  • Great talk. I agree with the main thesis that we are supposed to become more god-like. I would suggest that we also need to become more ethically god-like. As God in the scripture becomes more focused on love of neighbour, the focus of religion should do the same. Unfortunately while we have progressed in the world of science, our ethics have not kept pace.

  • I think Brin overestimates the willingness of modern day Christians (and that's what we are talking about here) to get as worked up about anything as their ancestors did, and he overestimates their willingness to consider any point of view that challenges their belief.

In my experience, most Christians these days are incorrigibly fatalistic and wont get involved in anything because they think God will solve everything, and yes, that includes the so-called "religious right."

  • So basically become Mormon? See The Godmakers...

  • @Falconjh7 Why not Frank Herbert's Godmakers? Nowhere in this piece did I find a good bridge between Brin's theses and Decker/Hunt's so-called expose of the Mormon church, so what are you trying to say? He's obviously using 'godmakers' as a memetic device for poking fun and also validating a roomful of future-looking scientists and science geeks.

  • Wow, that was enlightening! I may have to change my user name.

  • "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a pre-frontal lobotomy."

    Love it! =D

  • @HueyTheDoctor87 Old joke. But I laughed too.

  • Description: Today he will address the question of how optimistic futurists can most effectively communicate with those who are creeped out by talk of transcendence and life extension
