Those absurd 2in1 devices from the 80's... A torch light with radio, an alarm clock with telephone headset... and yes, many times power supply was the only thing in common between both parts
It sounds as if the batteries are going flat. the instrument sound is not very good, but what do you expect from something that would have been a cheap throw away item back then, where was it made?
I can't see any reason why it wouldn't, but one thing you may need to be aware of is if the door actually holds the tape as is the case with most cassette players, you need to insert the adaptor as you would a normal tape and close the door, this could mean the the cable running from the adaptor to your iPod is jammed in between the door and the unit. This shouldn't be a problem, but you may damage the cable.
That's another option, but if you want to use this with an iPod without modifying the unit, your best bed is to use a cassette adaptor and leave the door open if you can.
The keyboard play just one horrible sound, and the tape player just badly play tapes, no interactions between the two, you can't record what you play, but I think the look is great !
this could form the basis of a great caseette-otron (cassette mellotron)

Have you tried turning the tape into a delay for the toy?

if you cut a hole in the door to run the cable that would work but thaty may ruin the retroness of it. id go thru the volume control and tap that.
