

  • Great... The only fault I could find was that you put that roll around the kit to early... Otherwise I thought it was damn near perfectoo!

  • one of the best covers of that one yet !

  • 1st you are awesome!! But are you using a Ludwig Speed King Bass kicker?

  • @skinnyb43

Yes, a Speed King from around 1969 with a Pearl quad beater. Thanks!

  • joepúta

  • wow!!!

    u are the best dude!!

    blessings

  • @radiophobicmedia

    thank you brother

  • 08:50 = Allllriiiiiight!

  • That's some great endurance you got there. I noticed my quick double bass hits in between beats gets kind of quiet sometime. Over time will the volume improve or is there something im missing?

  • @HeavyMetalUnicorn3

Thanks. When you practice your bass drum foot, I suggest to try and get all the hits equal in volume even if the pattern calls for accents....again only in practice mode. When you get around to playing what is written, the quieter double hits will be balanced. A good exercise I like to practice for the bass drum is the "purdie shuffle".

Disfrute

  • doesn't new emperors feel great,nothing better!!!

  • A question about the bass tuning: i use the same bass tuning method that you use. When i make a hard attack, the beater bounces a lot. How can i get a straight attack?

  • @hendrickvps

don't let the beater ever rest on the head...you have to let the springs pull it back. See my first lesson on foot technique for illustration.

  • @GrooveDrummin yeah i saw it... but sometimes I would like to have the deep sound of the tuning but without so much resonance, thats why i let the beater rest on the head and then is the bouncing trouble. I tried a reso head with a hole and that takes out a lot of the bouncing and resonance, what do you think?

  • @hendrickvps

I find a port takes away pretty much all the bounce and then you can let the beater rest on the head. In fact, when I first got my 26" I had the same problem but when I cut a port, problem gone. I even went so far as to try no reso head at all. You ever try that on your 26"?...holy crap, "rip your face off" loud! Recording wise, the sound is bigger non-ported and faster ported. But keep in mind...speed is not everything, it's how colorful and smooth you play with the overall sound.

  • @GrooveDrummin I agree with you. have you seen jojo mayers foot technique? I was practicing it but the bouncing kinda ruins it. Anyways, i better stay with the port head. Thanks!

  • WOWOWOWO this is by far my favorite song of zep, its hard to play, I wanted to see a real cover of this song, you did it im happy now :)

  • Best 10 mins I spent on Youtube in the last few weeks.

  • Way to "breathe" with the song. Cheers!
